Re: Torland Soccer: COTA Super League - 1971 Introduction

Burny SC

SUPER LEAGUE
Inaugural Member

Just west of the big lights of Bancana on Highway 16 in the Speer River valley is the blue collar city of Burny. In contrast to the big city dreams that Bancana effuses, the Germanic heritage rooted Burny is known for their packing plants as a central hub for the numerous ranches up the Speer Valley. More recently factories have dotted the town causing an influx of growth. The town has had some of the longest-running soccer clubs in the nation until the implosion of the SPL caused the original Burny squad to disband for a year. Burny native James Cathey bought the club rights and resurrected the stadium and bought some nice players to rebuild the team. He carried over the team's “Giant Slayers” moniker to a shortened “Giants” and decided the new incarnation should be known as established in 1971. Nobody is fooled though, as the loyal and devoted fans of Burny full well know the many times they've upset the big clubs in Bancana and Alko, which is how they earned their nickname. With a serviceable Burny Stadium, midfielder Luke Holiday leads a supremely talented group of defenders. The side lacks proficient scoring but keeper Dennis Sauer is solid and the squad fights hard from start to finish for exciting close matches.

The Identity

The crest is an odd-shaped oblong that pays homage to Burny's German heritage. Orange and navy have always been their primary colors even though the club has never had a single kit iconic enough to call classic. The chest stripe is the closet thing to kit tradition, also something of an oddity in soccer. James Cathey brought it back for the new home kit in orange with navy sleeves and an inset number on the chest stripe. Both kits pair navy shorts with thigh numbers. The clash kit brings the striping to the front and sleeves. It was reported that Cathey had struck a deal with Zeal Athletics to begin manufacturing their kits after the first season, making it the first such deal in the Super League.

Re: Torland Soccer: COTA Super League - 1971 Introduction

Continuing with the rest of the smaller Super League clubs in the state of Solinza, we head south to Barleserta.

Barleserta SC
SUPER LEAGUE
Inaugural Member

Solinza is a very large and oddly shaped state, covering quite a bit of territory in southwest Torland. At the mouth of the Ostrander River in the western foothills and plains of the Cekulee Mountains is the city of Barleserta, a place of unique culture and tradition. Known as the “Invincible City” from an Alamo-like stand made in the Spanish flavored center square against enraged natives during the settlement of the area, Barleserta prides itself on its deep heritage and history. As a sister city to towns in Spain, the city has taken on many Spanish traditions, including an annual bull run and bullfights. The ranches surrounding the area raise some of the finest bulls and cattle in the Pacific Rim. The soccer club is so-named the “Bulls” has been in continuous existence since 1940. A Spanish Mission-styled stadium called Ostrander Run is the iconic home field for Barleserta SC, both of which are now owned by Michael Roark, a controversial and shady businessman. Local fans are ardently loyal to the Bulls despite Roark's ownership and the side always enjoys sold out home matches. With a deep roster including defender Hunter Bradshaw and strikers Freddy Kessler and Saul Wolff, the Bulls have a fast, exciting style.

The Identity

Barleserta has an all-around unusual identity beginning with their purple-red color scheme. Their current crest is a roundel featuring a stylized B surrounded by bull horns that curve upward outside and around the crest. In perhaps a contradiction to their nickname and crest, their home kits have always featured a “cape”-- a diamond draped over the shoulder in reference to the local legendary bullfighters. The Bulls have used the Torland style of a traditional home and away kit pairing though at times they've gone with more stylized clash kits. The purple shirted home kit is paired with red shorts with an added number and purple socks, while the away kit goes with an all-white style.

Reto Bay SC

SUPER LEAGUE
Inaugural Member

Strategically located in the central region of Solinza where the Sigala River pours into Reto Bay, the similarly named city is a growing large city with a valuable treasure in being the home headquarters for the High Command as well as the International Intelligence Group, Torland's counterparts to the CIA and MI6. A natural harbor deeply set in a long bay, Reto has long been the preferred place of safety for leaders of all walks over the years, originating with rogue pirates who used the town as a base of operations. The town has carried a secretive swagger ever since, growing into a crossroads with a bustling port. The old park on Swashbuckle Street has been in existence since the early 1900's and seen several clubs come and go. Every team has always just been referred to as the “Bucks” for the home park and their longstanding rivalry with Barleserta. Most recently a new club was established by former Torland intelligence officer Captain Erik North who also organized soccer clubs for the government. Captain North helped refurbish Swashbuckle Street into a viable center for top flight soccer and found enough high profile players to buy to win a seat in the Super League. Defenders Ben Graham and Harry Hutcherson hold things down while a deep midfielder group led by Gus Rafferty sets things up for an electric scorer in veteran Teddy Marlowe.

The Identity

The Bucks have always played with pirate-themed imagery in their various incarnations, and this time Capt. North went with a modernized crest of crossed cutlasses on a black shield with an inset ball. After a wide array of colors over the years, North chose just two, black and blue to represent the new squad. He kept the home kit clean and simple with a black v-neck and blue shorts, while the clash kit went with an all-white style that featured a pair of chevrons across the chest and bottom of the shorts in one of the more modern looks in the league.

Next up: We head to a nexus of great clubs in the sprawling city of Alko.

Thanks for all the feedback!

Re: Torland Soccer: COTA Super League - 1971 Introduction

Now we head to the state of Pakola and the sprawling city of Alko. I will present a more detailed city description as well as a map of the area after the teams are presented. Alko is the largest city in Torland with similarities to London, New York or Hong Kong. There are four top-flight teams in Alko and we first head to the top of the class in both the SPL and in Torland:

Sandy Pale SC
SUPER LEAGUE
Inaugural Member

As the oldest of the quartet of top clubs in the sprawling city of Alko, Sandy Pale leads the way in top-level play, winning many trophies over the years. Located in the northern quadrant of Alko, which is formed by the confluence of the Sandy Pale River meeting the Misty River, in the Cleslan's Landing district, is the quaint old pitch that has been home to Sandy Pale its whole existence. The park was cheekily named Withrow Lane after owner and founder Lane Withrow Sr who was a fan of soccer fields in England with similar names. Now owned by his son Lane Withrow Jr, the tradition of excellence has been continued in keeping Sandy Pale as always a top-flight contender. The club has had several nicknames over the years but “River Runners” has always migrated to the top, named after the men with light, fast boats which ran contraband up and down the rivers to escape the slower police barges during several eras of prohibitions in Alko. Known for knowledgable, quality, loyal fans, Sandy Pale has a long influence on the people and culture in Alko and the country as probably the most universally known club along with Armada in all of Torland. Coached by Calvin Williamson, the Runners have a bundle of excellent players including strikers Nigel Montero and Zach Pepper, defender Val Hamel, keeper Kris Chavis, and midfielder Houston Keefer.

The Identity

A stylized “SP” insignia is at the forefront of Sandy Pale's rarely changed classic crest which features a light blue shield with a heraldic pale of the color sand down the middle and the insignia in claret. All three colors have never changed for Sandy Pale, as light blue, claret and sand are iconic along with the all-light blue home kit with a similar pattern as their crest on the home shirt. A new clash kit of claret with a striped sash down the left breast with the crest inset makes an appearance for the Super League. Their socks are interchangeable but typically are contrasted.

Up next: We head to the two clubs on the west side of Alko

C&C appreciated!

Re: Torland Soccer: COTA Super League - 1971 Introduction

We now pay a visit to the northwest quadrant of Alko and the second of their four top-flight clubs:

Alko United SC
SUPER LEAGUE
Inaugural Member

In the northwest quadrant of Alko are the rich suburbs and neighborhoods including Staver, where Staver Park has been the home of Alko United since 1946. It's a quaint old park on the outside with constant renovations inside to keep up with modern trends and fads, mostly driven by the posh, well-to-do fans who call the Argyles their home side. All three other Alko teams share a unified dislike for Alko United while the Argyles themselves tend to look on all the others with disdain. Owner Vaughn “Milly” Milliken carries the posh aura with him and fancies himself a true philanthropist in the area. Not much for soccer knowledge, he does, however, have truckloads of cash which he likes to also parade about as the face for the club. Despite the nearly infinite money chest, United's on-field success as been mostly mixed even with a continuous roster of top players. Coaches rarely last long under Milly and the club has underwhelmed as a result. Damon McDonald has the current task of coaching the Argyles, while the roster has waned a bit of late with Milly's preoccupation with his current social endeavors. There are still a handful of standout players aboard though, with veteran striker Andy McKay, defender Rich Reese, and midfielder/striker Heath Block leading the charge.

The Identity

Alko United has always worn forest green and red and featured various applications of the argyle pattern in their identity. More recently, a rounded diamond crest of argyle with a large A centered inside has taken hold as their primary calling card. The club has always worn forest green for the home kit, this instance going all-around with red accents on a fully collared polo shirt. The clash kit takes an all-red approach with a pair of vertical stripes on the front and green accents and white numerals.
