1977 Kellogg Cup Playoffs: Playdowns - North
Baudette Walleye vs Fargo Titans
Lake of the Woods Arena was filled to capacity as the Walleye played their first playoff game in 7 years. Things started off well for the Fish, leading 2-0 after one. Things took a turn in favor of the Titans in the second with Fargo completely controlling play, getting a whopping 21 shots on goal in the period as they tie it at 2. The third was again controlled by the Titans, although it was not nearly as one sided. The horn sounded and overtime was needed to decide a winner. A few minutes passed before Fargo got a 3 on 1 chance that ended with a cross crease pass the was tapped past the Walleye goalie and into the back of the net, sending Fargo onward with a 3-2 overtime win.
Detroit Lakes Wood Ducks vs Little Falls Pilots
It was a back and forth game in Detroit Lakes as the Pilots put up a hell of a fight to keep their season going. The Wood Ducks by no means had a bad game, they just seemed to lack that extra something that you need in order to succeed in the playoffs. Little Falls has that something, using their playoff experience to their advantage to ultimately walk away with a 5-3 victory on the road to end the Woodies season.
Grand Forks Jets vs Chisholm Flames
Chisholm's long awaited return to the playoffs was cut short by a very good Grand Forks team who unloaded 4 goals in the opening period. It was looking like the Jets were gonna run away with this one, but the Flames regrouped between periods and actually outscored the Jets 3-1 through the next two periods. Unfortunately for the Flames, the 4 goals against in the first would be too much to overcome as their season comes to an end. Grand Rapids advances, defeating Chisholm 5-3.
Duluth Hornets vs Alexandria Norsemen
Two teams making their return to post season hockey after years of disappointment, two very different scores. The Hornets came out flying in front of over 2,500 fans at the DECC and they did not disappoint. Alexandria just couldn't keep up with the Duluth offensive attack, allowing the Hornets to control play and find the back of the net over and over again. When it was all said and done the Norsemen had 1 to the Hornets 6 as Duluth advances with a statement win.

Winona doesn't totally suck? What is the new world we live in?

Happy to see the Jets get the win. I'm hoping for a Cinderella run from them!

Dan O'Mac's first round predictions:
North:
With the Titans, Pilots, Jets and Hornets already having eliminated the Walleye, Wood Ducks, Flames and Norsemen, let's get into it.
First off, let's pick our Upset of the round. I see a couple options, but I'm going to go with the St. Cloud Bearcats over the East Grand Forks Pointers.
Look for the Brainerd Lumberjacks and Duluth Voyageurs, a pair of teams with postseason pedigree, to play a very close one in the game of the round.
I expect the Silver Bay-Mountain Iron to be a good game as well, look for the Beavers to nab a win there.
And finally, the Eveleth Redbirds-Duluth Hornets game is another of those "classic teams meeting in the playoffs" games. I personally don't like the Hornets, so I'm pulling for Eveleth in this one.
Twin Cities:
The Vulcans are back on top, as is come to be expected. They'll handle the Chargers in their first round matchup by at least 3 goals.
Richfield is going to face a challenge from Osseo, but I don't think the Screaming Eagles will come out with the "W".
No Cinderella run this year for the Foxes, they'll be knocked out by the Millers.
My upset pick is Anoka over West St. Paul. It's good to see the Waves back in the postseason, but I'm liking the Warriors in this one.
South:
I'm getting my upset pick in right away on this one, as I'm going to go with the Sioux City Shockers to upset the Northfield Outlaws.
The matchup to watch is going to be Apple Valley and Brookings. The Cardinals and the Buffaloes are going to have a close one, and will be playing some extra time.
It's always fun to see the Brewers and Governors in the playoffs together. They won't be able to meet until the Super Series, but I can see them both making it.
Austin and Owatonna will have a gorgeous matchup from the uniform side of things.

1977 Kellogg Cup Playoffs; First Round - North
Coleraine Trout vs Fargo Titans
The Trout were able to get out to an early lead, scoring less than 5 minutes into the game. They were able to shift to an ultra defensive style of play that slowed the pace of the game to a crawl. It wasn't the most entertaining game by any means, but the Brookies were able to completely shut down Fargo, keeping them to only 14 shots on goal in the game. The Trout buried an empty netter in the final minute of the game, sending the Trout to the second round with a 2-0 shutout win in front of nearly the entire town of Coleraine.
Thunder Bay Giants vs Fort Frances Trappers
It was a Battle of Ontario in Thunder Bay as the Giants welcomed the Fort Frances Trappers for the first time in these stories teams histories. The Trappers had high hopes of going into the Garden an walking away with a victory, unfortunately for them that was not how the game played out. What transpired was a one sided affair with the Giants dominating play, shutting out Fort Frances 4-0 to advance.
Steinbach Barbarians vs Little Falls Pilots
After a scoreless first, things opened up in Steinbach during the second with Little Falls burying a rebound to break the deadlock. The Barbs answered back a few minutes later on a snipe from the slot, but the Pilots regained their lead late in the period on a breakaway tucked five hole. Steinbach controlled the third, but was unable to beat the Pilots goalie, failing to comeback as Little Falls advances with the 2-1 upset victory.
Silver Bay Beavers vs Mountain Iron Cougars
This was a close game through two with the Beavers holding a slight lead of 3-2. Things took a turn on the Cougars in the third though as Silver Bay seemed to have a horseshoe up their arse as they scored two seemingly impossible fluke goals in the third, giving them a 3 goal lead that was just too much to overcome. Silver Bay advances with a 5-3 win over Mountain Iron to reach the second round for the first time in franchise history.
Warroad Lakers vs Grand Forks Jets
It was a battle through and through in the Castle on the Corner as the Lakers and Jets went back and forth on the ice and the scoreboard. In the end it was Warroad who got the last laugh, taking a 3-2 lead midway through the third that would prove to be the final goal of the game, sending the Lakers to the second round.
Brainerd Lumberjacks vs Duluth Voyageurs
The game of the first round was without a doubt the Jacks-Le Bleus. It was a high flying matchup with both teams going back and forth for 60 minutes only for the score to be tied at 3. Brainerd Civic Arena was packed with over 2,000 fans chanting "Lets Go Jacks" as the first playoff game in the new barn headed to overtime. Much like regulation, both teams were flying in ot, going back and forth with chances, but both goalies stood strong. It wasn't until over 14 minutes into the overtime period that a Brainerd shot was stopped by the Voyageur goalie, but the rebound was loose in the slot. A Jack was quick to the puck, picking it up and putting it to his backhand where he lifted it up and over the downed goalie and under the bar. The arena erupted and Lumberjacks flooded the ice to celebrate as they defeat the Voyageurs 4-3 in overtime.
Eveleth Redbirds vs Duluth Hornets
Two of the most storied teams in MAHL history facing off for the first time in 24 years. The Hipp was as electric as always with deafening "Go Reds Go" chants before the puck was even dropped. It became clear early on that this was Eveleth's game to lose, completely outplaying the Hornets in the first, leading 1-0 and outshooting them 19-7. The Birds went on to score once more in both the second and third all whilst preventing Duluth from getting any sort of rhythm going. The Redbirds advance, knocking off the Hornets 3-0.
East Grand Forks Pointers vs St. Cloud Bearcats
It was looking like we had an upset on our hands in EGF with the Bearcats leading 3-1 after 2. All St. Cloud had to do was keep doing what they had been doing and not make any mistakes. They could not do that. It started with a Bearcat getting a 5 minute major for high sticking, breaking a Pointers nose with his stick blade. The Pointers rallied behind their injured teammate, using the major penalty as much as they possibly could, making St. Cloud pay by scoring 3 goals in the 5 minute span to take a 4-3 lead. EGF kept going from there, outplaying the Cats for the rest of the period and converting again with 7 minutes left to give themselves a two goal cushion that held, sending the Pointers to the second round with a 5-3 comeback win over St. Cloud.

Sorry Duluth, it had to be done. Way to go Reds! Also, has it really been 26 years since the last time we played them? I mean that sounds right but man has time flown.

What a great game between the Jacks and Bleus. I can't even be mad.

1977 Kellogg Cup Playoffs; First Round - Twin Cities
St. Anthony Vulcans vs Golden Valley Chargers
Upset Alert! The top ranked St. Anthony Vulcans have fallen to the Golden Valley Chargers in the first round. Nobody expected the Chargers to even compete, let alone beat, the Vulcans on the road. Yet here they were, playing good fundamental hockey and converting on whatever chances they could get. The Vulcans were the overall better team in this one, no disputing it, they just couldn't seem to keep Golden Valley from getting these odd man rushes that led to 4 Charger goals. The final horn sounded and Augsburg Arena was in a stunned silence as Golden Valley finished on top 4-3 to knock off the number 1 seed in the MAHL.
Plymouth Militia vs Minnetonka Muskies
Despite touching one another, Plymouth and Tonka have never played a game against one another, that all changed right now. Despite the lack of history between these two, the pride in representing their cities became clear early, bragging rights were on the line. Two teams normally known for their speed and skill were throwing their bodies at one another as if it were an Iron Range game. The high physical aspect of the game didn't seem to effect scoring as the Militia and Muskies combined for a total 10 goals in the game. In the end it was the North Metro champs who were victorious by a score of 6-4.
White Bear Lake Braves vs Mounds View Gunners
It was an East Metro matchup in White Bear as the EMHL champs welcomed the Gunners to their first ever playoff game. Things turned out to be much closer than their regular season meetings where the Braves winning their only 2 meetings. The Gunners managed to pop home a rebound in the second to break the deadlock, extending their lead to 2 in the third. White Bear Lake was snake bit on offense, seemingly unable to find the back of the net despite their best efforts. The final horn sounded with Mounds View up 2-0 to advance with the upset win.
Edina Cake Eaters vs Bloomington Bears
Two West Metro powers facing off to see who will advance. As they say, history often repeats itself and that is what happened here. The Cake Eaters have had the Bears number for years now, leading the all time series by a staggering margin. Bloomington did fins the back of the net first, but 3 unanswered goals in the first for Edina would put them in front and they wouldn't look back. When it was all said and done it was another Edina win over Bloomington with the Cake Eaters winning 5-2.
Minneapolis Millers vs Fridley Foxes
In a rematch of last years first round matchup that set Fridley on a run to the Kellogg Cup Final, the Millers were the ones coming out on top this time. Minneapolis was firing on all cylinders, firing shots from all over, getting an incredible 51 shots on goal in the game. Dahlquist did all he could in net for the Foxes, stopping 45 shots, but it would not be enough as the Mighty Millers advance with a 6-2 blowout win.
Maplewood Retrievers vs St. Paul Victorias
Maplewood vs the boys from the East Side for the first time. The disdain for one another became clear early with a scrum of all players on the ice wrestling and sucker punching one another. Maplewood got on the board at the end of the first to electrify Aldrich Arena. The Retrievers began to take control in the second, cheered on with "Go Dogs Go" and "Lets Go Goldies" chants. The V's were given a powerplay midway through the second and as they set up in the offensive zone a pass was picked off by a Retriever who went in all alone on a breakaway. He faked a shot to get the goalie to drop, then pulled it to his forehand and tucked it around the goaltender to give his team a 2 goal lead. St. Paul would remain scoreless, falling to Maplewood by a score of 2-0.
Richfield Roosters vs Osseo Screaming Eagles
It was a Battle of Birds in Richfield that turned into a classic. Both sides came ready to play, going back and forth with opportunities and ending regulation tied at 3. Overtime saw the pace slow down a bit with both sides playing more cautious, but there were still scoring chances for both teams. It was beginning to look like a second overtime would be needed as we reached the final minute of the period. Richfield broke out of their zone and worked the puck along the boards in the Osseo zone. A winger dropped it for his teammate and curled into the slot where he got a quick pass back. Wasting no time, the Rooster put the puck on goal. The Eagle goalie got a piece of it with his shoulder, but it was not enough to stop it from hitting the twine. Richfield Ice Arena exploded with celebration, the Roosters advance with a 4-3 win in overtime.
West St. Paul Waves vs Anoka Warriors
West St. Paul was in the drivers seat after two, sitting pretty up 2-0 with 20 minutes left to play. Anoka had been kept off the board to this point and they really hadn't done much of note thus far. The third period though, was where the Warriors came to life. Anoka became a goal scoring machine, finding the back of the net 4 times in the period as they held the Waves to 2 shots on goal in the period, advancing with a comeback to remember, winning 4-2 over West St. Paul.
