Well usually I find a picture online of what I want the logo to be, sometimes many. I find a couple reference images of other similar logos from the time. And using a variety of different tools and brush sizes, I make an outline of what the logo will be, then instead of complex shading and such, I use a smaller brushes to draw lines, creating a much more drastic, and time appropriate "shade". There a few techniques, but I'd say the most important step is just making sure you find good reference images, I'd aim for real life pictures of the animal, or person, and finding a good couple "anchors" or old fashioned logos from the same time period. Sportslogos has the ability to sort logos by year, and that makes it really easy to try and imagine if your logo would fit in. Hope this helps, dm me if you need some more help!

After a long offseason (*cough* it seemed to go on a couple weeks longer than expected *cough*) the 1956 season was finally here! And we got quite the week 1 matchup. In the NFA West season opener, the Bombers went down to Chicago, where budding rivals and expansion sibs fought hard. QB Henderson coming back from a season ending injury after he started off so hot, and reigning champion Zephyrs, led by reigning MVP Scott Hogg gave quite the story line in what was one of the biggest games of the season for both teams. After a long hard fight Detroit managed to slip out of Chi-town with the win. Stunning the champs on their home turf. The game was crazy. Detroit aired the ball for a record breaking 6 passing touchdowns, but so did Chicago and Hogg. What was the key in the Bombers victory was a clutch run by RB James Barnes late into the game. With less than a minute left, and both teams seemingly okay with tie. Barnes broke through and carried the ball down to the 23 before being stopped. A crowd silencing 47 yard run that gave Detroit the game winning field goal. Detroit rode this momentum and were the team of the year. Only tallying 1 loss to New York in week 8. Followed closely behind them were the aforementioned Zephyrs, led by MVP Scott Hogg. Chicago while not finishing first in the west, seemed much better than the Bombers. They destroyed just about anyone they played. Their only other loss came to Philadelphia, which was just a one score game in the Hornets Nest. Rounding out the NFA West we had the Blue Ox, who collected 4 wins in their inaugural season, and the Ironmen and Tigers who were both cursed by injuries. Most importantly for St. Louis was a serious injury for longtime Tiger, Oliver Black. A player who has been a top RB in the league for years has now spent both of the past two seasons held back by injuries. Black was key in the Tigers offense as without him the aging Pearson and O-line couldn’t carry the offense like they could years before.
In the NFA East, the Hornets pulled out on top for what seemed like the thousandth time. Led by star QB; Eugene Addams. Addams had another solid year, producing just as well as people would’ve hoped when he came out of college. Philadelphia didn’t look nearly as good as Detroit or Chicago. But they got wins where they needed them. The biggest one being a big home stand where the Hornets defense, surrounded by the fans of the biggest fan base in the country, held the Zephyrs offense to just 120 total yards of offense and 4 first downs through 3. The defense fell off in the fourth quarter however allowing Chicago to sneak back into it. However, it was good enough through 3 to pull off the win. This showed off the true potential of this team, having a 17-0 lead at half time against the best team in the country and the reigning champs. And they rode this momentum till the end of the season. Not losing another game. Their fans are hoping to keep it up in the postseason. After Philadelphia we’re the mediocre Cannons. They were above .500 again but they lost all their big games. Next were the Pirates, finishing surprisingly with a winning record after starting 0-3. They tied a close one against Philadelphia in week 4 at home. And then went 6-2 to finish out the year, watching all their youngins improve. To round out the NFA East we had the expansion Rangers who played well, considering it’s their first year, and the Gaels who traded away assets about half way through the year after things started going wrong. Expect a front office shake up after the seasons over.
The Most Valuable Player award went to Scott Hogg of the Chicago Zephyrs.
The Most Outstanding Rookie award went to Art Walters of the Washington Pirates.
The Most Outstanding Coach award went to Randolph Brunswick of the Chicago Zephyrs.
C&C appreciated! The championship games will be up either tomorrow or Saturday!

So for the first conference championships, we had New York at Philadelphia and Chicago at Detroit!
The first ever NFA East Championship was held in famous Hornets Nest in Philadelphia and was a matchup of the New York Cannons and the red hot Philadelphia Hornets looking to make their way back into their 4th straight Champions Bowl. The game started off quick. A botched snap on 2nd and 9 for the Cannons immediately gave the Hornets the ball in the red zone. They quickly converted and gave Addams his first TD of the afternoon. The Cannons retaliated with 2 first downs but had to punt after getting sacked on two consecutive downs. With the Nest rocking Philadelphia easily gets down to the red zone again. A mixed attack of Addams and 4th year RB Mark Jackson takes the Hornets all 70 yards and sets them up at the 10 as the 1st quarter ticks to a close. The second half started just like the first did. With Addams collecting another TD. Both teams then exchanged drives that ended with punts. Philadelphia went down after this and punched 3 onto the board after the Cannons defense stuffed Jackson on a 3rd and 4. This gave Cannons QB; Kenny Durham, who they traded for at the beginning of the season, about a minute to get down the field. He got down to the 40 and with 20 seconds left threw a pick right to CB John Walker, who almost returned it for a touchdown. There were still 5 seconds on the clock however and the Hornets managed to knock another 3 onto the board as time expired.Down 20-0 coming out of the half, the Cannons defense stepped up and forced a 3 and out. It was the first 3 and out the Hornets had suffered in the past 3 weeks. Durham then led the Cannons down the field and handed the ball to RB Travis Tidwell for the score. With about half the 3rd quarter left however. Addams punched back with his own long drive. Converting a third and fourth down and then also scrambling for 16 yards on a 2nd and 15. Then letting his RB score the 7 to put Philly up 27-7. To kickoff the last quarter of the game, Durham found WR Darius Brown for a 34 yard completion that put the Cannons directly in Hornets territory. Cannons needed a score here to stay in it. 2 plays and a first down later, Durham, trying to evade a sack, over throws his man, and lands the ball right into the hands of Walker, again. Philadelphia bled the clock and put up another 7 on the board to seal this one away and guarantee their way back into another Champions Bowl. They won the first ever NFA East Championship 34-7.The NFA West Championship was much expected to be much closer than the game that was on before it. Chicago looking to get back at Detroit for the week 1 loss than gave the Bombers the home field advantage in this game. And Detroit looking to knock off the reigning champs to make their way into their first Championship Bowl.Henderson and the Bombers got the ball to start the game and immediately got to work. Henderson found his WR James Nelson for 2 straight 6 yard completions and found Barnes for another first down. Barnes then got stuffed on 2 run attempts and Henderson tossed an incompletion on 3rd and 11. This set Chicago up in their 10 after the punt. Hogg found a receiver for what would’ve been a 1st down immediately. But the receiver dropped the ball as he was hit. The Bombers picked it up and carried it into the end zone. The ruling was that the receiver had never caught it and the play was ruled as an incompletion. Hogg handed it off to his RB for 3 straight plays before trying another pass attempt. This time however, he was hit from behind and sacked for a loss of 6 yards. He reluctantly handed it off again to watch FB Brad Cohn break through for 21 yards. Putting them at midfield. Hogg continued to hand it off. All Detroit could do was watch as nothing would stop Cohn. He took Chicago all the way down the field on only 5 rushes. Carrying 2 defenders with him on that last run. Putting Chicago at the 2. Cohn then took a direct snap and punched it for 6. Zephyrs missed the extra point however leaving them at 6. Detroit got back to work and managed a first down before the start of the 2nd quarter. Henderson found Coleman out of gate for a 15 yard reception. Coleman managed to break loose of his defender however and took it all the way down for the score. Detroit’s kicker was right on and gave the Bombers the 7-6 lead. Chicago retaliated with a long grueling drive that wore down Detroit’s defense. Consisting mostly of Cohn finding ways to get 5-6 yards every time he touched the ball, Hogg also got his first completion of the night. Marking it the longest it’s taken him to get a completion in a game ever. After almost 8 minutes of pounding, Hogg found a receiver in the end zone for his first TD of the night. Chicago made the extra point this time too. So they gave the ball back to Detroit with a 13-7 lead and 4 minutes of the clock left. Henderson got his team down to the 40 with just over a minute left. Plenty of time to get a score. However, after an incompletion that set Detroit up with a 2nd and 10, Henderson handed it off to Barnes. Barnes dodge 1 tackler but was absolutely hammered by another one. DT James Carpenter punched the ball out of Barnes arms and landed on it immediately. This was only his 3rd fumble this year. Chicago looking to take advantage of where they got the ball. Instantly got to work making their way to the end zone. Hogg finding WR Harold Schmitt for the QB’s second TD of the night. Entering halftime Chicago had eclipsed a 20-7 lead. Zephyrs also received the ball at the start of the second half, giving them a chance to make this a 3 score game. They would do just that. With about a five minute drive. Cohn got his second TD of the game, in a game that has set several career records for him. Detroit wouldn’t back down however. They got the ball at the 21 to start their drive. Henderson made quick work of a Zephyrs blitz on a 2nd down and escaped the pocket to find WR Coleman wide open in the middle of the field. It would take 2 defenders and 23 yards before they got him down. Now with the ball at midfield, Henderson took a shot down field. It bobbled threw the hands of both WR Nelson and his defender before ending up on the ground, incomplete. Henderson took another shot which would fall incomplete, before handing it off to Barnes who got them the first down and more, setting them up at the 35 with about 5 and a half minutes on the clock. Henderson would hand it off to Barnes who got another first down. Then after watching Barnes get tackled for a loss on first, Henderson found a man in the end zone to give Detroit 7 more. Now it was time for their defense to step up. After two consecutive incompletions, Chicago looked to Hogg to get the first down. A 3 and 10 in their own 20 wasn’t what they’d hoped to do this drive. But as Hogg’s pocket collapses, he launches one down field. There was a receiver down there, but Hogg had threw it too far to his left and straight into the arms of the defender. Who, fell and was down by contact at the Bombers 35. Now with about 3 minutes left in the 3rd quarter, Chicago had given Detroit the chance to make this a 1 score game. Detroit got down to the 23 before the quarter ended. The scoreboard showed Chicago with a 27-14 lead. Detroit only has 1 more quarter to win if they want to keep their season alive. Chicago just has to hold for the rest of the game and they’ll get the chance to play in their second straight Champions Bowl. After finding themselves on a 3rd and 6 Henderson tries to find his experiences receiver Coleman. He however throws the ball behind him just a tad and it’s almost picked. Now on 4th and 6, Detroit is forced to go for it. Deciding to hand it off after 3 straight incompletions. Barnes pulls through on the biggest play of the game, just like when these teams met up in week 1. Barnes found his way to the end zone to put Detroit within 6. Now, Chicago just had to score and the game might be theirs. Hogg takes them down the field. But they’re stopped at midfield after being sacked on a 3rd and 2. The Detroit defense had completely shut down Cohn in the second half. Even on the drive where he scored, Cohn has only rushed for 20 yards this half, after rushing for 150 in the first half. Detroit now had half a quarter to get from their own 10 to the end zone to get to the Champions Bowl. With precise accuracy, Henderson finds his receivers time and time again, building a resume for maybe one of his best drives this season. The Bombers after 3 minutes are set up on the Bombers 25. On the following first down, Henderson scrambles for 10. Sliding into a first down on what seemed like a designed QB run. He continues to find his men and got the Bombers down into the red zone. He then finds Coleman again, who’s had his best game since his days in Pittsburgh, for the lead. Their defense stops Chicago from making any last second score and Detroit celebrates making it to the Champions Bowl, upsetting the Z-men 28-27.
So we got a good matchup between the Hornets and Bombers for the Champions Bowl!
C&C Appreciated!
