1960 Kellogg Cup Playoffs, Second Round Day 1
Hibbing Greyhounds vs Bemidji Blue Ox
Our first game of the day saw our only overtime of the day as the Blue Ox were so close to pulling off the upset, but ended just short. Bemidji was down 2-1 after 1, but had tied it 2-2 in the third. The Ox then took a 3-2 lead late in the third off of a rocket from Motzko on the point. The Hounds were stunned and the hometown crowd was silent. They pulled the goalie with just over a minute left and it miraculously payed off as Polich forced overtime with a snipe just inside the pipe. Polich would repeat his heroics in the overtime period as he drew a powerplay and proceeded to score the game winner on the powerplay, he's a 2 time MVP for a reason.
Roseau Stars vs Brainerd Lumberjacks
The Brainerd Boys continue to prove to the rest of the league that they are a real threat at the cup this season. The Jacks lit up the Stars goalie early, scoring 3 in the first 5 minutes. Roseau called a timeout and had a skater put on the goalies equipment to replace the struggling goalie (at this time each team only had one goalie on the roster). The backup miraculously didn't allow a goal against despite only having played in 3 games when the regular goalie was sick. The Stars got one goal in the third, but it was too little too late as the Jacks advance to the great eight.
St. Paul Victorias vs Chisholm Flames
I don't know if it was the wear and tear after the overtime victory against the Moose, or the intimidating atmosphere of the St. Paul Auditorium, but the Flames lacked the spark that got them here. The V's completely dominated all game long, coasting to a convincing 4-0 shutout victory.
Virginia Royals vs Thief River Falls Railers
One of the most highly anticipated games of the second round lived up to the hype as the Royals and Railers battled back and forth in a very even match. Both teams got scoring chances, but the goalies kept this one close for most of the game. The Railers jumped out front first about midway through the second, but the Royals answered back before the end of the period. The third was a physical affair where tempers began to flare. A scrum broke out after a Royal poked the glove of the Railers goalie who was covering the puck. After it was broken up, the Railers were given a powerplay where Zach Smith found his brother Jack in the slot who tipped it through the legs of the goalie. That goal would turn out to be the game winner as Thief River Falls upsets Virginia.

Huh, never realized Hibbing used a white logo on their blue/gray uniforms. Seems odd but I guess it got by me this whole time so who am I to say. Also, I really like the Blue Ox shoulder outline/stripes. The template really shows them off!

Yeah the white logo on Hibbing's home jersey is one of those little things that was originally only supposed to last a couple of years before it would be changed to silver to match the rest of the jersey. But the Hounds have been doing so well lately that I don't think they would have wanted to change anything, plus these jerseys have become synonymous with Michael Polich and his dominant years in that uniform.6.2.6

Kellogg Cup Playoffs, Second Round Day 2
International Falls Ice vs Twin Cities Vulcans
By far the biggest upset of the 1960 playoffs thus far saw the Vulcans go into Smokey Bear Park and steal a win against the second ranked Ice. International Falls took the early lead and were up 1-0 after 1. The Vulcans turned the momentum in their favor in the second though, rattling off 3 unanswered goals. The Ice were able to get one back in the third, but the Vulcans played really solid defensively to hold off the Ice's attack and hold on to the win.
Duluth Voyageurs vs Thunder Bay Giants
This Lake Superior League rivalry was on full display in this fast paced, physical match up. Duluth struck first on a nice snap shot from Heaslip, who scored again in his next shift to give Le Bleus a 2-0 lead. Thunder Bay was finally able to get one past the Voyageurs goalie in the third to give their team some energy and hope that they had been lacking since the second goal from Heaslip. The Giants gave it their all for the last 7 minutes, but Duluth held strong. The Voyageurs capitalized on an empty net goal to solidify the 3-1 victory.
Minneapolis Millers vs Mankato Moose
The Millers explosive offense was firing on all cylinders against the Moose. The Mighty Millers put up 4 in the first two periods without allowing any goals against. Mankato made a little bit of a comeback in the third, scoring twice, but by then it was too late. Minneapolis buried one more to put the final nail in the Moose's coffin.
Cloquet Broncos vs St. Cloud Bearcats
This one was actually closer than most had anticipated, with the Bearcats actually playing the Broncos very competitively most of the game. Millen just proved to be too much for St. Cloud to handle as he put up 2 goals and 2 assists to lead his club to the great eight.

With the Ice going down, my only team left is Thief River Falls... so gotta pull for the Railers.
Predictions:
Brainerd in an upset
Thief River Falls keeps their run going
Duluth won't let Twin Cities surprise them like they did to the Ice
Cloquet will cool off the Minneapolis offence

1960 Kellogg Cup Playoffs, Great Eight
Hibbing Greyhounds vs Brainerd Lumberjacks
The Brainerd Boys seem to have finally met their match in the top seeded Greyhounds. The Jacks scored first, just over a minute into the game, stunning the nearly 4,000 fans in the Hibbing Memorial Building. Luckily for them though, the Hounds answered back just a few minutes later, and Polich found the back of the net once again in the final seconds of the first. The second and third periods were close and hard fought, but neither team was able to find the back of the net, giving the Greyhounds a 2-1 win.
St. Paul Victorias vs Thief River Falls Railers
The atmosphere was electric in this great eight rematch between the V's and Railers, the crowd was at capacity with over 7,500 fans in attendance. Things were different than last year though, the Railers were comfortable in the spotlight and looked much more poised than a year ago. The first period was scoreless with neither team having any great chances. Thief River broke the deadlock thanks to a rocket from the point that found its way through the mob of bodies in front of the net, the second period would finish 1-0. The Victorias came out in the third hungry and aggressive. This left the defense a little more open however, and the Railers were able to take advantage. A Victoria had his pass intercepted by Jack Smith who found his twin Zach wide open in the neutral zone. Zach went in on goal all alone and roofed it just inside the crossbar to give his team a 2-0 lead. After celebrating on the ice with his teammates, they all skated to the bench pumping their right arms in what has become synonymous with the team after last years upset over Roseau. Thief River would hold off the Victorias offensive attacks for the remainder of the game, upsetting the Victorias in a 2-0 shut out.
Duluth Voyageurs vs Twin Cities Vulcans
The Cinderella run of the Vulcans came to a harsh stop at the hands of Le Bleus. The Voyageurs seemed to have learned from the errors of the Ice, coming in with the mindset as if they were playing the Ice themselves. Duluth controlled the flow of the game for most of the game, only allowing 14 shots against in the 3-0 shut out victory to advance to their second semi finals in a row.
Minneapolis Millers vs Cloquet Broncos
The last game of the day saw the Broncos upset the Mighty Millers in a high scoring 4-3 game. Both teams offenses were firing on all cylinders with both teams having over 30 shots on goal in the game. The Broncos just were lucky enough to come out on top as both teams exchanged goals and scoring chances all game long. Millen again stole the show, scoring once and assisting on two of his teams goals. He's leading his team to their first semi finals appearance since 1927.
This was definitely a shocking day for the Twin Cities Hockey League who went 0-3 on the day, including two major upsets against.

TRF vs. Cloquet, please!

Fun storyline in Cloquet but the Voyageurs are focused and ready. I predict a low scoring game with Le Bleus advancing. Well, I hope so at least!
The Railers have built a reputation and the Greyhounds should be alert. I have unreasonable hate for Hibbing so I hope the Railers upset them but I think they'll come up just short and we'll see Hibbing in the Kellogg against Duluth.

Agreed! Sick of Hibbing winning it, and TRF has never one it and Cloquet won one 30 some years ago. Go for the new winners!
