Re: Minnesota Amateur Hockey League

1959 Kellogg Cup Final

International Falls Ice 3 2OT
Duluth Voyageurs 2

1st Period
IF - 0
DUL - 0

The atmosphere was unbelievable in Smokey Bear Park on the shores of the Rainy River, as seemingly all 6,000+ residents were in attendance, waving their scarves and chanting "Go Ice Go". Despite the electricity in the air, neither team was able to get on the board.

2nd Period
IF - 1
DUL - 2

The hometown boys struck first, just under 5 minutes into the period. Le Bleus responded with a goal of their own less than a minute later to tie things back at one apiece. Things began to get chippy midway through the period after a Voyageur chopped International Falls captain Willy Mason in the back of the knee, causing a line brawl that lasted nearly 5 minutes before the refs finally got things back under control. With the Ice's first line in the penalty box, Le Bleus were able to get a couple minutes of sustained offensive pressure which ended with a go ahead goal with just over a minute left in the period, silencing the hometown crowd.

3rd Period
IF - 2
DUL - 2

The third period started off much slower than the others, the Ice almost looked dejected and the crowd was lacking the muster they were known for. It wasn't until the Voyageurs were called for tripping with 6:32 left in the game that the crowd had anything worth cheering for. The Ice set up their powerplay, passing the puck around the zone looking for an open shooting lane. After over a minute of moving the puck without a shot the fans became restless and began yelling to shoot. Finally a puck was shot towards the net, but the shot came from almost in the corner. The puck hit the goalies pad and took a favorable rebound right into the slot where John Backes was ready to smack it home and tie the game. The crowd erupted, you could almost feel how loud they were.

1st Overtime
IF - 2
DUL - 2

The first overtime was very conservative compared to the regulation periods. Both teams were overly cautious to not allow any scoring chances against. The Voyageurs actually began using their center as almost a third defenseman with the wingers being the attackers. None the less, the period ended with no goals scored and a second overtime would be needed.

2nd Overtime
IF - 3
DUL - 2

The puck dropped for overtime two and things took a turn right away. The draw was won by Duluth, but the defender who the puck was won to tripped on a bump in the ice, losing the puck. International Falls was right on the loose puck, getting a 3 on 1 offensive chance. Mason was the puck carrier, he skated towards the left boards, and looked to the center where he found Backes breaking to the net. He sauced the puck over the floundering defenseman right to Backes to tapped the puck past the diving goalkeeper for his second goal of the game. The International Falls Ice are your 1959 Kellogg Cup Champions!

The Tschida Trophy was awarded to Anders Johansson of the South St. Paul Mavericks for the second year in a row for almost single handedly leading his team into the playoffs.

Re: Minnesota Amateur Hockey League

What a game! Love the detail about tripping over a bump in the ice; not something you see a whole lot in modern hockey. Congrats to the capital-I Ice on another Cup!

A friggin' bump in the ice. You gotta be... *lots of NSFW cuss words* ...kidding me. If I was Duluth I would challenge that right away. Absolutely disgraceful.

That's just part of the game at this point in time. The Ice play on outdoors and after playing over a full game with no real effective ways to resurface the sheet it was bound to be in less than desirable conditions.

This event has caused a bit of a stir around the league. The Voyageurs are claiming that they were cheated out of a title because of the ice conditions and are leading a group of other teams who believe that the playoffs, or at least later rounds, should be played indoors. The main argument is to move the later rounds to St. Paul like the High School Hockey tournament, but there are still a lot of teams that are vehemently against this.

Re: Minnesota Amateur Hockey League

There were a number of announcements this offseason

  • 3 current teams adjusted their identities
  • 2 new rivalry trophies were created
  • 1 expansion team will join the Northland Hockey League
  • After completeting college and attempting to make an AHL team, Cloquet resident Brady Millen has decided to join his hometown Broncos, instantly making his team a contender in the Lake Superior League.

I also updated the archive on to include graphics for the rivalry trophies in the MAHL.

Lets start out with the two newest trophies.

Re: Minnesota Amateur Hockey League

The St. Paul Saints made a minor change, simply promoting their secondary logo to primary status and making the script their wordmark. The Saints jerseys remain unchanged.

Re: Minnesota Amateur Hockey League

The Superior Lakers made the first change to their look in the teams 36 year history by introducing a proper logo. The script will still be used on the uniforms, but the new logo will be used in media. The logo is an oval with a Lake Freighter inside. Lake Freighters are often referred to as Lakers and are common on Lake Superior.

The Lakers used the new logo as a chance to update their uniforms as well. The basic idea of the jersey is the same, but the stripe now has a black outline and the hem stripe has been changed.

Re: Minnesota Amateur Hockey League

The Red Wing Chiefs were the final team to adjust their identity. They also opted to ditch their script in favor of a real logo. Their new logo is a roundel with the team name inside with crossed hatchets in the center.

The Chiefs left their jerseys unchanged except for replacing the scripts with the new logo.

Re: Minnesota Amateur Hockey League

We have one expansion team joining the Northland Hockey League this season. Fargo is the biggest city in North Dakota and is directly across the border from Moorhead MN. After the Huskies were granted a team last year, co workers from Fargo wanted to form their own team, and they did just that. I would expect quite a rivalry between the Titans and Huskies.

The team will be called the "Titans" named for Fargo's importance in the area. Their logo is a shield with Fargo diagonally across the middle, the logo also features a Greek pattern. The team colors are green and gold.

Let me know what you think, comments are appreciated!

Re: Minnesota Amateur Hockey League

I love the chiefs new look and the titans logo and colors! A lot of your images aren't loading unfortunately, such as the superior lakers uniforms (I would assume that's the uniform) and the entire saints page.
