1907-1908 Ultimate Division Results

The Milwaukee Brewmasters claimed their first Ultimate Division title, clinching the top spot with a Week 21 win over Detroit Longtails.

Boston Shipwrights were close behind 1 point at season's end.  Brooklyn jockeyed for position at the top of the table, and even took possession at one point before fading.

Newly promoted Cleveland Forest and Detroit Longtails managed to remain in the top division while the Chicago West Side Kicks and Boston Gaelics received their demotion papers.

The West Side Kicks were demoted for the first time, while the Gaelics ended a three year run in the Ultimate Division.

The top 3 squads took all of the spots on the Top 11, with the Bridegrooms (5), Brewmasters (3), and Shipwrights (3).

1907-1908 Penultimate Division Results

Washington Insiders kept their demotion to the minimum of a single season by winning the Penultimate Division, 6 points clear of runner-up Cincinnati Scarlets.  Cincinnati earned the right to return to the Ultimate Division after a 4 Year stay in the Penultimate.  The Scarlets almost lost their ticket to the Ultimate when the fell in the last week to Washington DCAC.  Chicago Southsiders could have overtaken them, but the Windy city boys lost as well to the Insiders. The four newcomers all secured spot in the Penultimate for next season, while the New York Chieftains and Paterson True Blues claimed the lowest rungs in the Division and will be playing in the Eastern Regional Division next season.

1907-1908 Regional Division Results

Two squads from New Jersey - Old Nassau 1869 and Kearny Caledonians earned their way to the Penultimate Division.  The Princeton alumni-backed squad ran away with the title, while Kearny had to duel Fall River Spindles for the second spot.

Newcomers Scranton Electric City and Carnelian FC struggled and ended up at the bottom.  Fortunately for them, there was no demotion to the Sectional Divisions.

It was a tight race for the top two spots in the Mid-American Division.  Indianapolis came down from the Penultimate after a 1 year stay, and almost earned their way back.  They finished 2 points behind in third place.  A season-ending loss squelched their hopes.  A win would have tied them with Milwaukee Cream City, and Circle City's better goal would have seen them through.

Newcomers St. Louis All-Saints and Waukesha Town 1866 finished at the bottom, but not too far off the pace of the rest of the league.

Once again, the longtime rivals of Alameda Vampires and Oakland Hornets battled it out for supremacy in the West.  This time, the Hornets finished ahead of the defending champion Vampires.

New squads Seattle Black Diamonds and San Francisco Barbary Pirates had tough seasons, finishing in 7th and 8th place.

Not sure if it was intentional but the Barbary script makes it look like Battbatty (to me at least)

1908 American Football Association Cup Final

The Milwaukee Brewmasters were the only one of the top four seeds to advance out of the first round.
The biggest upset was by the Green Bay Papermillers over the Boston Shipwrights.  The Papermillers kept on winning after that, topping the Louisville Racehorses, the New York Fomorians, and the other Cinderella team of the tourney, the Richmond Railers.

The final had a derby atmosphere as the two Dairy State contestants squared off.  In fact, some newspapers referred to it as the "Dairy Derby."  The Blatz Platz was packed for the event.  A special train ran from Green Bay to bring Papermiller fans to the game.

The match started slowly, but it was clear the Brewmasters were in control.  Willi Franz opened the scoring for the Brewmasters, heading in a corner from Sean Hy.  Irwin Day put another on the board after outrunning the Green Bay defense on a Pat O’Dea long pass.  Green Bay pulled one back in the 49th minute when Willy Randolph wove his way through the Brewmaster back line.  Milwaukee answered quickly two minutes later from a Richie Zerbel free kick.  However, Irwin Day put the game out of reach with a powerful first-time volley off of a cleared ball in the 55th.  Chris Page brought the Papermillers within two after a combination with Curtis Howe in the 62nd.  After that, the Pat O’Dea defense shut the Papermillers down, and the Brewmasters claimed their second AFA Cup.

In doing so, the Milwaukee Brewmasters completed a double, the first time since the 1901 Baltimore Chimney Swifts, in winning both the Ultimate Division and American Football Association Cup.

I can see that now.  I'll look to tweak once I get to posting new material.  Just a few more seasons to go.

1908 Columbia Challenge

With the Milwaukee Brewmasters having claimed both the Ultimate Division and the AFA Cup, the AFA decided to allow the Cup runner-up to take the fourth spot in the Columbia Challenge.  The Penultimate Division winners Washington Insiders joined the two Badger State clubs on a trip out to the Western Regional Division champion Oakland Hornets.

The locals fell to the Brewmasters 4:1.  Washington edged out Green Bay in a 1:0 shutout, ending the Papermakers' hopes for a rematch of their AFA final with the Brewmasters.

Green Bay won in the consolation game over Oakland.  While the Hornets took an early lead, Joel Price answered for Green Bay shortly before halftime.  A 52' goal by Royce Koch put the Papermakers in the lead for good.

The Brewmasters were hard-pressed to come up with a victory over the Washington.  All the scoring came over a seven minute period late in the first half.  The scoreless second half meant that the Brewmasters captured the first Triple Crown - the Ultimate Division, the American Football Association Cup, and the Columbia Challenge.  Later that summer, they would play in the Football World Championship.
