Yeah I'd avoid any kind of magician names for Birmingham (and even Charlotte and Nashville) because of the KKK.
I think Magicians is actually a good compromise between the Magic City name and staying away from any harsh imagery. Magicians are black top hats that you pull bunnies out of, Wizards are old men in robes.

It's better, as long as any sort of robed imagery is avoided. Then again, you may not want children's entertainers as your mascot for a football team. I love the wizards name and I think it lends itself to awesome imagery but it's that historical context that just can't be avoided, especially in Birmingham.

Personally I think Wizards does have a home in the league, I think it's a little further South. On the subject of nonthreatening names, there is a fairly popular team called the Dolphins

Birmingham Veterans- Birmingham is home to one of the oldest and biggest Veteran's Day celebrations
Boston Heist- In 1990, more than $500 Million worth of art was stolen from Boston's Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum
Buffalo Border Cats- Buffalo is on the US-Canadian border
Charlotte Jocks- Tough, shorter version of "Jockeys" who participate in Charlotte's Queen's Cup
Chicago Storm- Play on the "Windy City" nickname
Dallas Wranglers- Good Western name

BY GOD, FROM THE TOP ROPES, IT'S CHARLOTTE WITH A STEEL CHAIR!!!!
What a surprise! The QC makes a last-minute push to steal a spot (where have I heard this story before?)!
Anyway, my name suggestions:
Birmingham - Hammers. The city is known for its steel- and ironworking, and both Steelers and Vulcans are taken.
Boston - Olympians. Taken after Boston's nickname of "Athens of America". (I am fully aware of the history behind this name and AHSports Fantasy, but I think it's ok here because the hockey team is the Titans and also in LA.)
Buffalo - Steamers. Steamboats were often found on Lake Erie, where Buffalo is.
Charlotte - Firebirds (I know this was my AltHL submission, but I love the name so much and it almost won). I'll explain this one in great detail below because it means a lot to me.
Chicago - Liners. Named for the L, Chicago's elevated transit system, which runs different colored lines. "The L's" could be a nickname (especially if the team is bad).
Dallas - Blazers. Dallas' heat is infamous around the country, but this also serves to reference the neon lights that blaze at night.
Firebirds (cont.) - For those that didn't see my explanation for the AltHL, Firebird is a statue found in Uptown Charlotte in front of the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art, placed in 2009 as a permanent addition to the city. It's a very unique form, consisting of the bird itself placed atop an arch and covered in pieces of mirror and colored glass. It can be seen here:
(If you can't tell where the bird ends and the arch begins, don't worry, most people can't at first glance. You can see the bird's talons near the middle, the black bits connecting to the arch.)
The status has become somewhat of an icon for the city and its art scene as well as a must-see when visiting the Queen City. While I don't think the logo for a football should come from this form, I think the name is suitably fierce and local to make it the perfect name for Charlotte's AltFL franchise.
Be careful, someone might come in and steal it. Give me a moment and I’ll get my name picks in.

Birmingham Vulcans- There is a statute of Vulcan in Birmingham from the 1904 World's Fair
Boston Heist- In 1990, more than $500 Million worth of art was stolen from Boston's Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum
Buffalo Border Cats- Buffalo is on the US-Canadian border
Charlotte Flyers- Paying homage to NC's "First in Flight" slogan
Chicago Storm- Play on the "Windy City" nickname
Dallas Bandits- Just a good, fierce, western name
I had already suggested Vulcan and I'm pretty sure that Flyers had been suggested for Charlotte.

QUICK IMPORTANT UPDATE!
I have to update our franchise list. I just realized that the graphic that I posted has one incorrect city. Phoenix should be in instead of Houston. The list had changed a lot in the final hours and it must have slid past me. It shouldn't impact anything yet except for your alignment submissions that you have sent in. If you have submitted an alignment option please send how would you want me to switch that up. Once again my apologies.
For those of you who are interested here were the rankings and the city scores. These scores are out of a maximum of 260 possible points.

Birmingham - Alabama Legends - Many great football colleges and legends have come out of the state, so paying tribute to all those before them makes perfect sense.
Boston - Harbormen - A classic name befitting of the history of the Boston Harbor and the Boston Tea Party.
Buffalo - Heat - Ironic name, but the heat of the Buffalo wing still resonates, which was of course invented in Buffalo, New York
Charlotte - Carolina Hawkeyes - Kitty Hawk gave us the first plane flight, the Hawkeye name befitting of Charlotte.
Chicago - Smugglers - Chicago was famous for being a center of alcohol smuggling in Prohibition times, and this name is a good homage to that.
Dallas - Brahmas - The Brahman bull is one of the many livestock animals Texas is known to have, and an intimidating one at that.

Yeah, I had tallied up the points on my own (but my totals were a little off, probably just a slightly different points system) and I was confused when Houston, who had placed behind Hartford, Baltimore, and VB on my list as well had made the cut.

Haha, self-awareness of what you did doesn't make it any better.

Alabama/Birmingham Redtails - While probably a better name for a team based in Montgomery, the nod to the Tuskegee Airmen in a league made up of mostly African-American players is too good not to at least mention.
Boston/ New England Renegades - Yeah, I pitched it for the AtlHL. No, I don't remember how well it did.
Buffalo Wings - You know why.
Charlotte/ Carolina Kings - Seconded for the city, NASCAR, and Richard Petty...
Chicago Pride- I have honestly never seen a city more in love with their flag.
Dallas/ Texas Outlaws- Hadn't seen this one mentioned yet.
