Re: The AltHL - Group C Voting & Owner Application!

Group C ideas:
Chicago Butchers-Pays homage to the historic Stockyards on the South Side. Embraces an aggressive image.
Colorado Blast-References both the mining industry, but also to the Air Force Academy.
Nova Scotia Claymores-Didn't want to ape the Citadel name, wanted to tie in to the Province's Scottish roots.
Seattle Fleet-The term works for planes just as well as it does for ships.

Group D ideas:
New York Burros-Yeah, it's wired but it is a reference to the five boroughs of the city.
Vancouver Lumberjacks-Honors Johnny Canuck, but without mentioning his name.
Portland Skates-Could work well if Nike gets involved with the league's uniforms.
Québec Nationale-Nothing really special about this choice.

The reason the jets chose not to be called the burros was to avoid rivals calling the team...

Re: The AltHL - Group C Voting & Owner Application!

Seattle Stags:  I was going to go with Jets, since one of Seattle's many nicknames is "Jet City".  However, I'm pretty sure it'd be ineligible, so I'll go with a safer pick of Stags.

Chicago Tigers:  I know, I know.  There aren't really Tigers in Chicago.   The thing is, I wanted to do a theme that hadn't been done yet (Windy City, Cold, or Mafia themes).   Plus, Bears, Cubs, and Bulls don't appear in the natural wild in Chi-Town anyway, so why not a great animal with Tigers?

Halifax Kingfishers: I'm seconding this one as it does tie in with the city itself and we could use more bird theme teams anyway.  Plus, they look cool as heck!

Denver Dinosaurs:  Also a reference to the fact Colorado has a state fossil.  I know we had one suggestion of Stegos, but I thought this could be a nice alternative as Dinosaurs (or Dinos for short if you'd like) gets an alliteration bonus.

Vancouver Bears:  I know we already had a Vancouver Kodiaks and in the past, there was a Vancouver Grizzlies, but Bears is just being used as another option to consider if you don't like Kodiaks, as I like the bear theme.

Portland Thorns:  I like the idea of this one.  Thorns isn't by any means the toughest name out there, but it certainly fits the City of Roses theme.

New York Mastodons/Mammoths: My first pick is Mammoths.  I know it's used in IceHL.  However, I just want to be clear on if just having the same team name as them is completely ineligible.  Or would it be fine because it's not a New York based team?  If it is ineligible, my pick will be Mastodons.  New York is the biggest city in North America, so I wanted a name that fits that theme.   Mastodons (pre-historic elephants) were big themselves, so I liked the idea.

Quebec Diamants:  Seconding this one as it sounds really cool and otherwise, I'm drawing a blank with Quebec.

Re: The AltHL - Group C Voting & Owner Application!

The Battle for Philadelphia!

Believe it or not we are headed to a Run Off.  After a week of voting we have our names for the Bay Area, Toronto, and Minneapolis.  However after a week of voting we have a tie in the City of Brotherly Love.  But the exciting thing is that it wasn't just a tie it was a three-way tie. All three names ended up with 72 points. So in an exciting 24 hour run off you will need to follow the link below and choose just one of the team names.  Philadelphia will be announced with the other three teams tomorrow.  Sunday will be the launch of the polls for Group C and D.  Monday I will release the guidelines for the next stage of the AltHL project - the LOGOS!  As for now, our finalists are...

The Philadelphia Generals
The Philadelphia Founders
The Philadelphia Brigade

The Philadelphia Run Off

I couldn't believe it.  All three names took turns in first place throughout the week and then of course all landed with the same amount points.  We'll see tomorrow how it goes!

One of these names would certainly be DQ'd, and three would be questionable.

1. The Vancouver Lumberjacks were the name of Vancouver's IceHL team (same reason the Chicago Hitmen were DQ'd), and in fact, the name survived several rebranding polls therein.
2. Chicago Butchers is the name of Chicago's AFA concept team on the CCSLC, and the Nova Scotia Claymores and Quebec Nationale were the names of their respective PHL concept teams on the CCSLC...out of respect for how these leagues inspired this forum, they might get DQ'd as well.

Re: The AltHL - Group C Voting & Owner Application!

It is time to welcome Group B!

We had some close and exciting races to name the teams from Toronto, Minneapolis, Philadelphia and the Bay Area.  We even had a three-way run off for the city of Philadelphia! Today we announce the winning names for Group B.  Tomorrow I will open the voting for Group C.  Group C will run from Sunday-Tuesday.  Then Group D will run from Wednesday-Friday.  On Monday I will roll out the rules and time line for Round 4: The Logos.

It was the will of the league that we bring in the San Francisco Dragons.  The Dragons were destined to be an AltHL franchise.  The name Dragons was nominated for Montreal, Boston, Vancouver and the Bay Area.  The Dragons won the vote with 80 points.  They were followed closely by the Firebirds and Grizzlies which both had 76.  The name 'Dragons' was nominated by BaluTheBear.

The next team will make all of those Loonatics happy.  They may have a tough travel schedule ahead of them so it is good that their nickname is a Loon.  The Loons are the state bird of Minnesota.  Yes, it is also the nickname of Minneapolis United.  We decided that it was acceptable.  The AltHL community agreed.  The Loons won with 91 points. They were followed by Owls (83), Geminis (82) and Caribous (73).  The name 'Loons' was nominated by NeoPrankster.

Next comes the most dramatic vote yet.  The vote was between Generals, Founders and Brigade.  They all finished the vote with 72 points.  Close behind that group was Boxers and Liberty with 69 points.  The runoff was definitive.  The winning name, 'Founders', won the run off with 52.2% of the vote.  The name Founders was nominated by Darknes.

Finally, we have the Toronto Terriers.  The Terriers earned 86 votes.  They were followed by Hogs (78) and Towers (76).

These intros were more challenging this time around.  While Dragons are fearsome, Loons, Founders and Terriers are not the most intimidating.  They all will however lend well to cool identities.

If you have any questions, concerns, or you want to see a closer snapshot of a vote feel free to DM me. It is time to start thinking about the logos for our teams.  I will work on the guidelines this weekend and announce them on Monday.  But a sneak peak would be to fully consider a Primary Logo, WordMark, Color Scheme and a Secondary Logo (optional).  If you are not a designer or are not super confident in your abilities you can still submit ideas that I can help render.  The goal is to get as many designs as possible!  Check back in tomorrow for the vote for Group C.
