Re: The All-Time Boxing Classic

It is now time to introduce the participants in the Featherweight division for the All-Time Boxing Classic!   This includes fighters from the Junior Featherweight (122 lbs) and the Featherweight (126 lbs) divisions in my Title Bout Championship Boxing simulator game!   It's interesting to compare boxing's weight classes with the sport that's often considered boxing's rival, Mixed Martial Arts (MMA).   We're already on our 3rd of the classic boxing weight classes at the 126 lbs limit, yet in MMA (which uses the same names for its weight classes as boxing), 125 lbs is the weight limit for its smallest weight class, Flyweight.  Boxing weight limits are comparatively much lower than in MMA.  Just a random tidbit that I find interesting.  Anyway, here's our Featherweights!

Finally, our boxing analysts are at it again with the latest round of predictions for who they believe will win the Featherweight portion of the All-Time Boxing Classic!

Johnny Armando: We were robbed when Salvador Sanchez's career was cut short, what he could have done with a full career.... it's a cliché, but let's just say the sky was the limit for this young man (EDITOR'S NOTE: In real life, like far too many in this contest, Salvador Sanchez tragically died young, at just 23 years of age. Far too young, irregardless of what he did with his life).  A powerful counter-puncher, his striking accuracy will win him the tournament and finally allow him to live up to his full potential!

Dick Dingleberry: Kid Chocolate (real name Eligio Sardinias-Montalbo.  You're welcome, Chip N. Daylin) was a stellar boxer who's speed, power, and skills wowed everyone back in the day.  He often got accused of not taking the sport seriously enough.  Well, in the All-Time Boxing Classic, you won't need to worry about motivation.  He'll be plenty motivated enough for this contest!

Jebediah McAllister: All the members of the Featherweight division has a familiarity with each other.  All but two of these fighters has fought at least one of member of this weight class, (and both of those guys fought current IBHOF Hall of Famers from different weight classes).  So there's a level of familiarity within this group.  I'm going with Jim Driscoll here.  He only fought two of the members of his division, but he's 4-0 against them.  So, it's tough, but I'll go with this classic fighter to win!

Chee McGee: I'm taking Jeff Fenech here.  He loved to swarm his opponents like flies to poo.  And that's fitting, because he could knock the poo outta you!  He dealt with hand pain his whole career (probably from punching his opponents too hard) and you gotta wonder how much that messed with his career.   Won't have to worry about that here.

Chip N. Daylin: Sandy Saddler reminds me of me when I was just a skinny nerd before I discovered my Strip-Away-the-Pounds Exercise Program.   Tall, lanky, and non-threatening enough to make jocks want to shove him into a locker.  Except this dude didn't put up with that nonsense!  He knocked over 100 jocks out!  No way am I not picking him!  (Dick: I'm pretty sure Sandy Saddler wasn't a nerd.....)

There you have it!   Next time out, we explore a weight class that's particularly interesting to me, the Lightweight Division!  C + C, and predictions always welcomed!

Re: The All-Time Boxing Classic

Hello again everyone!   It's time for the next weight class in the All-Time Boxing Classic!   This weight class is particularly interesting for me, as 4 of these fighters match my measurements exactly (5'7" height, 70" reach) and quite a lot of other boxers are within an inch in height and/or reach.   I never got into boxing as a youth, but that tells me this would have been the weight class I'd have likely fought in if I had.   The boxers in this part of the tournament as listed as Lightweights (135 lbs) Junior Lightweights (130 lbs) in the Title Bout Championship Boxing simulator I'm running the ABC on.

Here are your Lightweight participants!

And of course, we can't forget about our boxing analysts' predictions!   With such a loaded field, these ended up being rather interesting!

Johnny Armando: Even in a crowd of legends, Julio Cesar Chavez's resume stands out for me. A 3 division champion that won over 100 fights and fought several other Hall of Famers, his insane levels of aggression, along with an iron chin, will win him the tournament.

Dick Dingleberry: It's a shame Benny Leonard often gets forgotten by the causal fans, because he was an absolute pleasure to watch fight, (Chee McGee: Well, to be fair, you're also the only guy old enough to remember watching him fight.... Dick: Shut up!).   He lived up to his nickname of the Wizard (EDIT: his full nickname was actually the Ghetto Wizard).  Just incredibly talented and intelligent, and with knockout power to boot!   Even Mr. Chip N. Daylin here could appreciate him.   He held the belt for six years in a highly competitive weight class and beat back every legend he came across!   Get your textbooks ready kids, Benny will teach you all a lesson in the art of boxing!

Jebediah McAllister:  This is one of the hardest weight classes for me to make a pick in.   It's a deep field and nearly everyone has fought fellow Hall of Famers, usually more than one.   Guys like Sammy Mandell, Ken Buchanan, and Oscar De La Hoya nearly got my pick.   However, I'm going with Ike Williams here.  He fought 4 of his fellow weight classmates and only had a losing record to one, (against Jimmy Carter... no not the former President of the U.S..   Worth noting though that Williams got caught up with the mob and was offered to throw that fight.   He denied taking the dive, but he DID lose that fight....).   Without the influence of organized crime, I'm confident that Williams wins this tournament, yes I like Ike!

Chee McGee: With his sweet, sweet, combination of speed and power, "Sugar" Shane Mosley was rightfully considered to be the best pound for pound boxer in the world, period!   Listen, you don't get to be called "Sugar" if you ain't a treat to watch fight!   And Mosley was indeed a treat to watch fight!  He's a 3 weight class champion that fought a ton of tough competitors.  I know this is a really competitive field, but I'm convinced that he's going to dominate this field!

Chip N. Daylin:  In a sport where you win by, like, knocking out your opponents, I can't not pick George Chaney to win this!  I mean, his nickname is, like, literally "K.O."!  And he lived up to it too, with over 70 knockout wins!

Hope you all enjoyed, we'll get into more deep waters with the ultra-competitive Welterweight division next!  C + C, and predictions are always welcomed!

Re: The All-Time Boxing Classic

I'm going to have to take de la Hoya or Whitaker here simply cause I've heard of them lol. Plus, I like their chances based on the little I know about them. Otherwise, it's up in the air and I can't wait to see the results.

Both are pretty solid picks in their own right for sure!   Lightweight is going to be a really fun, competitive weight class to watch as there's really no true favorite to win this division.  Heck, I never even mentioned stars like Alexis Arguello, Hector Camacho, and Roberto Duran (and more!), any of them could easily win this too!

He certainly could pull it off!

Steelman wrote:

For sure!  Gans' power was something else, though he was also well known as being a scientific fighter that was WAY ahead of his time in terms of studying opponents.  His intelligent approach to boxing definitely helped him land the right punches at the right time!  IMO, he's yet another legitimate contender for winning the Lightweight portion of the ABC!

It is now time to introduce you to the participants in the Welterweight division of the All-Time Boxing Classic!  Welterweight is often considered one of boxing's premier weight classes and for good reason!   It's often among the deepest divisions in terms of competitive depth, regardless of era.   And trust me, the ABC's Welterweights will not disappoint in that regard.   Consisting of boxers that are considered Welterweights (147 lbs) and Junior Welterweights (140 lbs) in my Title Bout Championship Boxing game, this weight is LOADED with superstars.  Just see for youself... here are the Welterweights!

Our boxing analysts definitely had a hard time with their predictions this time for sure!

Johnny Armando:  I could probably pick 10 of these guys and still not predict the correct winner!  However, I've got to take Sugar Ray Leonard here.   In my opinion, he may be the most skilled fighter to ever grace the boxing ring, Leonard's combination of speed, game planning, natural talent, and killer instinct were otherworldly at the time!  He'll be a nightmare of a matchup for everyone else in the contest!

Dick Dingleberry: Johnny's right, this field is ridiculously crowded!   However, I'm pretty confident about my prediction.  There's a lot of guys in the ABC that won championships in 3 weight classes.   However, only one of them held championships for 3 weight classes AT THE SAME TIME (and when there were fewer weight classes to boot)!   And that man is Henry Armstrong.  A lot of fighters worry about fighting pretty sometimes.   Armstrong just blew through fighters, wore them down, and didn't allow them to dance about.   I think he'll replicate that here and win this contest!

Jebediah McAllister: Not surprisingly, a lot of these guys are pretty familiar with each other.   There are a couple of guys who never lost to their fellow weight classmates, but my pick is 6-1 against his opponents.   Sugar Ray Robinson fought 4 of the opponents in this weight class, losing only once (to Carmen Basilio and Ray avenged that in his very next fight).   Robinson had a ton of power to go along with his athleticism.  Some consider him the best fighter in this weight classes' history and it's easy to see way!  I like his chances!

Chee McGee: With so many killers in this division, you've gotta be able to handle the offensive firepower being thrown at you.   This sport isn't just about knocking people out, it's also about not getting knocked out!   My pick is Floyd Mayweather Jr.  There's a good reason he never lost a fight and that's because he is very likely the best defensive boxer the sport has ever seen.   Plus, with his punch accuracy, he'll do plenty enough damage to his opponents without endangering himself.  And he may be from a recent era, but he fought an insane amount of legends.   Accounting for his wins over guaranteed future Hall of Famers like Manny Pacquiao and Canelo Alvarez, Mayweather has got wins over around 8 current or future IBHOF members!  He's got this!

Chip N. Daylin: He might have the most loses out of any of the Alphabet fighters (EDITOR's NOTE: We think that's his nickname for the ABC participants, but it's Chip so who knows?) but I'm taking the guy who's, like, listed last alphabetically out of everyone, Fritzie Zivic.  He had over 80 knockouts, so he just seems, like, a slugger type that'll be fun to watch!  People say he was, like, a really dirty fighter, but hey, you're only cheating if you're caught, right?  (Dick: What kind of attitude is that to have?!  Aren't you a fitness instructor?  What's that teaching your clients?!)

So there you have it.   Any predictions for this weight classes that you have are always welcome, as is C + C you have for this project.   The competition doesn't lighten up with our next weight class, the Middleweight division!

Definitely solid picks there!  Always nice to have a few favorites to root for in case one of them falters!

It's now time to introduce the Middleweights who will be participating in the All-Time Boxing Classic!  This is yet another of boxing's most revered and historically deep weight classes, as evidenced by the fact that there are 43 boxers in this weight class, the most out of any of the ABC's 8 weight classes!   So let's not waste any more time and get right to it, here are the Middleweights (consisting of fighters from my boxing simulator's Middleweight -160lbs- and Junior Middleweight -154 lbs- divisions)!

As usual, I've am providing the links to each fighter's International Boxing Hall of Fame biography to help you get a better understand of those boxers that you may be less familiar (or flat out unfamiliar) with.

And of course, our boxing experts have plenty to say about who they think is going to win this portion of the ABC!

Johnny Armando:  I've gotta take Bernard Hopkins here, in such a deep field, he really stands out for a few reasons.  First off, he has the record for the most Middleweight title defenses at 20 defenses (and beat multiple Hall of Famers during that reign).   He's also the oldest boxer to ever win a title, winning one of 48 years of age, which is incredible!  He's an aggressive fighter, yet has excellent defense as well, which will serve him well in this tournament!   I'm really excited to see what peak level Hopkins does here!

Dick Dingleberry: If you like defensive based fighters, Johnny, you'd have loved to watch Mike Gibbons fight.  I think elusive is the word to use to best describe him.  He could dance around anyone, and it's awfully hard to get knocked out if your opponents can't touch you.   Gibbons never officially won a title, (though he won claiming rights to it during his career, the actual Middleweight title was never on the line during his fights... a shame!) but his defensive boxing style made him one of the best to ever lace up the boots!   He had plenty of knockouts too, so he wasn't a weakling or anything like that.   He's my pick to win the ABC's Middleweight division!   By the way, his brother Tommy is also participating in the ABC as a Light Heavyweight, so this was definitely a boxing family!

Jebediah McAllister: Just a really tough division for me to pick, almost as tough as it'd be to pick which cow to tip over as a kid or which chicken to pick on (Chip: You picked on chickens?  That's, like, really mean!   Jebediah: Well, there wasn't much to do as an Amish kid... besides they would only take it for so long before they'd call all the other chickens and attack me as revenge.  They were kinda coo-coo, or as I'd call it, cuckoo!).  I must have animals on the mind because after thinking really hard about it though and looking at who beat who, I like Dick Tiger here.  He went 5-2-1 against 3 of his fellow weight classmates and didn't have a losing record against any of them.  Seeing who he beat too made a difference to me!  (Chee: No Eye of the Tiger jokes Jeb?   You're doing it wrong, man!)

Chee McGee: We all hate that kind of guy who can dish it, but can't take it, right?   Well, you don't have to worry about that with Marvelous Marvin Hagler, (EDITOR'S Note: By the way, that actually was his real legal name.  He had it changed that way to make announcers regard to him as Marvelous since he got annoyed they often didn't.   Thought that was pretty funny!).   Everyone knows about his punching power (52 KOs out of his 62 wins) but it's easy to forget that he had a heck of a chin too.  Seriously, this man got knocked down once in his entire career (and that's still disputed to this day)!   He might be well be Marvelous, but you might consider re-nicknaming his Iron Man, because you couldn't knock him out with a sledgehammer, (though he probably will knock you out!).

Chip N. Daylin: As impressive as Hagler's knockout percentage is, Chee, I think I have that beat with my pick.  Stanley Ketchel had 46 knockouts in 49 fights, which is, like, nearly all of his wins!   Apparently, he had a crazy life and, like, died really young, which is probably why nobody remembers him anymore, (Chee: They also don't remember him because nobody besides Dick is old enough to have watched him.  Dick: Haha, funny, make fun of the old guy, will you?  Well guess what, you little whipper-snapper?  You're gonna get old one day too you know?).  I think he'll knock so many people out, that younger boxing fans will go back and read up on this guy, because he seems like he could have been pretty special!

And there you have it.   Just two more weight classes to go before the tournament begins!   Next up, we step up to the Light Heavyweight division!   C + C, predictions, always welcomed!

Re: The All-Time Boxing Classic

I'm not very familiar with boxing but this is really cool. Love the commentators, it's a nice personal touch on the series. I recognize some of the names but is there anyone you'd recommend for me to root for?
