Re: Gorania Football League

1958 PRESEASON

Meanwhile, the Blalock and Warner clubs have announced the official colours they will use for their inaugural seasons in 1959.Blalock opted to go with orange and black, with many speculating the nickname will involve a tiger theme. On the other hand, Warner chose sky blue and navy blue, believing that the club would embrace their own identity by selecting sky blue as their primary colour. The Warner official nickname will be selected at a later date, before the commencement of the 1959 Gorania Football League season.

PART 2: DAY TRAVELS TO MELBOURNE AND GEELONG

The Day Football Club took a trip to Melbourne and Geelong to play Footscray and Geelong. At the Western Oval, against the previous year's sixth placed Bulldogs, the Knights brought a fight in windy conditions, with both sides marred by inaccuracy, scoring a combined total of 13.41 (119). The Bulldogs prevailed against Day by 19 points.

The following week, the Knights travelled west to play Geelong, the previous year's wooden spooners. At Kardinia Park, the Cats got the early jump, leading by 20 points at the first change and 21 at half-time. The Knights played better in the second half, but fell short by seven points against Geelong. The sources for the Footscray and Geelong jumpers are from:

Re: Gorania Football League

1958 SEASON
Leading Goalscorer: Elliott Evans (Ruddy) - 96 goals
League MVP: Samuel Wheaton (Day)

Much like last year, Elliott Evans dominated the goalscoring tally, having the most goals for the third consecutive year. Ruddy and Chavez continued to head the table, while Richburg continued to struggle. The first round included an exciting affair between Chavez and Ruddy, with the Longhorns prevailing by one goal. Ulbrich upset Day, Xiong downed Angerer and Grimm comfortably accounted for Richburg.

Ruddy had yet another sensational season, this time only losing three games. The Longhorns' losses were all to Xiong. Elliott Evans performed strongly in front of goal as aforementioned. Led by captain Piotr Dunin and coach Horace Yancey, the Longhorns were difficult to defeat anywhere they played. Their dominance should see the Longhorns as favourites to win the GFL.

Day continued to go from strength to strength after winning the 1957 GFL premiership. It wasn't all easy for Day though: they lost three of their first seven matches, and got swept by Ruddy, who they defeated in the previous year's Grand Final. Samuel Wheaton continued to perform strongly at his best, earning himself MVP honours.

Chavez had another solid season, but did not look like threatening for a top two spot. New recruit Ravi Havaldar, from the Southern Football League in Gorania, led the Nationals' goal kicking tally. The Nationals were a force at home, winning eight and drawing one of their eleven matches, though had mixed results on the road, en route to a 13-1-7 record.

Realistically, there should have been a top three with the woeful records of the bottom five. The best of that lot turned out to be a finals-bound side. That team turned out to be Xiong. Buoyed by sweeping Ruddy, it was enough for the Bears to book a finals berth. A win against Richburg in the final round, helped by the Bulldogs' inaccuracy, secured a finals berth. Their form was patchy, never winning consecutive games, as they compiled a 9-12 record. Arlington's age slowly caught up to him as he was unable to play a full season, as the Bears had the second worst defence.

Right in the hunt for a finals spot was Ulbrich, who fell short by one game. Whilst defeating Grimm gave them a possibility to end up in fourth spot, they needed to rely on Angerer and Xiong losing. The former lost to Ruddy, which allowed the Pilots one hand on fourth spot, though the Bears held off the Bulldogs to keep Ulbrich out of the finals series. Whilst Paul Christodoulou performed well in the forward line for the Pilots, the rest of the Ulbrich team did not particularly shine as consistently as he did.

Angerer looked set to play finals after a strong start, starting the season 4-1. Unfortunately for the Bulls, there were lots of injuries and they suddenly slid down the table, only winning three more games of the year. Jay Davies performed strongly before succumbing to a knee injury against Day, ending his season. In addition, the Bulls' anaemic forward line prevented them from scoring high scores to win games.

The glory days for Grimm seem to be over after falling to second last. The remnants of their premiership winning teams have been lost, most notably the retirement of Mitchell Yamada at the start of this season. Without his leadership and experience, the Reapers fell to 6-15, contending to avoid the wooden spoon. Furthermore, the defence was leaky, conceding more points than any other side.

Despite improving to 6-15, the Bulldogs did not do enough to avoid their fifth wooden spoon in six years. In spite of this, some of their younger players such as Sam Parker and Dimitri Kachusov, showed promise. However, the Bulldogs' weak forward line ranked them last in points scored. Matej Vidmar led a anaemic forward line, and scored a relatively large percentage of the Bulldogs' goal tally. The rest of the forward line did not manage more than 25 goals each individually.
Major Events:
-Ruddy's 18-3 record broke the record of Grimm's 17-1-3 record in 1954.
-Grimm's record of 6-15 was their worst in history, worse than their 8-12 record in 1949.
-Grimm in round 19 achieved a very accurate score of 16.1 (97). Unfortunately for the Reapers, they fell short against Chavez by 10 points in that match.
-Much like the previous year, the previous year's runner-up swept the previous year's premier.

Feedback, comments and criticism are welcome on the presentation!

Re: Gorania Football League

1958 FINALS SERIES1ST SEMI FINAL
CHAVEZ VS XIONG
AT CHAVEZ CRICKET GROUND
13 SEPTEMBER 1958 - 2:10PM

Xiong, donning their change strip, came into the match as heavy underdogs, having recorded a 9-12 record to fall into fourth spot. They faced a hungry Chavez team expected to dominate the Bears. The Nationals started strongly, having scored the first four goals. Whilst the Bears slowly went back in the game, Chavez took a 22 point lead heading into quarter-time.
QT - Chavez 6.6 (42), Xiong 3.2 (20)

As rain started to tumble down, scoring dried up during the second stanza, with Chavez only managing a solitary goal. Xiong on the other hand managed three straight to reduce the lead to a respectable ten points.
HT - Chavez 7.6 (48), Xiong 6.2 (38)

The rain poured heavily throughout the third quarter. As both sides relied on a long kicking game, they struggled to get their hands on the ball, which prevented attacking opportunities. Xiong drew first blood of the third quarter, a behind by Allan Koch. Yet there was a long gap between scores, until Chavez scored an open goal from Ravi Havaldar. The Nationals kept pressing, but could only add one more goal, though given the wet conditions, a 22 point lead seemed to be quite comfortable.
3QT - Chavez 9.7 (61), Xiong 6.3 (39)

Suddenly the rain dried up, though early in the quarter both sides struggled to control the football. The Nationals surged forward, but managed five behinds in succession. Suddenly, Xiong found their purple patch, and managed the next three consecutive goals. With the scores reading 66-57, it looked like there was a dogfight.

Xiong moved forward again and Juan Rodriguez was found in the forward pocket to take his set shot. His shot hit the post, reducing the deficit to 8. Chavez countered with a goal from Colton Robertson, and added a few more behinds. Xiong managed a late consolation goal, but it wasn't enough to overtake Chavez. The Nationals were through to the preliminary final!
FT - Chavez 10.16 (76), Xiong 10.4 (64)

2ND SEMI FINAL
RUDDY VS DAY
AT SHEVCHENKO STADIUM
20 SEPTEMBER 1958 - 2:10PM

Keen to avenge their Grand Final loss from last year, Ruddy were determined to land their maiden flag. It was a Grand Final rematch at Shevchenko Stadium, with the home crowd hoping for a reversal of last year's result. Conditions were windy, with what was said to be a highly advantageous breeze favouring one end.Simply put, the first quarter was all Ruddy. The Longhorns completely dominated possession, as the Knights struggled to even advance past midfield. The Longhorns piled nine goals in the first quarter, while completely holding Day scoreless.
QT - Ruddy 9.6 (60), Day 0.0 (0)

It was Day's turn to use the wind in their favour and whilst they finally got on the board, helped by three goals from Joao Quaresma, the Knights had a significant deficit to overcome. The Longhorns, whilst being held goalless, managed the first score against the breeze of the entire match, and still held a 35 point lead.
HT - Ruddy 9.7 (61), Day 4.2 (26)

The wind continued to impact the match significantly, and true to form, Ruddy dominated the third. It was not to the extent of the first quarter, as the Longhorns managed 4.4 to the Knights' 0.4. Still, Ruddy held a seemingly match-winning 59 point lead, though Day have the advantage of using the breeze in their favour heading into the last quarter.
3QT - Ruddy 13.11 (89), Day 4.6 (30)

The Knights knew they had a lot of catching up to do. Despite having the wind in their favour, they had a large deficit to overcome. Day started the quarter strongly, with early majors from Richards, Tsang and Wheaton. Whilst it was the start the Knights wanted, 41 points was a large deficit to face. Unfortunately for Day, they only managed two more goals to succumb to the Longhorns by 30 points.
FT - Ruddy 13.14 (92), Day 9.8 (62)

PRELIMINARY FINAL
DAY VS. CHAVEZ
AT ZIMMER OVAL
27 SEPTEMBER 1958 - 2:10PM

Zimmer Oval, the home ground of the Day Football Club, finally had the opportunity to host finals football for the first time in nine years. A sellout crowd attended, with many fans overfilling the gates. Most pundits expected a Day victory, though Chavez were not to be pushovers.Day wasted a plethora of opportunities early before Chavez slotted a goal from Henry Koo. It proved to be the quarter's only goal, with the Nationals only leading by a solitary point.
QT - Day 0.8 (8), Chavez 1.3 (9)

In contrast to the previous quarter, both sides were more efficient in front of goal. Day finally broke their duck as Michael Boston scored a goal. Finlayson immediately scored another for Day, and suddenly the crowd were back up on their feet. Despite this, Chavez did not wilt. The Nationals went up a gear to score five consecutive goals before the Knights scored two. Chavez had an opportunity after the siren, a free kick paid 30 metres out straight in front. Colton Robertson converted to give Chavez a 12 point lead heading into the main break.
HT - Day 4.10 (34), Chavez 7.4 (46)

Goal scoring dried up during the third, with both sides coring two apiece; none consecutively. However, the Nationals slowly extended their buffer to lead by 15 points heading into the final change.
3QT - Day 6.12 (48), Chavez 9.9 (63)

A Grand Final spot was on the line. A trip to Ruddy awaited for the victor of this match. The Nationals held a 15 point lead to start the quarter, and having extended their lead after every break, most people believed that Chavez would emerge victorious.

Chavez got off to the perfect start, with Henry Koo slotting his fourth goal, extending the lead to 21 points. It was a giant mountain to climb for Day. The Knights however went up a gear, and scored three consecutive goals, which reduced the deficit to three. Suddenly the home crowd became intemperate, with the fans trying to cheer their Knights to victory.

Despite this, Chavez had their chances to surge forward, and added another goal, but having wasted their opportunities, they were unable to put Day away, only leading by 12. The Knights knew they had a chance, and scored two quick goals in succession to level the scores. Three minutes remained and scores were level at 11.12 (78) apiece!

Chavez won the ball out of the middle, and suddenly they were already forward. For the next minute, the ball was wrapped up in the Chavez forward line, without any clear opportunites to score. Richard Axelson bursted through the pack to get a quick kick away. Although he managed a behind, the Nationals were once again back in front with 50 seconds remaining!

Day had to be perfect with their kick in, and within a matter of moments, had the ball in their forward line. Time was their enemy, with there being ten seconds left. All of a sudden, Fred Iverson snapped the ball, and the ball wobbled through for a goal as time expired to snatch a win for Day! Afterwards, there was a pitch invasion from the fans to celebrate the victory.
FT - Day 12.12 (84), Chavez 11.13 (79)

Re: Gorania Football League

1958 GRAND FINAL
RUDDY VS. DAY
AT SHEVCHENKO STADIUM
4 OCTOBER 1958 - 2:30PM

This was a Grand Final rematch, and Ruddy were eager to make amends for their loss the previous year against the same opponent. Day on the other hand aimed for back-to-back Grand Final wins.Ruddy started the first quarter strongly, kicking the first three goals. The Longhorns generally dominated play throughout the term, scoring five goals to one to hold a 22 point lead heading into quarter-time. Flavio Bonaccorsi was the only multiple goalkicker for the Longhorns, scoring two goals for Ruddy.
QT - Ruddy 5.3 (33), Day 1.5 (11)

If Ruddy dominated the first, the second quarter was a total demolition of the Knights. Things gradually became more lopsided that it appeared to be checkmate against Day. The Longhorns piled six goals for the quarter, whilst holding the Knights to simply one behind.
HT - Ruddy 11.8 (74), Day 1.6 (12)

The match appeared as good as over. It seemed like the Longhorns have already secured the 1958 GFL premiership. Despite this, the third quarter was the complete opposite of the first two, as Day came out bursting through the blocks for the first five goals of the quarter. Suddenly, Ruddy fans became nervous as their seemingly unassailable lead evaporated.

The Longhorns managed the next two to relieve the pressure, though the Knights piled three unanswered goals to set up an exciting finish. The pendulum seemed to be in favour of Day, who reduced the margin to 23 points at the final change.
3QT - Ruddy 13.10 (88), Day 9.11 (65)

Knowing that they simply took it easy in the third quarter, Ruddy wouldn't let their guard down. And the Longhorns started out vigilantly, dominating possession early in the quarter. The Longhorns scored 2.5 before Day even got the ball in their forward line. Being 40 points ahead, the match seemed to be secure.

Despite this, Day started to generate opportunities, and scored two consecutive goals to reduce the deficit to 28 points. However it was as good as it got for the Knights as the margin stabilised: Ruddy held on to win by 29 points to win their maiden GFL premiership! For captain Piotr Dunin, it was a heartwarming moment as the Longhorns finally won a premiership at the third attempt.
FT - Ruddy 17.15 (117), Day 12.16 (88)

Re: Gorania Football League

Apologies for the delay, the 1959 season has been uploaded (the Facebook page shows it in full detail). I was going through personal issues that diminished my passion for the project.

Blalock and Warner logos:

1959 ladder:

In the end, Grimm ended up being premiers, defeating Ruddy in the Grand Final with a score of 10.21 (81) to 11.7 (73).

1960 PRESEASON:
Blalock and Warner jumpers (note that Blalock wore an orange away jumper for the 1959 season):
In response to the fine issued last year as Blalock played against Xiong, Blalock developed a new clash strip. The new clash strip was to be mostly white-based, and is to be worn every time the Tigers play the Bears away.
Star midfielder, John Flores, who was involved in all five of Grimm's premierships last decade, transferred to Richburg to help develop an upcoming side. With Flores' addition, the Bulldogs hope to push for the finals and secure their first finals appearance since 1951.

Re: Gorania Football League

Happy to see you again Goran! I hope you have been well.

I'll take a playoff birth, disappointed my Bulls couldn't get it done in the end but it is what it is.

Re: Gorania Football League

1960 SEASON
Leading Goalscorer: Evan Schulze (Blalock) - 97 goals
League MVP: Anton Suban (Richburg)

Entering the sixties, the season was relatively even. Teams as low as eighth spot had a chance of playing finals late into the season. Warner won their first ever round 1 match, defeating Angerer in the process. Ruddy demolished Richburg by 61 points, Chavez scraped past Grimm by three points, Day downed Blalock by 37 points and Ulbrich had a five goal win over Xiong in the first round. After six rounds, six teams were equal top with four wins each.

Having been the perennial doormats of the GFL, 1960 was a very different year for Richburg. The Bulldogs dominated the league, winning fourteen games en route to top spot, earning them premiership favouritism. The addition of John Flores gave the Bulldogs a boost in leadership, and young gun Anton Suban won the MVP award. Matej Vidmar found some new form entering thirty years of age as he managed 77 goals for the Bulldogs.

Next in second was Angerer. The Bulls managed an 11-7 record, showing the rest of the league that they were still contenders. The Bulls had the strongest defence in the league, only conceding 1323 points.

Chavez finished with an identical record to Angerer but their inferior percentage had them down to third. The Nationals started the season strongly with four wins on the trot, before treading water with other finals contenders. Despite his age, Shigeru Ueda had another stellar season; at age 34, he showed no signs of slowing down.

The Longhorns were not at their best form given many injuries for the side, however a strong finish propelled them into fourth spot at the expense of Ulbrich. Elliott Evans still had a great season for Ruddy despite missing five games due to injury, scoring 61 goals for the Longhorns.

Ulbrich, tipped to struggle by many, punched above their weight for a 9-8-1 record. The Pilots seemed highly likely to play finals, but losing their final two games saw them fall out of the four. The youth of the Pilots led the side, which could spark a bright future for Ulbrich.

The defending premiers fell off a perch, falling to sixth spot. Grimm looked promising early, starting 4-1 and 8-4. The Reapers seemed likely to contend for their sixth premiership in ten years. Unfortunately, injuries mounted up, and they fell to 9-9, missing out on the finals by one draw after a loss to Day. The Reapers struggled to win at home, only going 3-6 at Tatfeld Oval.

On paper, Day looked to have one of the strongest sides, but they managed only a 9-9 record. Poor chemistry among the Knights held them back, as they suffered yet another mid-season slump. The Knights still had a sniff, but lost too many games to fall short of the finals.

For a second year side in Blalock, the Tigers had a promising 8-10 record. Evan Schulze was well on his way to being a star, leading the GFL goalkicking tally. The Tigers won only one of their first seven matches, and afterwards had two three-game winning streaks in an eight game span, which had them at the brink of finals. Against Xiong in round 8, Schulze managed 15 goals for the side, showing his prowess up front. Amazingly, the Tigers had the highest points total of all sides, though their defence was graded the worst.

Warner still struggled, though they did not finish on the bottom. The Bluebirds had an awful 2-12 start, and they seemed on track to finish last. However, three wins in their final four matches ensured that they avoided the wooden spoon.

Xiong had a disappointing 4-14 season as they fell to the bottom of the ladder, below the two expansion sides. The Bears were never in the hunt and struggled to find form, not winning a single home game and succumbing to their first wooden spoon.

Major Events:
-Xiong was the first team to fail to win a home game in any GFL season.
-Evan Schulze's 15 goal haul against Xiong in round 8 was the highest goal tally any individual player managed in the GFL.
-The away team won more often than the home team (46 matches the away team won as opposed to 43 by the home team, with one draw).

Re: Gorania Football League

Hello everyone!
Whilst the Gorania Football League will not be a full story, the project is not completely dead. Writing the stories have taken a toll and it has deterred my enjoyment for the project. To confirm, I have designed the 2021 logos for the teams, in which the Gorania Football League has expanded to 18 teams!
