Background:

About Gorania - the country:
Gorania is an island country located in the Indian Ocean, north of the Kerguelen Islands and has a strong Australian influence, despite it having a larger population than Australia, especially from the state of Victoria, which has brought the state's love of Australian rules football to the country. Australian rules football is the most popular sport in the nation.

Cities of Gorania:

Chavez - the national capital located in southern Gorania. Chavez is an economic hub, with strong financial and business sectors, and has a strong government presence. It is the largest city, with a metropolitan population of 2.6 million. Culturally, it resembles London, Melbourne, New York City and Shanghai, as it hosts the national stock exchange, and a lively commercial scene. Chavez has a strong coffee culture, with coffee being popular inside the city and the capital district. It is a multicultural city as well, with many people from many different cultures calling the city home.

Day - a financial centre in eastern Gorania, and the capital of Wakefield. The metropolitan population sits at 1.5 million inhabitants. Day has a lot of financial and retail corporations, and as a result, the economy is heavily reliant on services. Culturally it has a strong resemblance to Chicago. In addition, Day is an inland port and its port traffic is one of the largest in the country, with a lot of supplies entering the civic ports.

Grimm - a relaxed city located in the west of Gorania, and is the state capital of Schil. The population is currently at 1.3 million people. Grimm culturally resembles Barcelona and Brisbane, and is known to be more relaxed in lifestyle, as well as being a cultural hub within the nation. The weather in Grimm is warmer compared to Chavez and Day. Grimm hosts clothing businesses, and is a major commerce hub. It has its share of water power, as it is located near a lake.

Richburg - known as the industrial hub of Gorania and the capital of Pappland. Resembling Manchester and Pittsburgh in the past, it has a strong manufacturing and industrial sector, with a civic population of 1.2 million as of 1949. Light industries such as textile manufacturing and heavy industries such as steel call the city home. It is the heart of manufacturing in Gorania. Inhabitants are colloquially nicknamed "Pappoos".

Angerer - the fifth largest city of Gorania. It is the capital of Cythos and is known to be a food products hub. It is known to be a leisurely city, with large lakes nearby, giving it a Minneapolis-like vibe. Due to its higher altitude, Angerer is a relatively colder city, giving it a similar cooling effect compared to Rwanda and Switzerland and has a population of 1.1 million.

Ulbrich - It is the capital of the small northern state of Abralia. The city has strong potential in being an engineering hub, due to the development of aircraft. Presently, there is a strong resemblance to Seattle with its thriving aviation industry. In addition to its thriving aviation industry, it is a major port of the country, with it being a major port of trade with many European countries and the Indian subcontinent. It holds a population of 297,500 people. One of the most prestigious universities in the country is located there, Warren University. Washington - a fast-growing city known with a growing business sector. The city population stands at 245,600. However as of 1949 the population is still relatively small.

Blalock - the capital of Elzburg, Blalock has enjoyed a population boom since the end of World War II with a vibrant film industry. It is the national hub of Goranian films. It has a small but fast-growing banking sector. The civic population is 241,600. Somewhat it resembles Buenos Aires and Los Angeles at present, but has a touch of Zurich.

Tolliver - a fast growing city, but as of 1949, the population is still relatively small.

Xiong - a city with a thriving fashion industry and hosts a population of 507,000. It is the smallest city to host a foundation team in the league. It is the second largest city in Wakefield.

Manderino - another blue-collar industrial city sitting near a lake in the state of Buffie, and is the state capital. Its population holds at 547,000 and most of its population are employed in the automotive industry. It is home to the local car brand, Mount. Effectively it is like Detroit in its heyday, as well as Toyota (the city, not the car), Hamamatsu and Geelong post-WWII.

Ruddy - The primary city of Thurley and the state's capital. It holds a population of 624,800. Ruddy is a services hub which surrounds a large agricultural area, in which the agricultural area in Thurley resembles North Dakota, Minnesota and Saskatchewan. Since Thurley is the breadbasket of Gorania, Ruddy is a centre of food processing, and the city is known for its bakeries. In addition, Ruddy has a strong culture in coffee, and the city has its signature coffee houses, comparable to Vienna.

Introducing the League: In 1945, a figure in George Nakamura suggested to form a national Australian rules football league around the country. He suggested teams from the five largest cities of Chavez, Day, Grimm, Richburg and Angerer to field teams in the national league, with a sixth team later chosen to be in Xiong, the second largest city in Wakefield. In November 1945, Nakamura suggested a proposed logo for the national league.

The 1946-1951 seasons will be mentioned in a streamlined post.

All city names derive from generated players from Madden 17-19 franchise modes I did with my friends.

Re: Gorania Football League

1952 OFFSEASON AND PRESEASON

The Gorania Football League have signed a deal with the national television broadcaster, Goranian Broadcasting Corporation, to broadcast two matches per round. In each city, the local team will have preference as a delayed match in order to maintain high attendance. The live match is match of the round, which is broadcast in all markets, except the teams that are involved in the match, which is on delay. Despite the exciting broadcast news, the league has threatened to pull Angerer out of the deal if they do not release a clash uniform anytime soon. The Bulls stated that they don't need one: "no other team wears green in the league!"

Before the start of the season, the Grimm and Angerer clubs travelled to Perth to play WANFL teams, with the Reapers playing South Fremantle and East Perth. The Bulls played East Fremantle and West Perth. Angerer lost poorly to the Cardinals, with West Perth leading by 73 points at half-time. The Bulls fought back bravely, keeping West Perth to only two goals in the second half, but the deficit was so large that they were difficult to catch. In spite of this, Angerer was the only Goranian team to manage a victory in Perth, with the Bulls defeating East Fremantle by three points.

In Grimm's case, whilst they fought bravely against a powerful South Fremantle outfit, playing against the likes of superstar Bernie Naylor, succumbed by sixteen points in the end in their first friendly. Naylor managed nine goals against the Reapers. The following week, the Reapers lost to the Royals by 25 points, after a strong third quarter from East Perth, aided by inaccurate kicking from Grimm. Hyun Ki-Chang managed a total of 3.10 for the match.

In player transfer news, Rocco Ferrari has moved north-east to play for Ulbrich, who needed more experience on the field. Ferrari hopes to bring the Pilots to the finals after a surprising 11-10 season. Ruddy gathered William Clay from Richburg: the Longhorns filling up some much needed experience. Clay's presence hopes to make Ruddy more competitive in 1952 after a tough first season.

Following up during the offseason, we have Xiong unveiling their theme song:

Disclaimer: It is based off the Chicago Bears fight song.

Bear down, Xiong Bears,
Make every kick play the way to victory!
Bear down, Xiong Bears,
Put up with a fight so fearlessly.
We'll never forget you thrilled Gorania,
As you showed no fear.
Bear down, Xiong Bears,
And let them know why you're wearing the crown!
Dare to beat the mighty black and golds,
Xiong Bears, bear down!

Feedback, comments and criticism are welcome on the presentation!

Re: Gorania Football League

1952 SEASON
Leading Goalscorer: Hyun Ki-Chang (Grimm) - 87 goals
League MVP: Hamish Hamilton (Ulbrich)

Marred with controversy involving the Angerer clash strip issue, the league initially pulled Angerer out of the broadcast deal. Knowing they would quickly lose revenue, the Bulls swiftly responded and released a clash guernsey, a white guernsey with a green V, with the club logo inside a green shield. The condition for the Bulls to be included in the television deal was to wear their clash guernsey at least three times. Angerer complied, wearing it in their first three away matches.

Grimm continued to go from strength to strength as the Reapers finished on top for the second consecutive year. Whilst they had an inferior percentage compared to last year, their record was identical, securing them a home final and the double chance. A narrow victory over Chavez in the last round ensured that they finished in pole position. Hyun Ki-Chang continued to dominate up front, scoring 87 goals for the season. At 35 years of age, he showed no signs of slowing down, including a bag of 10 against Angerer in round 6.

In Ulbrich, fans were getting excited. After a surprising 11-10 record the previous year, the Pilots were expected to fall. Instead, the opposite happened as the players gained in experience, with second year player Hamish Hamilton winning the MVP award. The Pilots entered the halfway mark 6-5, though only lost one match for the rest of the year to end up 14-6-1 in second spot, with the possibility of winning their first premiership only in their second season!

Angerer continued to contend at the top, earning a solid third place finish. The Bulls were solid throughout the year, and had the highest scoring total of all teams. Their young midfield continued to deliver a plethora of opportunities to their forwards, and forwards Choudhary and Hansen, continued to play well. Rookie forward Angelo Marino performed strongly, adding another reliable option to Angerer's strong forward stocks. In spite of this, losses in three of their last five games ensured they missed out on the double chance to finish 13-8.

The Bears had an inconsistent start in a competitive league, not winning more than two consecutive matches in the first half of the season. Stuart Arlington consistently played well in defence, though most of the team were hot and cold. It summed up the Xiong year, as they consistently hovered around mid-table. Fortunately for Xiong, the Bears never dropped below fifth after round 8, and actually took fourth spot in round 17 despite losing to Chavez. The Bears went on a roll to win three consecutive matches afterwards to secure fourth spot and a finals appearance.

The efforts of Willie Quinlan and Charles Jamison were superb in defence as the Bulldogs conceded the least amount of points throughout the season, though Richburg's shortcomings in attack let them down. The Bulldogs only scored above 100 points in three matches. The low scores were often caused by poor accuracy in front of goal, which resulted in costing them games. It proved to be the difference in missing out on a finals berth after a miraculous late-season recovery last year. A late collapse added insult to injury after a 7-4 start.

Many tipped Chavez to return to prominence. 1952 was not to be their year as their defensive stars suffered injuries. John McMahon at 34 suffered a hamstring injury, which placed him on the sidelines. His presence was sorely missed, as the Nationals often conceded scores over 100 points without him. His return in round 17 led the Nationals to three consecutive wins, placing them within striking distance of a finals spot. A loss to an out-of-form Day in round 20 ultimately sealed their fate, and inaccuracy in front of goal added insult to injury. The Nationals ended the season in sixth place.

Given the weakening talent of the Day side, the Knights seemed to be a shadow of their past selves. The Knights consistently struggled, only winning twice on the road, and were often adrift of a finals position. Wally Trow seemed to be a shadow of his past self, as he was no longer influencing games compared to a few years ago. A bright spot was the strong prowess of Matej Vidmar up front. He kicked 83 goals for the year, placing him second in the leading goalscorer tally.

Expectations for Ruddy were low, and again they finished on the bottom. On the other hand, lopsided losses became less common, but the players' inexperience struggled to win them crucial games. That being said, the Longhorns increased their win total to five wins, including a surprise away victory over Grimm. William Clay's tutelage of his teammates proved to be beneficial as the players increased in confidence and performance levels. The Longhorns won consecutive games for the first time in history, though was not enough for them to even remotely leave last place.

To be honest, I can't see the Bulls going away from the green anytime soon. Green is synonymous with the club that they would wear it in all home matches.

Re: Gorania Football League

FINALS MATCHES

1ST SEMI FINAL
ANGERER VS. XIONG
AT PRASAD PARK
13 SEPTEMBER 1952 - 2:10PM

Xiong, sneaking in with a .500 record, faced a daunting task against a composed Angerer outfit, who led the league in attack. Many pundits expected the Bulls to make quick work of the Bears. New recruit Angelo Marino of Angerer proved to be a useful forward option, creating more damage up front. Prasad Park was decked out in green and white, as both sides wore their primary outfits. Some fans from Xiong braved the mountainous trek to Angerer, where the elevation was expected to play a role.

Angerer had the lion's share of the possession in the first quarter, but were unable to capitalise on their dominance. Xiong on the other hand, defended fiercely, with Stuart Arlington strong against the potent Angerer forward line, limiting them to two goals. Meanwhile, the Bears responded with four consecutive goals to end the quarter, earning them a surprise seven point lead at the first change.

QT - Xiong 2.5 (17), Angerer 4.0 (24)

Rain started to pour during the second stanza and both teams subsequently struggled to handle the conditions. Whilst the higher elevation increased the kicking distance, both sides struggled to get clean hands on the footy. As a result, both sides only managed a measly one goal each in the second quarter. The margin remained the same at the long break.

HT - Angerer 3.7 (25), Xiong 5.2 (32)

The rain stopped during the half-time break, and whilst there was some dew on the grass, both sides handled the ball more cleanly. Meanwhile, the Xiong midfield went up a gear as they piled on four consecutive goals, and subsequently afterwards three of the next five. Fans in Angerer were shellshocked with the Bulls' third quarter deficit. What was expected to be an easy win turned to be a difficult deficit to face. Up front, James Iverson scored four goals to lift the Bears to what appeared to be a match winning 35 point lead.

3QT - Angerer 5.11 (41), Xiong 12.4 (76)

The Bulls knew they had a large deficit to face, and given their insipid attacking display, coupled with Stuart Arlington's strong prowess in defence, it was an uphill battle. The Bulls got off to the worst possible start in the fourth quarter as James Iverson booted his seventh goal for the match to extend the buffer to 41 points. Desperately down, Angerer needed to find a spark. The Bulls went all out attack, hoping for the best. Suddenly, the ball often became locked in their forward line. Angerer managed to score the next three goals, but there was little time remaining, with the scores at 13.6 to 8.14 in Xiong's favour. Still, fans in Angerer believed with the momentum they have had, scoring the next goal would give them a sniff for a preliminary final berth. It was not to be as a blunder from Samuel Wheaton led to a turnover, which resulted in a coast-to-coast goal for the Bears. Angerer scored two late consolation goals, as Xiong advanced to play the loser of Grimm and Ulbrich the following fortnight.

FT - Angerer 10.14 (74), Xiong 14.7 (91)

2ND SEMI FINAL
GRIMM VS. ULBRICH
AT TATFELD OVAL
20 SEPTEMBER 1952 - 2:10PM

Grimm, being the defending champions, were determined to go back-to-back, while Ulbrich, who surprised everyone with second spot in their second season, hoped to win their inaugural premiership. Given it was a Grimm home game, many predicted a comfortable win for the Reapers. In spite of this, many fans from Ulbrich came down to Grimm to watch their Pilots play, while hundreds of thousands of people tuned into the match on GBC (the national television station).

It was suddenly clear that experience in finals matches proved a point. Ulbrich players were completely inefficient with their possessions, allowing Grimm to dominate. MVP Hamish Hamilton struggled to get his hands on the ball as he made minimal impact. Nerves got the better of the Pilots as Grimm piled on six goals for the quarter, to hold a 41 point lead at quarter-time. Hyun managed two goals, as the fans in Grimm roared.

QT - Grimm 6.6 (42), Ulbrich 0.1 (1)

Things gradually got uglier for Ulbrich as the Reapers continued to dominate possession, scoring the next three goals. With the scores 9.7 to 0.1, the match was well and truly over. Ulbrich, with a solitary behind to their name, finally managed to create a clear goal scoring opportunity halfway into the second quarter. Travis Yeoman duly converted to give the Pilots their first goal. While the Pilots finally scored a goal, and managed to score a second, the Reapers were well and truly in control. Hyun's four goal haul, aided with more efficient possession, led the Reapers to a well deserved 68 point lead at half-time.

HT - Grimm 12.11 (83), Ulbrich 2.3 (15)

Knowing the game was well and truly over, Grimm turned down the heat. This resulted in a much more even third quarter, with minimal change to the margin. Hyun had five at three-quarter time for Grimm, while Yeoman scored all four of Ulbrich's goals in the quarter to bring his total to five.

3QT - Grimm 16.12 (108), Ulbrich 6.3 (39)

Both sides played a more casual style in the final quarter to prevent injuries heading into their following matches. Hyun scored three more for a total haul of eight goals as Grimm cruised to a 79 point victory. Yeoman finished the match with six, the only bright spot in a dirty day for Ulbrich. The Reapers, if they weren't clear favourites to win the GFL at the start of the finals series, they clearly had one hand on the trophy!

FT - Grimm 21.15 (141), Ulbrich 9.8 (62)

PRELIMINARY FINAL
ULBRICH VS. XIONG
AT BADGER PARK
SATURDAY 20 SEPTEMBER 1952 - 2:10PM

Despite the shellacking the Pilots suffered the previous week, they were determined to make amends. They were facing a rejuvenated Xiong team, with the Bears victorious in four of their previous five matches. Due to a clash, Xiong were dressed in their unpopular crossed sash design, causing many commentators to describe the uniform as hideous. Whilst the Pilots finished higher on the ladder, many experts believed Ulbrich were not ready for finals football, with most predicting Xiong to win.

Both sides constantly attacked in the first quarter, with the quarter being goal for goal. Xiong drew first blood, and Ulbrich immediately scored afterwards. It followed like a chain, and the quarter finished with Xiong ahead by a solitary goal.

QT - Ulbrich 5.3 (33), Xiong 6.3 (39)

Many in Badger Park felt like the goal fest was going to stop anytime soon. Instead, both sides continued to go goal for goal, with Ulbrich scoring first from 31 year old Travis Yeoman. The chain continued, and suddenly both sides were at 10 goals apiece with two minutes remaining in the half. Yeoman had three for Ulbrich, while Quinton Green had four for Xiong at this point. The scores read 66-63 in Ulbrich's favour. The trend finally broke when Sean Kim gave away a free kick, in which Paul Bernard found Paul Christodoulou 35 metres (38 yards) out from goal directly in front. Christodoulou duly converted to give Ulbrich a nine point buffer at half time.

HT - Ulbrich 11.6 (72), Xiong 10.3 (63)

Given the trend was broken, many felt Ulbrich would run away with the contest. This was not to be as Xiong started the third quarter in fine form, as the Bears piled on the first three goals to go ten points up. Ulbrich did not relent, and wrestled back the lead before Harsh Parekh scoring a long 45 metre (49 yard) goal to restore the lead back in Xiong's favour. Both sides added a goal each to their score by the conclusion of the quarter, with what was to be an exciting game for the ages.

3QT - Ulbrich 14.11 (95), Xiong 15.8 (98)

Both sides knew their seasons were on the line, so all out attack was a priority for both sides. Xiong scored two of the first three goals of the quarter to go nine points ahead; the scores reading 110-101. Afterwards, a strong tackle by veteran Rocco Ferrari on Harsh Parekh, who was playing strongly in midfield, ended up with a shoulder injury. Parekh was off the ground, and it immediately changed the game. Ulbrich started to dominate the midfield, as Parekh's presence was sorely missed. Despite Arlington's best efforts to limit the damage, Ulbrich's repeat entries to their forward line enabled them to dominate and run away with the contest. Yeoman scored to reduce the deficit to three, and immediately afterwards, Christodoulou brought the lead to Ulbrich. The Pilots never lost the lead from there, as they ran to a 19 point victory to book a grand final berth.

FT - Ulbrich 19.16 (130), Xiong 17.9 (111)
