Re: History of the National Football Association - 1974-75 Season

1972-73 Semifinals

1972-73 NFA Semifinals - Los Angeles Tigers at Pittsburgh Ironmen

Pittsburgh got here last year, and were minutes away from breaking their 9 year Champions Bowl appearance drought, which would give them a chance to break their 19 year Champions Bowl victory drought, which is the second longest in the NFA. This year they have the same chance, on the 20th anniversary of their last Champions Bowl winning season. However, fate would have it another way. Their opponents, the Tigers have the longest championship drought, winning one all the way 21 years ago, and losing in each of 4 next appearances. They’d get their fifth chance to make that magic happen again. They’d get out to an early 10-0 lead and never look back. Pittsburgh would make a run in the third, to cut into the 17-6 lead the Tigers had, but wouldn’t be able to catch up. QB Patrick James would throw another 2 touchdowns in the fourth quarter to quench any comeback embers Pittsburgh was trying to light and send the Tigers to their 4th Champions Bowl in the past 10 years. Pittsburgh would fall short as the 1 seed for a second year in a row, this time by a score of 31-13

1972-73 NFA Semifinals - Colorado Cougars at Houston Explorers
Coming into this game, many thought Colorado was the better team, and predicted them to win despite being the road team and being on the road. They’re hot and coming off 3 straight impressive wins over Los Angeles, Milwaukee and then Texas last week. Whereas Houston barely got by Cincinnati and New York in weeks 14 and 15, but to their credit, did handle the Whales shockingly well last round. Unfortunately though, this game would go much more similar to those week 14 and 15 games rather than like last week. The first half would be close, with each team exchanging blows. Houston would briefly lead 10-7 at the end of the first quarter, but failed to score in the second, letting the Cougars go into half with a lead. Colorado would actually force a safety almost as time expired thanks to a well placed punt that left the Explorers within their 10 yard line. This was followed up with a forced fumble on RB Ollie Smith, which ended up in the endzone after slipping out of 3 players arms. So in a crazy fashion, the Cougars get the rare last second safety, putting them on top 16-10. Houston would once again take a brief lead early in the third when RB Ollie Smith avenged his fumble and put them up 17-16. But it didn’t last long. QB Lloyd Brown would take Colorado back down the field and they’d hit a lead stealing field goal. Houston would stop Colorado from scoring most of the second half, but wouldn’t take advantage of it. The final score was 22-17.

C&C Appreciated! It was a quick turn around, I'll have the Champions Bowl up within the next few days too, knock on wood.

Props to LA, it might finally be their year. Beating the defending champ and the #1 seed is impressive.

Those two cats don’t look very happy with each other. I like even more that Colorados logo looks like it is gazing up at LAs logo in the graphic.

Excellent!  The Tigers vs. the Cougars is a fun matchup to see.  I've got Los Angeles here, but Colorado would be a very nice pleasant surprise to see victorious!

Let the Kitty Bowl begin!

It's a very nice coincidence!

Well, it's going to be a great game between two great offenses. Both teams would be very deserving of a win. Although there seems to be a lot riding on the Cougs in this one. Lloyd Brown in particular. Having a black quarterback start in the Champions Bowl really starts to make people forget that the NFA took in 4 teams from the racist SFL just 5 years ago. Not to mention just finally erasing that nightmare from everybody's minds in general, even if the circumstances aren't still the best for black americans in the country at the time. If Colorado wins, Brown becomes the first starting black quarterback to win the game, which would only add to his accolades.

1972-73 NFA Champions Bowl - Los Angeles Tigers vs Colorado Cougars

For the second year in a row we’d have a matchup of two expansion teams, which is only the 3rd time this kind of matchup has happened in NFA history. Unlike last year’s game, this matchup was competitive out of the gate. Both teams would score on their first drives and both defenses would step up to the occasion and force a turnover following said score. The Tigers had already had a game similar to this in the quarterfinals against Miami, and seemingly didn’t want to have to go through that again. They’d turn it on in the second quarter putting up an unanswered 17 points going into the half, thanks in part to a second interception, this one a pick six, and a 3 and out on Colorado’s next drive. But Colorado wasn’t done with. Coming out of the gates, QB Lloyd Brown, who was visibly upset with himself in the first half, played perfectly and responded to the run made by LA to finish the half, with a 14-0 run themselves in the third. As we headed into the 4th, the Tigers narrowly led, 24-21. But Colorado was already going, and the Tigers had left it all out on the field in the first. The Cougars would continue to score, taking their first lead since the first quarter. LA could only manage a 3 in return. By the 3 minute mark, the Cougs 14-0 run had turned into a 24-3 run. LA was stunned. The Tigers who’d led by 17 at half, were now down by 4. They had one remaining chance. This was the best opportunity they had to do something no Tigers team had been able to do since 1951 and of all people who was captaining the ship was QB Patrick James. But just as fate had shown the Ironmen that not every story has a happy ending, the Tigers would have their drive quickly sniffed out by an improving Cougars defense that had shown incredible growth over the course of the postseason. QB Lloyd Brown, the first black quarterback to be drafted in the first round, the first black quarterback to win the MVP, the first black quarterback to start a Champions Bowl, was now the first black quarterback to win the Champions Bowl. The Cougars would win the rightly nicknamed "Kitty Bowl" 31-27, becoming the 11th different team to win it all. QB Lloyd Brown would take home the Champions Bowl MVP.

C&C Appreciated! Thanks for all the comments! Get ready for an exciting offseason!
