1959 Kellogg Cup Playoffs, Second Round
Hibbing Greyhounds 4
Superior Lakers 1
Polich and his Hounds ran away with this one from the beginning. Hibbing had a commanding 3-0 lead after the first period and although the Lakers looked better as the game went on, they were unable to come back.
Virginia Royals 2 4OT
Rochester Mustangs 1
This 8 vs 9 seed match up lived up to the hype, the Royals and Stangs were very evenly matched all game, with neither team making any mistakes. The four overtime thriller went on for 134 minutes and 51 seconds, setting a new MAHL record. The marathon game finally ended when Virginia's Louis Nelson finally got the better of the Rochester net minder with a nifty backhand.
St. Cloud Bearcats 3
Steinbach Barbarians 4
The first big upset of the second round came when the Barbarians came to St. Cloud and added another tally to the Bearcats years of playoff ineptitude. Despite a good offensive game by the Cats, Steinbach was just too much for them to handle. After the game, Bearcats captain and 2x Tschida Trophy winner Kurt Schmidt stayed on the bench alone for a few minutes before finally heading to the locker room. Rumors are swirling that this may have been the last time he'll don the black and silver as his play has gone down hill due to aging.
International Falls Ice 2
Brainerd Lumberjacks 0
The Ice continue to show the league just how difficult it is to win at Smokey Bear Park. The rowdy, scarf twirling, made it their mission to get into the head of Jacks goalie Dand Polley and it worked. International Falls went on to shut out Brainerd and advance to the Great Eight.
Thunder Bay Giants 1
Edina Cake Eaters 2
In one of the biggest upsets in MAHL History, the Edina Cake Eaters knocked off the second seeded Thunder Bay Giants 2-1. Nobody expected Edina to compete with the defensive juggernauts from the shores of Superior. So when they jumped out to a 2 goal lead midway through the second, the home crowd was dead silent. The Giants made a good attempt at coming back late in the third, but were unable to get the game tying goal, thus ending their season much sooner than they had hoped.
Duluth Voyageurs 5
South St. Paul Mavericks 1
The Voyageurs came into this game as heavy favorites, and they lived up to the hype. Johansson was unable to get his Mavs past Duluth despite netting a goal. Le Bleus just were the better team from the drop of the puck to the final horn.
Roseau Stars 1
Thief River Falls Railers 2 OT
ALL ABOARD! The Railers stunned the Northland and the rest of the MAHL when they knocked off their league rivals from Roseau. The Stars were heavy favorites heading into this series having won all 4 of their regular season meetings. Much like in the knockout round, the Railers forced overtime. A couple minutes into OT, Roseau's Elias Ness was called for unsportsmanlike conduct after swearing at a linesman for an offsides call he disagreed with. One man up, the Railers set up their powerplay, firing everything on net. A shot was fired from the point into traffic, causing the puck to bounce and change direction off of the bodies in front and past the Roseau goalie to send the Railers in the Great Eight.
Minneapolis Millers 1
St. Paul Victorias 3
The oldest rivalry in the state was on display as the V's and Millers did battle at Minneapolis Arena in front of over 6,000 fans. There was no love lost between these two bitter rivals, if you're a fan of physical hockey you would have loved this game. Both teams are known for their defenses so it was no surprise that the game was low scoring, but what was surprising was how physical both teas were, what the game lacked in goals it made up for in hits and penalties. The game was tied at one apiece after 2, but the V's took the lead early in the third and finished it off with an empty netter.
Who are you pulling for? Who do you think will advance? Let me know!

My two favorite remaining teams have to play each other in the Barbarians and Ice.

1959 Kellogg Cup Playoffs, Great Eight
Hibbing Greyhounds 1
Virginia Royals 3
The Greyhounds three-pete dreams have been crushed as the Virginia Royals pull off the upset. Hibbing had a 1-0 lead going into the third period, but Virginia's Nelson tied things up a couple minutes in and then scored the go ahead goal 32 seconds later. In a last ditch effort, the Hounds pulled their goalie but the puck was turned over in the neutral zone and taken in by the Royals who put it in the empty net to solidify the win.
International Falls Ice 3 OT
Steinbach Barbarians 2
Two of the northernmost teams in the league did battle in one of the toughest places to play, Smokey Bear Park Rink. The crowd was rowdy as ever and helped the Ice jump out to an early 2-0 lead. The lead was cut in half before the end of the first thanks to Irvine "Irv" Krentz. The second period was slow and physical, and the score remained 2-1 International Falls. The Barbarians were given a golden opportunity midway through the third when the Ice were called for too many men on the ice. Steinbach would capitalize on the chance and force overtime. The atmosphere was electric when the puck dropped for the overtime period, the fans spun their scarves, seemingly adding to the bitter wind chill. The hometown crowd was sent into an even bigger frenzy when their veteran captain Willy Mason passed the puck off the boards, past the pinching defensemen to himself for a breakaway. He deked left before going to his backhand and tucking the puck just between the Barbarian goaltenders skate and the pipe to win the game for his Ice.
Duluth Voyageurs 2
Edina Cake Eaters 0
The Voyageurs seemed to have learned from their rivals errors last round as they shut out the Edina Cake Eaters. Le Bleus shut down Edina's quick breakouts, pinning them in their zone for most of the game and tiring them out early.
St. Paul Victorias 5
Thief River Falls Railers 0
The Railers playoff push was abruptly ended by the Victorias who lit up the back of the net all game long. The nearly 7,500 screaming fans that packed the St. Paul Auditorium seemed to have gotten the better of the small town kids as they just didn't seem to be able to focus on the game at hand.

Ice vs. Voyageurs for the Championship!

I'm pulling hard for the Voyageurs, I didn't want to comment because they've been an early out lately and the cause of much disappointment but they seem more determined this year. The Victorias are also playing well though. I predict a very close affair while the Ice freeze out the Royals.

Is this NCAA March Madness? Because a team with blue is going to win it this year. Go V's!

1959 Kellogg Cup Playoffs, Semi Finals
International Falls Ice 2
Virginia Royals 0
The atmosphere was electric at puck drop. Both teams came out fast with offensive chances, but neither could capitalize. The first period ended scoreless, but the Ice broke through midway through the second thanks to a rocket from Backes. International Falls would score another before the period ended and held the lead and the shut out as they advance to the Final.
Duluth Voyageurs 1
St. Paul Victorias 0
A defensive battle, both teams played very carefully not giving their opponents any breaks. The hometown crowd was loud in their support of Le Bleus, giving them a little extra jump in their step. The Voyageurs eventually got on the board thanks to a great deflection in front of the net by Colton Hill. Hill's goal would prove to be the game winner as they held St. Paul off the scoreboard to advance to their first Kellogg Cup Final in 22 years!
Will the Ice clinch the cup on home ice? Or will the Voyageurs win their first title in nearly 30 years?

The Ice at home? Shut it down, they've got this.
