Dan O'Mac's Super Series Playdowns Predictions:
Red Wing against Northfield will be a tough game, as these two teams know each other well. This will be heated, and will come down to the wire. I've got the Outlaws beating the Chiefs in this one.
Virginia against Burnsville is the historic Royals team against the Cinderella Bucks. I want to see the Bucks keep rolling, but the Royals are going to be just too tough.
We get a couple teams from the north in Coleraine and Duluth. Although the Voyageurs are a good team, I don't see them beating the Trout.
And my true upset of the round will happen in the Minnetonka versus Austin matchup. Minnetonka is good, but the jitters of playing on the big stage are going to get to them here, and the Mavericks will upset the Muskies.

1978 Kellogg Cup Super Series Playdowns
Red Wing Chiefs vs Northfield Outlaws
Two bitter Valley Hockey League rivals both making their Super Series debuts. Northfield struck first, holding a one goal lead for most of the game. Red Wing would finally tie things up after over a minute and a half of bombarding the Outlaw goalie with shot after shot. The horn rang out at Met Center to send us to overtime in the opening game of the 78 Super Series. A quarter of the period had passed before the first scoring chance occurred. Red Wing had a mishap that led to an intercepted pass that set Northfield off on a 2 on 1 chance. The defender took away the pass, leaving his goalie one on one with the Outlaw center. The Chief goalie lunged out to poke check the puck once the Outlaw was in close enough, but right as the goalie did so the Northfield player put the puck on his backhand and tucked it around the goalie and into the net. Northfield floundered over the boards in elation, knocking off their biggest rivals in the Super Series with a 2-1 overtime win.
Virginia Royals vs Burnsville Bucks
Virginia feels like they are capable of bringing the Cup back home after a now 40 year hiatus, but to do so they must first get past the Cinderella Seed from Burnsville. After a scoreless first, the Bucks struck first in the second, but Virginia unloaded 3 goals in under 2 minutes near the end of the period to take a 3-1 lead into the third. The Bucks made it a one goal game just 2:06 into the third, beating the Royal goalie over the shoulder. Burnsville had the crowd on their side as well as the momentum after getting to within one. Virginia was on their heels, forced to ice the puck multiple times just to get a breather. The Royals were able to hold off the Bucks onslaught, standing their ground and maintaining their 1 goal lead. The Bucks pulled their goalie with just over a minute left in a desperate attempt at tying the game up. A shot from the point was pushed to the corner and picked up by Virginia who broke out and buried it in the empty cage to secure a 4-2 win to send them to the Great Eight.
Coleraine Trout vs Duluth Voyageurs
Fans from the cities love watching northern teams play for the much tougher, higher hitting style of hockey, and the 15,000 in attendance for this one were treated to about as textbook a "Northern Game" as they come. It was a very low offensive game with most of the competition happening along the boards and in center ice. Bone crushing hits were being delivered by both teams, but neither could seem to get on the scoreboard. Duluth finally got the goose eggs off the board on a fluke shot from the point that the Trout goalie didn't see coming, slipping right past him and in the net to put the Voyageurs up 1-0. It was such a low scoring game that that fluke of a goal would be the golden ticket to send le bleus to the Great Eight, shutting out Coleraine 1-0.
Minnetonka Muskies vs Austin Mavericks
Austin didn't look as slow as some had feared against the speedy Muskies from Minnetonka. It was actually a very even hockey game with neither side really taking over the game at any given point. That being said, there were still scoring chances unlike the game right before. We were tied at 3 as the final horn sounded to send us to overtime for the second time in the day. The Muskies and Mavericks went back and forth for over ten minutes and there was still no winner. Minnetonka finally put a stop to things by smacking at a loose puck in the slot, firing it under the arm of the Maverick goalie to send the Muskies to the Great Eight with a 4-3 overtime win.

Great Eight Preview
Edina Cake Eaters vs Northfield Outlaws
The unanimous top ranked team in the MAHL, Edina, looks to keep their quest for Cup number one going. Meanwhile Northfield is coming off of their biggest win in team history, knocking out their arch rival, it will be interesting to see if that momentum carries over to this game where they are major underdogs. Will the "Two Headed Dragon" lead Edina to their 6th Semi Final appearance? Or will Northfield ride their wave of momentum to victory?
White Bear Lake Braves vs Virginia Royals
Arguably the best matchup of the Great Eight sees East Metro powerhouse White Bear Lake take on the Iron Range Champions from Virginia. This one could honestly go either way, I would not be surprised to see this one go to overtime as both teams are just so solid on both sides of the puck. Will the Braves speed lead them to their first Semi Final birth? Or will Virginia's size be too much for White Bear to handle?
West St. Paul Waves vs Duluth Voyageurs
West St. Paul is coming into this game as a very dangerous threat to win it all. Despite a close one against their rivals from Highland Park to get here, the Waves are a team that has shown all year long that they have what it takes to win. On the other side of things are the Duluth Voyageurs who are on an incredible playoff run. After finishing 4th in the LSHL, le bleus were overlooked by many, but the Voyageurs are still a very good hockey team and they have proved that by making it as far as they have. Will West St. Paul live up to the hype? Or will Duluth keep proving the doubters wrong?
Grand Forks Jets vs Minnetonka Muskies
Another one that could realistically go either way. Grand Forks has the advantage in many peoples minds, in fact the Jets are on track for an almost perfect season having won the Red River Hockey League, both rivalry trophies, and reached the Super Series, all that is left is the bring the Kellogg Cup to North Dakota. Standing in the way of that are the Muskies who are coming off a thrilling overtime win against Austin. All eyes will be on how much the extra hockey the day before will effect Tonka. Will the Jets keep their dream season going? Or will Minnetonka hook themselves a victory?

Dan O'Mac's Super Series Great Eight Predictions:
The Cake Eaters are in the familiar position of needed just three wins to bring home the Kellogg Cup for the first time. It's hard for me to pick Edina after their many collapses, but the Outlaws just won't have enough, and will fall to the Cake Eaters.
The Braves and Royals are going to matchup in an exciting matchup between two teams with very different styles. I'm going to for the speed in this one, as the Braves take down the Royals to set up one all-metro semifinal.
The Waves and the Voyageurs is the matchup I'm most into. The Waves are sending their best team in years to the Super Series, and will have had some time to rest after that close match with the Flying Aces. The Voyageurs are coming off a game where they were physically beaten up by the Trout. The rest and recovery gives West St. Paul the edge, and they move on as well.
My upset pick of the round is the Muskies taking down the Jets. The Muskies make it an all Metro final four.

The Outlaws are looking scarier than the in-laws. Yeesh.

1978 Kellogg Cup Super Series Great Eight
Edina Cake Eaters vs Northfield Outlaws
The opening game of the day saw the top seeded Cake Eaters back at Met Center for what seems like a yearly occurrence. Northfield came out of the gates with a spring in their step, but a quick goal from Nanne changed the feel of the game for the remainder. The Outlaws hung on, keeping the damage to just one after one despite being outshot 16-5. The Cake Eaters came out for the second with a new game plan, opting to set up in the offensive zone as though they were running a powerplay, passing it along the outside, keeping Northfield pinned in their zone for long periods of time. Edina didn't get many scoring chances in the second, but the damage had been done as the Outlaws came out for the third noticeably slower. Going to overtime the day before did not do Northfield any favors as the Eaters began to close in, smelling blood in the water. Northfield was lucky that their goalie was playing out of his mind, stopping 39 of 41 shots on the night, but he was not invincible as the Cake Eaters score a second to take a 2-0 lead that they held until the final horn to advance to the semi finals.
White Bear Lake Braves vs Virginia Royals
There are just some days that everything you do just works. This was one of those days for the Virginia Royals who were firing on all cylinders as they light up the Braves with 4 goals in the first 2 periods of the game to all but secure the win with 20 minutes still to play. White Bear finally got a shot past the Royals goalie to make it a game again, but Virginia scored a short handed goal to regain their 4 goal cushion. White Bear scored a second goal with just over a minute left, but it was for nothing as Virginia advances to the semi finals with a 5-2 win.
West St. Paul Waves vs Duluth Voyageurs
The incredible playoff run of the Duluth Voyageurs continues as they take down the second seeded Waves in overtime. WSP got the scoring started in the first, holding that lead until Duluth tied it up in the third. Le Bleus put home another a few minutes later to actually take the lead with just over 10 minutes to go. West St. Paul dug in and managed to get to a loose puck in the slot, smacking it into the back of the net to tie the game at 2. The final horn sounded to send us to overtime in Bloomington. Duluth carried the puck into the Waves zone. The puck carrier dropped into the corner and bounced a pass off the boards behind the net to his teammate who caught it and immediately put it to his forehand for a point blank shot. The goalie dropped, but the puck squeaked between his legs and into the net. The Voyageurs bench went crazy as they hopped the boards to mob their teammate, Duluth is heading to the semi finals.
Grand Forks Jets vs Minnetonka Muskies
Tonka wasted no time getting the final game of the night started, beating the Jets goalie on the first shot of the game to put the Muskies up early. Grand Forks regrouped though, tightening up on defense and scoring two to lead after one period of play. Things got a little chippy in the second after a couple of huge hits along the boards that Minnetonka thought were penalties. It seemed that there was a scrum of some sort after every whistle, it eventually began to settle down after the refs finally began to call penalties. The third was the period that changed everything. It was pretty even for the first few minutes of the period, but once the Muskies tied the game on the powerplay, it was all over. Tonka became a team possessed, completely shutting down the Jets, stopping them from being able to get anything going whatsoever. The Muskies took back the lead with a snipe into the top corner of the net. They didn't stop there though, finding a man in the slot for a tap in to put them up by two. Met Center was electric with the majority Minnesotan crowd all the more happy to see a team from ND losing. Minnetonka continued to put the kibosh on any and all Grand Forks chances, holding on to knock out the Jets by a final score of 4-2.
