Football World Championship 1914

Milwaukee was the host of the 1914 Football World Championship, with the Blatz Platz of the USA champion Brewmasters and Borchert Field of their rivals, Cream City FC, being used for the event.  The Brewmasters opened the event with a 4-2 victory over HVV of the Netherlands.  After MTK Budapest of Hungary drew against HVV, the Brewmasters only needed a draw against the Hungarians to advance.  The locals started off poorly and fell behind 2-0, but two goals in the last 15 minutes secured the draw and the top spot in Group A.  The other group winners were Olympique Lillois of France, Aarau of Switzerland, and Blackburn Rovers of England.

The Brewmasters were pitted against Olympique Lillois in the first semifinal.  The French squad were too fast for the locals and claimed a 2-1 victory.  In the other semifinal, Blackburn Rovers snatched a 2-1 victory over Aarau.
In the final, Blackburn Rovers were in fine form as the dominated the length and width of the Blatz Platz.  The French speed was no match for the English elegance on the pitch, and Blackburn danced their way to a resounding 4-1 triumph.

AAFL President Irwin noted that there would be two new derby trophy competitions during the 1914-1915.  “The first new derby will be between the two clubs from the Motor City – Detroit Longtails and Detroit United Albions will contest for the Driver’s Seat.”



Continuing, Irwin explained, “The second will be our first cross-county trophy.  As the Bethlehem Steelworkers and the San Francisco Seahunters are owned by the same company, it was only natural for a trophy to be established.  The Steelworkers and Seahunters will compete for the Champion Ship.”

“Speaking of cross-country,” AFA President Harold stepped up to the podium, “the American Football Association Cup will be stretching across the country now.  Teams from the Western and Southern Regional Divisions will now join the competition.  The competition will now be arranged on a regional basis.  Sixteen squads will compete in the West and South, while the top thirty-two will enter in the East and Midwest.   The final will now home-and-home series between the two finalists.  We expect great things with the new format.  As we get more teams in the West and South, those regions will expand to thirty-two entrants as well.  Who knows, perhaps one day we will expand to even larger brackets.”


 

Ultimate Division 1914-1915 Midyear

At the end of the fall portion of the 1914-1915, Old Nassau 1869 topped the table by a single point over a surprising Cleveland Forest.  Philadelphia Sports Club was right in the hunt as well, defying preseason expectations.  The defending champions, Milwaukee Brewmasters, were at the middle of the table in the 11th spot.  The four promoted clubs – Indianapolis Speedsters, Brooklyn Bridegrooms, Boston Shipwrights, and Richmond Railers – were all the bottom half of the table, with Richmond in a relegation spot.
