Late Summer/Early Fall 1989

Excerpt from SportsCenter; August 11, 1989

Chris Berman: "While the teams and where they'll play have yet to be finalized, the World League, the NFL's international pet project, is already attracting potential television partners."

Dan Patrick: "ESPN of course is in the running but our network has some extremely stiff competition. For instance, the USA Network, despite showing fewer sports in recent years outside of Tuesday Night Fights, has expressed interest in the league. Ted Turner has raised his hand as well. NBC is looking to the World League as a Plan B should their bid for the NBA contract prove unsuccessful. ABC wants in and so does Fox, despite the latter being only two and a half years old and having no previous sports coverage experience.

The first franchise to be granted were the London Monarchs, who will play their home games at Wembley Stadium.
