[Rumblings in Redux]

Oh hey. It's been 2.5 years? Time flies. Life also got crazy, dealing with family death, moving, marriage, new jobs, etc. I've done a lot of work on my other series in Torland since then but I've had a nagging wish in the back of my head for a project based in real life. (or mostly real life, as the case may be) The Redux fits that bill of fictional people set in a real world. If you're unfamiliar or have forgotten the series parameters (as I did), browse back through the first few pages to refresh. There's only a few posts to catch up on. I left off revealing the inaugural teams, so we will continue that here. You guys submitted lots of player prospects (more than 30 I believe) and there's plenty of room for more for the inaugural draft. I'm hoping for lots of community interaction and feedback on how things proceed, so I'm open to any ideas, storylines, or historical facts that could influence the series. I do have some overall goals and storylines I want to hit but a lot of this is still waiting to be seen how things develop naturally. I'm sure I've forgotten some of the ideas I had, so this is even more exciting to see what might happen in this what-if scenario. With that being said, let's get back to it!

[1972 WHA Inaugural Convention – Part Two – The Teams are Born ...continued]

We travel over to the great state of Texas and land in Houston.

A key franchise for the WHA's focus on bringing hockey to the Southern United States, Texas-based owner Buck Bernstein named his team the Houston Aeros and signed a 3-year deal with the Sam Houston Coliseum. The Coliseum seats 9,200 people but is in disarray and needs improvements. Bernstein announced he would be looking to upgrade as soon as possible. The team colors will be navy, teal, and white. The Aeros will play in the Caskey Division.

The Aeros will sport a wordmark logo featuring an arrow-A in a sans serif face on a navy jersey with a full-length teal yoke with a white border. The teal and white stripe motif will be followed with a heavy hem stripe on the jerseys, navy pants, and socks. The primary and TV numbers will follow the sans serif style and have a single outline. A unique feature of the jersey will be an upper-chest number on the left side. According to Bernstein, team captains will have a circle around the chest number. The road set will be inverted with white for navy and the numbers and letters filled with navy.

C&C always appreciated!

Up next: We head back to Canada

Wow, didn’t know this existed until now! Anyhow, the Aeros look very modern and yet very 70s. Great job!

Thanks! Modern 70s is exactly what I was going for!

Same. That's why it felt like a good time to resurrect the project!

We take a pitstop in Ontario.

Central figure in this endeavor and newly-named league vice president Grover Neville's franchise will be named the Ottawa Civics and play their home games at the quaint Ottawa Civic Centre which seats 9,500 people. Neville named the team after the arena. Neville signed an 8-year deal with the city. The Civics will wear red, black, and white. They will play in the Neville Division.

The Civics will sport a black primary sweater with red pants and black socks. The jersey will feature a shoulder yoke and thick triple-striping on the hem and angled stripes on the sleeves. The logo is a roundel meant to mimic a face-off dot filled with a half-and-half of primary colors and the team name encircled. The jersey numbers will have a drop shadow and the TV numbers will have a single stroke. The NOBs will be arched in a contrasting color.

C&C always appreciated!

Up next: We head to the 8th and final team

We now go to the final city!

The final franchise of the inaugural eight, owned by Bruno Poulin, was named the Winnipeg Ice Bears, somewhat to the dismay of some of the other owners who felt the name was too amateurish. The Ice Bears will play their home games at the Winnipeg Arena which seats approximately 10,100 people for ice hockey. Poulin only signed a 2-year deal with the arena due to being uneasy about the future success of the new league, but decided to go all-in on the identity which features a polar bear and will sport the colors of red, navy, and white.

The Ice Bears will sport navy primary jerseys with red pants. Mixed-width quad striping is featured throughout on the hems, sleeves, and socks. The away jersey will feature a shoulder yoke. The polar bear logo with a north star will adorn the fronts. The jersey and TV numbers are a classic slab with single strokes, while the NOBs will be flat.

C&C appreciated!

Up next: We fill out the league and get the party started

Here's a look at the whole fledgling league!

Who's your team? Or who will you support in these early days of an upstart rival?

Chicago Cougars all the way!  I really hope they can find a way to thrive, especially in case the Blackhawks can't seem to get over that playoff hump.

I hear a new minor league hockey team just started up in my hometown, but I don't think they're gonna last long (Who names a team after a refrigerator, anyway?)
