Ultimate Division 1912-1913
The ending of the 1912-1913 season was the closest ever in the Ultimate Division. Going into the fina weekend, the Philadelphia Libbies stood atop the table, ahead of the New York Fomorians and the recently promoted Boston Gaelics by 2 points. A draw in the Libbies’ game against the Milwaukee Brewmasters would secure the Libbies’ 2nd Ultimate Division title. However, the Brewmasters proved victorious at Blatz Platz, upending the Libbies 3-1. Across town, the Gaelics downed Cream City FC to pull even with the Libbies on points, although with a smaller goal difference.
Meanwhile, both the Fomorians and the Gaelics won, but it was Giovanni Gill’s late goal for the Fomorians in their victory over Baltimore Bannerets that proved crucial. That goal pushed the Fomorians into a tie with the Libbies on goal difference. However, the prolific Fomorian attack had rippled the nets more often, and goals for was the 2nd tiebreaker. With that, the Fomorians annexed their 2nd title.
While some Boston fans were dealing with the disappointment of the Gaelics near miss at taking the title, others in Beantown were bemoaning the poor season of the 4-time champion Shipwrights, who ended in the relegation zone. Joining the Shipwrights in demotion will be the Pittsburgh Privateers.
