Looks at bracket. "Oh, the Twin City.....err...St. Anthony Vulcans lost". ....... WHAT?!
I'm sure this isn't the first time a #1 overall seed lost in the first round, but considering the unpopular name change right before this season, it definitely feels like the name change cursed the team a bit. Might be time to go back to being the Twin City Vulcans after that embarrassment, lol!
Not to say the Chargers can't make a run Foxes style, but there's no reason the Vulcans should have lost this match without some sort of karma influence.

The Chargers stole a win and the seedings of the right side of the bracket.

Haha, there is definitely a portion of the team and fan base that thinks that the name change cursed them. I could see them potentially changing back if things don't go well the next year or two.

Thanks for pointing that out, it's been fixed

1977 Kellogg Cup Playoffs; First Round - South
Mankato Moose vs Burnsville Bucks
Much like the animals for which these two are named, the Moose were just bigger, stronger, and faster than the Bucks. Mankato thoroughly dominated this one, outshooting Burnsville 38-21 on their way to a 6-2 blowout win.
St. Peter Governors vs Luverne Flying Dutchmen
St. Peter got on the board first, but Luverne made it a much different game in the second and third as the Dutchmen worked together like a well oiled machine, passing tape to tape in high scoring areas and creating opportunities. St. Peter had no answer for the Clogs incredible team play, getting opened up on defense and allowing 3 unanswered goals against. Luverne walks away with their first playoff win in 6 years as they add another notch in the Governors history of playoff heartbreak, defeating St. Peter 3-1.
Austin Mavericks vs Owatonna Owls
This was a classic run and gun style hockey game as the Mavs and Owls flew back and forth with speed, both finding the back of the net on numerous occasions. Owatonna entered the third down 5-3 and the Owls put home a powerplay goal to make it a one goal game with just over 10 minutes to play. The Owls became relentless on offense, peppering the Austin goalie with shots. Austin gained control and went the other way, beating the goalie in below the blocker to extend Austin's lead back to 2. That would be the final goal of the game as the Mavericks would hold on to defeat Owatonna 6-4 in front of over 2,500 at Riverside Arena.
Apple Valley Cardinals vs Brookings Buffaloes
Apple Valley came ready to take care of business at home, scoring twice in the opening 5 minutes and once more in the first to take a commanding 3 goal lead over the Buffs. Brookings did manage to get on the board near the end of the second thanks to a 5 on 3 powerplay, but this one was all Cardinals as Apple Valley buried a rebound in the third to put this one away. The Cards advance with a convincing 4-1 victory.
Marshall Pheasants vs Hastings Rivermen
Marshall had no problems on the offensive side of things in this one, scoring a pair of goals in all three periods to blow out the Hastings Rivermen 6-1.
La Crosse Brewers vs Rochester Mustangs
One of the biggest rivalries in the VHL was on full display at Pettibone Lagoon as the Brewers and Mustangs went to war. As games between these two typically go, things were fairly chippy. The referees seemed content with letting the two battle it out, not calling penalties unless they were completely egregious. This only led to more animosity between the two as they cheap shotted one another due to lack of consequences. Despite the brutal physical play, scoring was still on display with both teams putting together some nifty plays leading to goals. When it was all said and done it was the visitors from Rochester who got the last laugh, upsetting the Brewers 5-3 to tie the all time playoff series between these two at one apiece.
Northfield Outlaws vs Sioux City Shockers
The VHL champs had a much tougher time with Sioux City than they had anticipated as the Shockers jumped out to a 2 goal lead on the road. Northfield would eventually settle things down and find their game once more, tying the game at 2 and forcing overtime. An Outlaw was called for tripping less than a minute into OT, giving the Shockers a powerplay opportunity. The resulting faceoff was won by the Outlaws who rang it around the boards, but it was held in by a City defenseman. The Shocker sent it across the blue line to his d partner who passed it to a winger breaking towards the slot who caught it and fired a quick shot on goal from the hash mark. The goalie was screened by his own defenseman and couldn't see the shot, resulting in it rippling the twine and sending Sioux City to the second round with a 3-2 overtime win.
Faribault Flickertails vs Shakopee Six
The feel good story that was the Shakopee's impressive turn around the past two seasons was quickly forgotten as the Six went to Faribault for their first playoff game only to get manhandled by the Flickertails. Nerves definitely payed a part in the collapse for Shakopee, as the inexperienced team looked lost and became visibly frustrated on the bench. The Six just fell apart after the Tails took a 2 goal lead early in the third, all but rolling over and dying as they allowed Faribault to do whatever they pleased for the remainder of the game, allowing 2 more goals against. The final horn sounded and the Flickertails advance with a 4-0 shutout win over the Six.

Dan O'Mac's Thoughts and Predictions for the Second Round:
North:
A lot of chalk in this one, with all the top seeds advancing... except those Little Falls Pilots. I'm going to make the call, the Pilots will go into Silver Bay and take down the Beavers in my North Upset of the Round.
Warroad and Brainerd are going to be in a tough matchup, and I expect this one to go to overtime.
I don't like the Giants as a Superior Lakers fan, so I've got to root for the Trout in that one.
The Redbirds will put down the Pointers, but the Pointers will put a scare into Eveleth.
Twin Cities:
The Vulcans go down to the Chargers, opening the door for the Militia or Chargers to claim what I believe to be their first Super Series berth. I'm going with the Militia in this one.
The Cake Eaters have to break through to win the big one in one of these years, right? I think they get past the Gunners by a pair of goals to continue that quest.
The Millers and the Retrievers is going to be good. The Millers are going to have seen what happened to the Vulcans, and aren't going to let their guard down, Millers head back to the Super Series.
Finally, my upset pick is the same as last round. The Warriors come out to play, and upset the Roosters.
South:
The Moose are loose? Can Mankato use it too? I don't know, but they're going to take down the Flying Dutchmen, and head to the Twin Cities as one of the final 12 teams.
Austin and Apple Valley are going to be playing a tough one, as the Mavericks look to shock the state again and win a championship. I don't see it happening though, and the Cardinals get into the Super Series.
The Mustangs beat the boys from Wisconsin, and get a matchup with the Marshall Pheasants. I'm going to go with the Pheasants in this one, but not before the Mustangs make it a challenge.
The final team to get into the Super Series is going to be the Shockers, as the shock the state with another upset, beating the Flickertails.

Even though it's likely better with the regional playoffs, travel for the SWHA teams must be tough. Brookings to Apple Valley and Sioux City to Hastings are both around four-hour trips one way. It must be the same for North Dakota teams heading to the North Shore or Canadian teams going to St. Cloud. Anyway, good job, Shockers. And, St. Peter, you performed as expected.

Yeah, travel can be tough for some teams depending on where they have to travel to. I do think that the Regions help with travel though, no more trips like Austin to International Falls which would have taken about 7-8 hours back in the day.
Also shout out to Dan for his predictions, I always enjoy hearing your thoughts!

Man, I would have killed for anything close to a 4 hour trip when I was growing up playing AAA in California. Couldn’t have anything less than 6. I bet they enjoy the roadies!

1977 Kellogg Cup Playoffs; Second Round - North
Coleraine Trout vs Thunder Bay Giants
After a slow first period that saw no goals for either side, the Giants came out strong in the second, putting home a pair of goals in the opening 5 minutes of the period. Coleraine would pull to within one before the period came to an end, beating the goalie low glove side. The Giants extended their lead to 3-1 7:22 into the third, battling at a loose puck in the slot over and over until it finally squeaked behind the Coleraine goalie and into the net. The Trout would not go quietly though, turning on the afterburners and blowing past a Giant defenseman to get an open shot on goal that he buried five hole to get the Trout back to within one. Coleraine was given one final opportunity late in the game when a Thunder Bay player got his stick tangled up in a Trouts skates, drawing a trip and giving Coleraine a powerplay with 1:49 to play. The Trout won the draw and their goalie booked it to the bench to get the extra attacker. Coleraine looked for an open shot, finally taking a shot from the point that was blocked by a Trout defender. The puck was gathered by the Brookie who flipped it down the ice towards the empty net. A Coleraine defenseman gave it his best effort to stop the puck from getting into the empty cage, diving at it, but it was too far for him to reach as it trickled across the goal line, sending Thunder Bay to the Super Series for the first time in 5 years.
Silver Bay Beavers vs Little Falls Pilots
It was looking like another upset was on our hands in Silver Bay as the Pilots jumped out to an early lead, outplaying the Beavs. Silver Bay tied it up in the final minute of the period to take momentum into the second which they used to turn the game on its head. The second period was all Beavers as Silver Bay peppered the Pilots goalie with 21 shots, scoring on 4 of them, to take a commanding 5-1 lead with 20 minutes to play. All Silver Bay really needed to do in the third was play solid defensive hockey, they didn't need to make any risks and they didn't need any more goals. Little Falls gave it their all, but Silver Bay kept dumping the puck in deep once crossing the red line to keep the clock ticking. The Pilots got on the board with a point blast midway through the period, but that would be all they could muster as the Beavers punch their ticket to the Super Series for the first time, beating Little Falls 5-2.
Warroad Lakers vs Brainerd Lumberjacks
Hockey is a game of three periods, even if you dominate two, one bad period can make all of your efforts void. That is exactly what happened in Warroad. The Lakers were looking well on their way to a sixth Super Series, up 3-0 over the Jacks with only 20 minutes left to go. Then disaster struck. Warroad seemed almost lackadaisical out on the ice, almost as if they had already won. The Lumberjacks meanwhile were hungry and desperate to keep their season going. The Lumberjacks got on the board about 5 minutes in, but the Lakers didn't seem to care much still up 2 goals. That was when the tides turned and Brainerd began to take control. The Lumberjacks were flying out there, finding open men in high scoring areas for deflections and one timers. Before long the dam began to break on the Lakers as shots began to slip through the cracks, with the score quickly going from 3-1 to 3-3 in a 2 minute span. With the score now tied, reality began to set in for Warroad as the Lumberjacks now controlled all the momentum and were not letting up on attack. It was beginning to look like overtime was going to be needed as we got to the final minute of play in regulation. The Lumberjacks broke out of their zone with speed 3 on 2. The puck was dropped for a winger at the top of the circle. The Laker defenseman stepped up on the winger who ripped a quick shot through the defenders legs towards goal. The shot was lost behind the Warroad player and the Jacks charging towards goal. The Laker goalie didn't even know the shot had been taken as the puck blew past his left leg into the back of the net. The Brainerd bench erupted in celebration as the Lumberjacks on the ice swarmed to the bench to celebrate with their teammates. The final horn sounded not long after that and the Jacks flooded the ice to mob their goalie, completing the improbable comeback over the Warroad Lakers by a score of 4-3 to return to the Super Series.
Eveleth Redbirds vs East Grand Forks Pointers
The defending champs were pushed to the brink by the Red River Hockey League champs in a low scoring battle between two MAHL mainstays. This was a physical battle more than a high scoring affair with both teams sitting at 1 at the end of regulation. Overtime is always exciting, but playoff overtime in the Eveleth Hippodrome is a whole 'nother beast. The Hipp was shaking with "Go Reds Go" chants as the teams returned to the ice and they continued as play resumed. The type of game remained the same with both teams throwing their bodies at one another. Eveleth had possession in the EGF zone, carrying it along the side boards looking towards the center. With nothing open, the puck was fed to the point for a one timer into the mass of period in front. The puck was blocked by a man in front, but it remained loose in the slot. Players from both teams were batting at the loose puck, not knowing where it was going to go. The Pointers goalie couldn't see what was going on with the mass of bodies all fighting for the puck. Finally the puck squeaked out of the pile towards the point where it was gathered by a Redbird who picked it up and fired it back on goal. The goalie had no idea where the puck was and didn't see the shot until it was too late. The Hipp exploded with celebration as the Redbirds threw their gear in the air in celebration, the Redbirds are heading back to the Super Series, knocking out East Grand Forks 2-1.

1977 Kellogg Cup Playoffs; Second Round - South
Plymouth Militia vs Golden Valley Chargers
For the first time in North Metro Hockey League history, a NMHL member will be playing in the Super Series. It was a high flying offensive game with the Militia and Chargers going back and forth up and down the ice. The Militia broke first blood on a short angle shot that snuck under the Charger goalies arm and in. Plymouth extended their lead to 2 in the second but the Bolts got one back to make it a one goal game as we went to the third. Plymouth drew a powerplay 7 minutes into the period and were able to convert on it to add a two goal cushion once more. Golden Valley was unable to get much going in the third, failing to comeback. Plymouth advances to their first Super Series, becoming the first team from the North Metro to do so.
Edina Cake Eaters vs Mounds View Gunners
Mounds View was playing a very solid defensive game in the first, keeping the Cake Eaters to the outside and keeping them off the board. The Gunners weren't able to get much going on offense though, only getting 5 shots on goal in the period. Edina switched some things up between periods and were able to open up the Mounds View defense to unload 3 unanswered goals in the second. Edina would add one more in the third for good measure as they barrel over the Gunners by a final score of 4-0 to make their 9th Super Series appearance in the last 11 years, extending their current streak to 5.
Minneapolis Millers vs Maplewood Retrievers
The best game of the Section Finals in the Cities was the battle at Parade between the Mighty Millers and the Maplewood Retrievers. Everyone knew that the Goldies were going to come out flying and that is exactly what they managed to do, getting on the board just over 2 minutes into the game. Minneapolis would answer back a couple of minutes later to get right back into things and keep the crowd in the game. Maplewood would get on the board again in the second, putting home a loose rebound to take a 2-1 lead on the road. The Millers would bounce back yet again, this time 6:45 into the third when a shot from the high circle got through a screen in front to tie the game at 2. Overtime was needed in Minneapolis and it didn't take long into extra time for a winner to be decided. The Millers, cheered on with ringing "Lets Go Millers" chants, were wasting no time in OT. The orange and black were relentless in the Maplewood zone, firing shots on net and recovering the rebound to set up another shot. After what seemed like 6 shots had been stopped or blocked, the puck finally found its way to a Miller winger who smacked at the puck, ringing it off the pipe and in. Parade Ice Garden Erupted and Millers flooded over the boards to celebrate. Minneapolis is returning to the Super Series after 5 long years.
Richfield Roosters vs Anoka Warriors
Offense was the name of the game in Richfield as the Cocks and Dubs lit up the lamp on both sides of the ice. Anoka was playing catch up all game, allowing Richfield to take the first lead of the game and never managing to even tie it for the remainder of the game. This doesn't mean that Anoka played bad, quite the opposite really. This was a terrific hockey game from both teams, Richfield just proved themselves to be the better team on the night. When the final horn sounded the scoreboard read 5-3 in favor of the Roosters, sending Richfield to their second Super Series and putting an end to Anoka's season.
