I am excited to start the tenth season of our AltHL Legacy Project. At the end of the week I will be including some first decade notes which should be fun. It is time for the offseason.
IRL the Nashville Predators joined the NHL as the 27th franchise. This addition led the NHL to updating their alignment. They adopted a 6 division format...sweeping away the final remnants of the Patrick/Adams/Smythe/Norris Divisions. This also led to the Toronto Maple Leafs moving from the Western to the Eastern Conference. Important to the league was to strengthen Original 6 Rivals. This alignment brought together three o6 teams...Montreal, Boston and Toronto. Additionally, it was the first time that Montreal, Toronto, and Ottawa played in the same division..rivalries that the league also wanted to forge.
As for the AltHL. The draft was held in Winnipeg, home of the Arrows. The Chevs had accumulated a ton of draft capital via trades over the past couple of season. Many of the notable high picks ended up in Montreal. The best talent actually went to non-AltHL teams. But the best pick went 171 to the Terriers.
7 - Manny Malhotra (PHI)
12 - Alex Tanguay (MTL)
17 - Martin Skoula (MTL)
19 - Robyn Regehr (MTL)
22 - Simon Gagne (VAN)
27 - Scott Gomez (MIN)
45 - Mike Ribeiro (SF)
71 - Erik Cole (DEN)
75 - Francois Beauchemin (SF)
82 - Brian Gionta (MIN)
99 - Shawn Horcoff (POR)
162 - Andrei Markov (SF)
171 - Pavel Datsyuk (TOR)
216 - Michael Ryder (SF)

Holy cow. Gritty you were busy in the draft.
And I'm proud to announce that we've reached my childhood hockey with the Domi Tucker Kaberle and Sundin Leafs with Raycroft and Toskala in nets. The Senators CASH line with Volchenkov, Redden, and Phillips on the blue line, and a crazy rotation of goaltenders. This is my childhood and my favorite era... Oh the memories.....
I grew up on that song. Still one of my favorite intros.

The ‘Blades pick up a guy who can’t do that, it looks like.

It's funny, I've barely seen any Boston picks in these draft recaps.

You should be getting Pietrangelo and Tarasenko soon, should you not? Those are sweet picks that are worth the wait.

That's true. Now that I think about a lot of the core of the Rovers was acquired via trades and free agency. Hull, Fuhr, Turgeon, MacInnis, Pronger, etc.
Seems like it has been working for you!

Truly the Yankees of the AltHL.

Not too much longer before the Bighorns start making some noise. Hopefully the '02 and '06 Canes seasons are enough for the Bigs to get some hardware.

This is the 2009 Season. This season will conclude the first decade of the league. To change things up a bit...the playoffs for BOTH the AHA and CHL will come out tomorrow. The Finals will be on Thursday. Friday, we will do a little bit of 'Wrapping up the decade".
In the meantime, which team do you think was the top team of the decade? We will reveal the all time standings, all decade team, and much more.
