The 1940/41 season concluded and here are the stories.

Iron Range Hockey League: Ely stayed at the top of the league with another dominant season. The Blue Ox jumped up to second place, passing the Reds who finished in third. Virginia, despite finishing below 500, managed to clinch a playoff spot. Hibbing was just out of the picture yet again, with the Miners and Flames rounding out the bottom.

Lake Superior Hockey League: The Duluth Hornets were able to "dethrone" the ever dominant Giants, led by Dubois. The Voyageurs took the 3 spot with Grand Rapids not far behind. Outside the playoffs yet again are the Lakers, Wolves, and Broncos in that order.

Twin Cities Hockey League: The Mavericks were able to maintain the top spot in the Cities. In their first season under Lou Tschida, the Vulcans were able to jump up to the second spot in the league, led by Lou's son Hans. The remaining playoff spots were taken by the St. Paul Saints and Victorias. The Minneapolis clubs finished far and away in the basement in their first year after the split.

1941 Playoffs Knockout Round:

The Vulcans are defeated by the Victorias, ending their season.
In the wildcard bracket, the Saints get the better of Eveleth and advance.
Grand Rapids ruins the chances of another all Duluth series as they knock out the Voyageurs.
Bemidji is just too much for the Royals as they advance to play Ely.

Second Round:

The Victorias put up a good fight but in the end were unable to knock off the top seeded Mavericks.
In a major upset, the St. Paul Saints not only knocked out the Giants from Thunder Bay, they swept them!
The Hornets don't let the Moose knock out another Duluth team, advancing to the semi finals.
Ely is able to squeeze past the Ox on their way to try and defend their championship.

Semi Finals:

South St. Paul was just too much for the Saints to handle, the Mavs rolled over the Saints in 4 games and advance to the finals.
In a series to be remembered, the Hornets came out on top. In one of the most fast paced, back and forth, physical series to date, Duluth was able to get it done in game 5 to advance.

Will the Mavericks claim their fourth Cup? Or will the Hornets end their 20 year drought?

1941 Kellogg Cup Finals

Game 1: The Mavericks came out slow and quickly fell behind in the game. They were unable to make up the deficit as they fell to the Hornets in game one on home ice.

Game 2: South St. Paul was able to bounce back after a poor game one, putting 4 on the board, and only allowing one against to tie the series.

Game 3: As the series headed up to Duluth, the Mavericks carried their momentum from game 2 with them, stealing game three on the road by a score of 2 to 1.

Game 4: Duluth came out hard in the first, going up 2-0 after one. But the Mavericks came back in the second and third, out shooting the Hornets 28-7 in those two periods and taking a 3-1 series lead with it heading back to SSP.

Game 5: The Mavericks came to the ice in front of a packed crowd on the shores of the Mississippi, and they did not disappoint. Going up 2-1 after the first and then putting 2 more in in the third put the Mavericks in the drivers seat, despite allowing one goal in the third, the South St. Paul Mavericks claimed their fourth Kellogg Cup!

A couple of teams from the Lake Superior League made changes to their uniforms prior to the 1941/42 season.

The Cloquet Broncos essentially started from scratch with their new uniform. It is still purple with gold stripes, but it is much more toned down, now it is two thick stripes outlined in white. This is the first time white has been used by the team.

The Duluth Voyaguers decided it was time for a white jersey. Their new jersey is essentially the same as their iconic home jersey, just with colors switched, why fix what isn't broken?

The 1941/42 season concluded and here are the stories.

Iron Range Hockey League: Ely stayed at the top of the league yet again, and are looking to do some damage in the playoffs this season. The Blue Ox and Reds remained in second and third, respectively. Perhaps the story of the season in the Iron Range was the resurgence of the Soudan Miners, despite finishing below .500, the Miners put in their best season in recent history, clinching a playoff birth. Hibbing remained just out of the playoffs yet again. The Royals fell quite a bit this season thanks in large part to injuries. And at the bottom of the league we have the Flames.

Lake Superior Hockey League: The Giants reclaimed the top spot in the Lake Superior League, just inching out the Hornets who finished second. The Voyageurs took the third spot and the final playoff slot was taken by the Superior Lakers thanks to an incredible push at the end of the season where they finished 6-1-0, look out for them as they've been on fire as of late. With Superior clinching, it pushed the Moose out of the playoffs to join the Wolves and Broncos at the bottom of the league.

Twin Cities Hockey League: The Vulcans reclaimed the Twin Cities at long last, pushing the Mavericks to second place. The Saints had another solid season finishing third. The Minneapolis Bruins had a good season, actually making the playoffs ahead of the Victorias. And the Millers finished in the basement with only 4 wins and 20 losses.

Soudan Miners make the most of their playoff opportunity by knocking out the Blue Ox.
In the wildcard bracket, the Reds get back at the Saints after getting knocked out by them last year.
South St. Paul is too much for the Bruins as they advance.
The Lakers stay red hot and knock out the Voyageurs.

Second Round:

Despite losing game 1, the Black Bears are able to come back and take the series 2-1 over Soudan.
The Duluth Hornets are just too much for the Reds as they sweep them and move on.
The Vulcans take care of the Mavs and move to the semi finals.
The Lakers continue to roll as they upset the Thunder Bay Giants.

Semi Finals:

In an incredibly even series, the Duluth Hornets were just able to take the series thanks to a game 5 overtime winner by winger John Williams. The teams celebration after scoring was featured on the front page of the Duluth News Tribune.
Across the lift bridge, the Superior Lakers knocked out the Twin Cities Vulcans as they advance to the finals against their heated rivals.

Will the Hornets finally get that illusive second cup? Or will the Lakers stay hot and bring the trophy to Wisconsin?

1942 Kellogg Cup Finals

Game 1: Duluth came out quick, scoring 1:17 into the first period, and they didn't let up from there. The Hornets would go on to win game one 4-2.

Game 2: The Lakers actually put up the first goal in game 2, though it was answered immediately by Duluth who put up 2 more to Superiors one and took a 2-0 series lead.

Game 3: As the series crossed the lift bridge, the momentum remained with the Hornets who stunned the local crowd by shutting out the Lakers

Game 4: In a tight defensive battle, the Hornets were able to finally put one on the board with 1 minute left in the second. With the lead heading into the third period, the Hornets could almost taste that trophy. The Lakers were able to tie things up 5 minutes into the third, but Duluth answered with one more of their own to take back the lead. The Lakers pulled their goalie with just over a minute remaining and put on the pressure, but they were unable to finish any of their chances. The horn sounded, and the Duluth Hornets have won the 1942 Kellogg Cup!

After a year off, teams from the Lake Superior League met and decided it would be best for the moral of both the players and the citizens of their towns to have something to do and cheer for in the long Minnesota winter. They decided to reinstate the league for the 1943/44 season. The Cloquet Broncos decided not to join this year due to 5 of their members currently fighting in the war. The bitter cross-town rivals, Voyageurs and Hornets, decided to merge for this season, they will simply be known as "Duluth" and they will use the Hornets logo and uniforms since it is a D to represent their city. Due to there only being 5 teams and being the only league to play this year, the Lake Superior League shortened the season to just 20 games rather than the 24 that they had played in years past.

The 1943/44 season concluded and here is how things played out. Duluth, with the cream of the crop, getting all the top players from the city, finished far and away in first. The Giants followed in second with Superior taking the 3 spot. In the last playoff spot were the Timberwolves, getting back in the playoffs. Grand Rapids finished last with only 3 wins on the season.
