Re: Minnesota Amateur Hockey League

There were 4 new mascots introduced for the upcoming season.

The Brainerd Lumberjacks introduced a man dressed in flannel by the name of "Big Paul"

The Red Wing Chiefs introduced "Chief Red Wing" (This mascot is meant the time period only, he will not be around for very long, I just think it would fit for the time period. If anyone is upset with it I can delete it)

Down in the cities, the St. Paul Saints introduced their first mascot, a man named "Saint Paul"

Hearing their rivals introduced a mascot, the Vulcans decided to make one for themselves as well. Vincent "Vinny" Vulcan is the Vulcans logo come to life, he is the first fully costumed mascot in the MAHL.

This is 1973, and we'll be heading into the 1973-74 season.

Glad you like the updates...and he's not even done yet.

Re: Minnesota Amateur Hockey League

The biggest change by a current team was in Crookston where the Kings completely redesigned. Gone is the Old English lettering and numbers, in is the shield with a crown and the teams initials.

The Kings used this chance to change up their jerseys for the first time, replacing the standard striping with something completely new. The shoulders are now purple with a red collar on both jerseys now as well.

Re: Minnesota Amateur Hockey League

St. Paul is about as hockey crazy as you can get, hosting 2.5 MAHL teams, boasting some of the best high school teams in the state as well as now being home of the Fighting Saints of the WHA. With so many people in the city and really only 1.5 teams to choose from with the Saints being private and the Vulcans being primarily made up of people from St. Anthony and Minneapolis. This leaves the Victorias as the peoples team of St. Paul, but with so few people able to make the V's residents from two neighborhoods have decided to put together teams of their own.

Coming from the Northwestern neighborhood of Como are the Sea Lions. Como is one of the bigger neighborhoods in St. Paul, it is an area that is home to the Como Zoo and Conservatory. The Lions will play their home games at the St. Paul Coliseum, sharing a home with the Saints. A natural rivalry with the Saints and Vulcans is bound to form simply due to where the Sea Lions are located.

They are called the "Sea Lions" named after Sparky the Sea Lion, an icon of the Como Zoo. The Sparky the Sea Lion Show has been a mainstay of the Zoo since 1956 and the team thought it would be fitting to name the team after the local "celebrity". Their logo is a Sea Lion balancing a ball on its nose. Their team colors are black, teal and red.

Re: Minnesota Amateur Hockey League

Down in the Southwest corner of St. Paul is the neighborhood of Highland Park. Another well known neighborhood of St. Paul, Highland Park is the where Charles Schulz, creator of the "Peanuts" comics, grew up. Schulz, a lifelong hockey fan, was instrumental in getting a team, donating money to help get things off the ground. The Aces will be playing their home games at 500 seat Drake Arena while Highland Arena is being built.

They will be called the "Flying Aces" in reference to Snoopy's alter ego, honoring Charles Schulz. Their primary logo is only used for print, using a simplified version of the wings on the upper chest of their jerseys along with the "Flying Aces" text. Their colors are "Doghouse Red" and "Charlie Brown".

With the new teams, here is where the St. Paul and Minneapolis teams are drawing from.

St. Paul Saints - Private, must be a member of the St. Paul Athletic Club
St. Paul Victorias - East and Downtown St. Paul
Como Sea Lions - Como Neighborhood
Highland Park Flying Aces - Highland Park Neighborhood
Twin Cities Vulcans - St. Anthony Neighborhood (St. Paul), Northeast and University (Minneapolis)
Minneapolis Millers - All of MPLS, but primarily Southwest, Nokomis, and Calhoun Neighborhoods
Minneapolis Bakers - All of MPLS

Re: Minnesota Amateur Hockey League

Princeton is a town of over 2,500 located north of the Twin Cities. The Brickmakers will be playing their home games at Riverside Park when they face off against their Granite Hockey League opponents.

They will be called the "Brickmakers" which is a reference to the cities early days where the clay in the area was taken and made into some of the finest bricks in the world. Their logo is a roundel with the team and city names on it and  P for Princeton inside. Their team colors are brick red and cream.

Re: Minnesota Amateur Hockey League

Elk River is a town on the verge of a population boom with people moving there in record numbers. Located on the shores of the Mississippi and Elk Rivers, residents have a history of playing hockey during the winters. The Indians will be joining the North Metro Hockey League and will play their home games at 500 seat Elk River Arena.

They will be called the "Indians" referring to a pair of battles between the Ojibwe and Dakota in Elk River back in 1772 and 1773. Their logo is a geometric Native American head with headdress, their secondary logo is an ER monogram for the towns initials, and their team colors are red, black, and white

Re: Minnesota Amateur Hockey League

Eau Claire is a city located east of the Mississippi in Wisconsin. Sitting with a population of over 45,000, Eau Claire will fit right in with some of the bigger cities in the EMHL. The Rubber Kings will play their home games at the Hobbs Municipal Ice Center which holds 1,400 spectators. Eau Claire is now the third team in the MAHL to come from the state of Wisconsin, following the Superior Lakers and La Crosse Brewers.

The team is called the "Rubber Kings" referencing the cities history of producing rubber and tires. Their logo is a roundel with shapes inside forming the letter E and C for Eau Claire in the team colors of black, gray, and white.
