1973 Kellogg Cup Super Series; Playdowns
Maplewood Retrievers vs Sioux City Shockers
The opening game of the 1973 Super Series was a thriller, with the Retrievers and Shockers battling back and forth for over 90 minutes. Sioux City had the biggest lead of the game when they jumped ahead 3-1 in the second. Two unanswered goals from Maplewood would get this one all tied up again and send us to overtime. One overtime came and went with no score, sending us to a second overtime period at Met Center. It wasn't until we passed the midway point of OT 2 before one side finally broke through. The Retrievers were in the right place at the right time, getting the puck in a dangerous area and putting it on net. The Shockers goalie made a great save on the point blank chance, but the rebound was corralled by a Retriever who slammed it into the back of the net, sending Maplewood to the Great Eight.
Superior Lakers vs Little Canada Canucks
The big story coming into this Super Series was the surprise run by the Canucks and whether or not they could keep it going at the biggest stage. Things were looking promising for Little Canada early, drawing a powerplay 5 minutes into the game and ringing a shot off the post. The Lakers struck first, carrying their lead into the second. The Nucks tied it up on a great shot from the high circle that beat the Laker goalie over the shoulder, but a fluke goal with under a minute left gave Superior back the lead heading into the third. Little Canada gave it their all in the third, ringing another shot off the pipe and whiffing on a one time chance. Despite their best efforts, the Canucks just couldn't find the back of the net. Superior put this one away with an empty netter to advance to the Great Eight with a 3-1 win. After the game the Little Canada players skated to center ice to salute their fans who returned with a standing ovation for their Canucks impressive playoff run that has finally come to an end.
Warroad Lakers vs Owatonna Owls
Despite the scoreline, this one was not really as close as you might expect. Owatonna is a good hockey team, but the experience of the Lakers was evident in this one as Warroad dominated time of possession as well as shots on goal. Luckily for the Owls, their goaltender came ready to play, standing on his head to keep his team in the game. Despite his best efforts, his team was only able to get 1 to the Lakers 2. Warroad advances to their first Great Eight in 8 years, ending Owatonna's successful inaugural season.
Twin Cities Vulcans vs La Crosse Brewers
La Crosse was again wearing their lucky yellows when the puck dropped against the Vulcans. The problem was that the luck seemed to have run out. The Vulcans were the far better team in this one, carrying play in the opening 2 periods and coasting through the third to advance with a 3-0 shutout victory to advance and keep their Cup hopes alive.

Wow I thought those Owls had some legs after going through the Packers. Ends up my Lakers hot pick was right x2. I didn’t know who both would be playing when I made that call, but I feel that hot take take turned into more of an obvious pick fast. Lakers were some dream killers this year.

Now the Bavarians can win this game as avengers of the little guy instead of the killers of dreams.

Happy Easter everyone, I hope you're all staying safe and having a good holiday. Here's a double post for the day because I'm bored.
1973 Kellogg Cup Super Series; Great Eight
Grand Rapids Moose vs Maplewood Retrievers
Grand Rapids came out flying for their first game of the Super Series, catching a tired Retrievers team coming off a double overtime win the day before a bit on their heels to start, finding themselves in the lead early. Maplewood would bury a breakaway chance with 3 minutes to go in the first to tie it at one. The second was slow to start with neither side getting much of anything going. The Moose were given a powerplay late in the second which resulted in them regaining the lead. Things got ugly fast for Maplewood in the third. After controlling play for the first couple minutes of the third, a blocked shot gave Rapids an odd man rush which ended with a snipe just inside the post from veteran Didi Miller. The momentum swung dramatically in favor of the Moose after this goal with Grand Rapids getting another 13 shots on goal in the period with one of them finding the twine. The final horn sounded with Grand Rapids up 4-1, the Moose are loose and headed to the semi finals.
New Ulm Bavarians vs Superior Lakers
The second afternoon game was a battle through and through. The physical northern style of play of the Lakers vs the speed and skill of the Bavarians. When the final horn sounded the score was tied 2-2 and shots were tied 27-27. This game was about as even as they come, with neither side holding a lead for more than 4 minutes throughout regulation. We went to overtime in Bloomington to decide a winner. The locals in attendance stood with the Bavarians with Superior being from Wisconsin, but there was a sizable chunk of the arena screaming in support of their Lakers. The puck was dropped and we began play once more. Only a few minutes had passed before the first scoring chance, a one time chance for the Lakers that was just out of reach. New Ulm went back the other way with numbers, getting robbed by a diving Superior goalie to keep this one going. Just over a minute later the Lakers were in the diamonds zone firing shots on goal. A shot was fired wide of the net but it was picked up at the side of the goal by a Superior winger who kept going with speed, wrapping the puck around and into the net before the goalie was able to get to his post. The Lakers swarmed over the boards as the goal scorer took off towards his goalie, jumping in celebration as Superior advances, knocking off the New Ulm Bavarians.
Edina Cake Eaters vs Warroad Lakers
Warroad was hungry for the puck, beating Edina at their own game. Edina is known for their puck possession and team play, if the other team can't get the puck they can't score. But in this one it was the Lakers who just wanted it more, throwing their bodies in the way and going balls to the wall for every loose puck and rebound. It paid off in the second when they finally broke the deadlock. Oshie added another late in the second to give his team a bit of a cushion heading into the final frame. The third came around and Edina had their backs against the wall. The Eaters were forced to play much less conservatively, resulting in a couple near goals for Warroad that didn't come to fruition. Edina was finally able to beat the Laker goalie on a deflection in front to pull within one, but it would not be enough in the end. The final horn sounded with the scoreboard reading 2-1 in favor of the Lakers, keeping Warroad's dream of claiming their first Kellogg Cup alive.
Brainerd Lumberjacks vs Twin Cities Vulcans
Keeping with tradition, the Lumberjacks had yet another slow start to the game, falling behind to the Vulcans in the opening 5 minutes of play. Luckily for the Jacks, the refs helped them out shortly after with a questionable tripping call which Vulcan fans claim didn't happen and that the Lumberjack dove. None the less the penalty was called and Brainerd made it count, tying the game at one. The next goal wouldn't come until 4:20 left in the third when Eli Koemans beat his defenseman and lofted a backhand under the blocker to give the Jacks a 2-1 lead. An empty netter a couple minutes later would put this one away, sending Brainerd to their 3rd Semi Final birth in the past 6 years with a 3-1 win over the Vulcans.

The Battle of the Lakers.
It's gonna happen, boys.

WI got this!!! Sorry my Lakers had to be the ones to knock out Little Canada (I see them being a powerhouse in the near future), but we're making the most of our status as the last non-Minnesota team in this! (Beating such a force as New Ulm is always sweet). Now it's time for us to make sure the Moose...are no longer loose.
I feel this is just the beginning for my Brewers too...we've already been having the most success of any Valley League team not in Rochester, but I know it's only gonna get better, and that celebratory Old Style's gonna stay pourin'.

Grand Rapids is beginning to scare me because they are starting to show performances that mirror my San Jose duds over the years. As an opponent, playing a team driven by 12 goals over three games is terrifying if you slip up for a second. I hope they have the goalie to keep them around if the flame flickers on offense.
Superior, it is nice to see you this far, but it is our 20 year anniversary since our last Kellogg Cup and I believe this would be an appropriate way to celebrate that.
And Burmy, it looks like it is you and I. Moose population in Minnesota seems like it is overflowing, and if our own state couldn't handle the Mad Moose, I don't believe bringing in an outsider will tame it.
Someone call animal control! The MOOSEEEEEES is LOOSEEEEES

Look at my Lakers, cruising into the Semifinals! I'd love to see Lakers vs Lakers, but as long as Superior moves on, I'm feeling good!

I hear a rumbling in the distance... What could it be?
Hmmm...
Maybe ... but dare I suggest it?
Perhaps...
THE MOOSE IS LOOSE!

1973 Kellogg Cup Super Series; Semi Finals
Grand Rapids Moose vs Superior Lakers
The puck dropped for the first semi final matchup between the Moose and Lakers. The first was pretty even, with neither side really taking control by any means. However, a lucky bounce opened up a scoring chance late for the Moose who were able to put it home, taking a 1-0 lead into the second. The second was much faster paced with both teams flying up and down the ice. Grand Rapids added to their lead on a 2 on 1 chance, but Superior bounced back 5 minutes later with a goal of their own to get back to within one. The Moose regained their 2 goal lead thanks to a powerplay goal from Didi Miller. The third began and Superior was forced to play more aggressive, opening up on defense and causing a 3 on 1 chance which was buried by a Moose to take a commanding 4-1 lead. That would be the final score of the game, the Moose are loose and heading to the Kellogg Cup Final where they'll look to win the Cup for the first time in 20 years.
Brainerd Lumberjacks vs Warroad Lakers
Warroad looked like the hungrier team in the first, jumping out to a 2 goal lead in the opening 20. Brainerd woke up in the second and pulled within one, but a powerplay goal for the Lakers would give Warroad back their cushion. We went to the third and it was all Lumberjacks. Brainerd completely bombarded the Warroad goalie with shots, but the Lakers managed to hold them off. The Jacks finally got one through on a rebound with 6 minutes to go. The clock ticked down to the final minute and Brainerd pulled their goalie and set up in the offensive zone. The Jacks continued the offensive onslaught, but Warroad's goalkeeper stood on his head, keeping everything out of the back of the net by sheer determination. The final horn sounded, ending the Lumberjacks comeback attempt and sending the Lakers to the Kellogg Cup Final where they look to finally claim Senator Kelloggs Cup.
