The 1926/27 regular season came to an end with a lot of things to talk about.

Iron Range Hockey League: The Ely Black Bears fell out of first place after back to back years there. The Virginia Royals finished in first place with a record of 21-2-1. The Reds young core led them to a second place finish, led by the strong goaltending of young star Joseph "the Flounder" Brimsek.  The Rangers claimed the last playoff spot leaving Chisholm, Hibbing, and the lowly Soudan Miners out yet again.

Lake Superior Hockey League: A  surprise run in the second half of the season saw the Duluth Hornets back on top of the Lake Superior League. Following close behind were the Broncos, who have to play in the knockout round of the playoffs for the first time. The Voyageurs finished above 500 and made the playoffs but there was nothing significant that occurred this year. The Timberwolves finished fourth in their first season, passing the Superior Lakers who will miss the playoffs for the first time.

Twin Cities Hockey League: The only number one seed from last year to remain at the top are the Twin Cities Vulcans, who finished well above the rest of the pack. The up and coming Victorias edged out South St. Paul to claim the second place spot. In major news; the Minneapolis Millers have missed the playoffs for the first time since the MAHL began. an aged Millers team was unable to keep up with the competition this season as they just missed the fourth playoff spot to the St. Paul Saints. 



 

Game 1: The Duluth Voyageurs head to Virginia riding a wave of upsets, they keep the momentum going as they take game one.
Game 2: The Royals regroup after game 1 and tighten up defensively, not allowing a goal while netting 2 themselves.
Game 3: With the series tied at one apiece it headed to Duluth where the Royals knew they needed to get game one or they had a good chance at losing the next one, because once Duluth gets rolling they're tough to stop. Virginia ended up just barely getting a win with an overtime goal.
Game 4: The Voyageurs gave it everything they had but in the end Virginia was just the better team. Duluth's luck had run out and the Virginia Royals are your 1927 Kellogg Cup Champions!

 

The 1927/28 regular season concluded, here are the highlights.

Iron Range Hockey League: Virginia won the league again. Ely climbed back to the second spot in the league. The Eveleth Reds gained more experience and just barely got third behind Ely. The Chisholm Flames finished fourth and claimed a playoff birth. An aging Rangers team is starting to show their age as they began to slip behind the league this year. Hibbing and Soudan were in the basement of the league, but both are beginning to look up.

Lake Superior Hockey League: An all Duluth top two as the Voyageurs win the league with the Hornets in a close second place. The Two Harbors Timberwolves surprised many with how much they improved in a year, even passing the Cloquet Broncos. Superior had a tough year, having to deal with constant injuries to their top players.

Twin Cities Hockey League: The Twin Cities Vulcans finished the season on top of the Twin Cities for a third straight year, South St. Paul finished just one win behind. Rounding out the top 4 we have the St. Paul's; Victorias and Saints. The Millers had a disappointing season, finishing below .500 and missing the playoffs again. And of course at the bottom we have the Stillwater Athletics, the rented mules of the league. 



 

Game 1: It is a tight defensive game, neither team wants to give an inch and risk giving the other momentum in the series. The game is scoreless after 2 periods, it isn't until Voyageur center Guy Martin beats the Vulcans goalie with 2:16 left on the clock that the game sees its first, and only, goal.
Game 2: In another defensive battle, the Vulcans are lucky enough to break through in the second period. Le Bleus pull the goalie with 2 minutes left to try and tie the game. They get so close to tying it in the last minute when one rings one off the pipe, only to deflect right to a Vulcan who sends it down into the empty net.
Game 3: With the series tied at one apiece and now in Minneapolis, the Vulcans used their home ice advantage to win another close game 2-1.
Game 4: The Voyageurs need a win to stay alive and they did just that, putting up 2 goals in the first period and then playing shut down defense, they won the game and sent the series to a final game 5 back in Duluth.
Game 5: Both teams knew they needed a win here, and both gave it everything they could to do so. The offense was on display in this game ,when one team would score, the other would tie it up. This was all game until it went to overtime. Only 3 minutes into the first overtime period, the Vulcans got called for a tripping penalty. Not long after that, Duluth's Martin buried a one timer, winning the Kellogg Cup for the Duluth Voyageurs!

 

Knockout Round:

• The Lakers, who honestly shouldn't even be there, upset Cloquet.
• The celebrations for making the playoffs are short lived for Hibbing as they lose to Virginia.
• South St. Paul gets upset by the Saints.
• Ely is too much for Two Harbors to handle as they advance.

• Although they were able to beat the Broncos, the Lakers are no problem at all for the Voyageurs who easily sweep them.
• Eveleth is determined to show the league the are serious, and they do their best by beating the Royals and advancing to the semi finals.
• In the first ever playoff battle of St. Paul the Saints pull of a major upset by beating the Victorias 2 games to 1.
• Tschida and the Vulcans are determined to get one more cup before Lou decides to hang up the skates, they do a good job as they sweep Ely.

• Duluth completely dominates the Reds in every aspect, showing everyone just how good they truly are as they try to go for their second straight Cup.
• The Vulcans defeat their old rivals, the Cinderella Saints, and advance to the finals for a rematch of last year against Le Bleus.
