XFL 2020

“The XFL is Back!”

March 20, 2018

Stamford, CT – Vince McMahon is giving it another shot, announcing the founding of a new football league to begin play in the spring of 2020.  McMahon announced the new league, a league completely independent of the NFL would be “tasked with re-imagining the game of football.”  Standing beside him were Charlie Ebersol, son of the initial XFL Co-Founder Dick Ebersol, and Brian Woods, the CEO and founder of The Spring League.

McMahon announced that the league would initially be operated as a dual entity, with all teams owned and operated by the league, under the corporate names, Alpha Entertainment LLC(McMahon) and Legendary Field Exhibitions LLC(Ebersol) as the two ownership groups have already committed 600 million dollars to the new league, enough to finance the league, according to McMahon for it’s first five seasons.  The league does plan to move towards the franchise league model starting in year two when more investors and team owners join.

Ebersol then spent considerable time outlining the major tenets of the new league, among them we highlight the following:

-- A 12 team league to play a 14 game season from early February into May, with concluding with a 6 team playoff, and the XFL Championship game.

-- Teams, along with their coaching staffs, venues and identities will be announced over the next year, with all teams expected to have full operations ready to go for ticket sales by March of 2019 and a player draft in November of 2019.

-- Each team will be allowed to sign a Quarterback for up to $500,000 prior the initial XFL Draft.  Non-QB Player salaries are expected to average between $50,000 and $90,000, depending on position.  Each team’s General Manager would be in charge of a $4,000,000 salary cap.

-- The league is open to allowing collegiate underclassmen to sign and enter the XFL Draft.

-- The league has already hired several members of its football operations team, including the league’s Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer, Oliver Luck, Director of Football Operations, Bill Polian, League President and Chief Operations Officer, Jeffery Pollack, Director of Officiating Mike Pereira, and Director of Player Scouting and Development, Brian Woods.

-- Woods announced that his The Spring League has been purchased by Alpha Entertainment LLC, been rebranded as XFL2 and will serve as the exclusive developmental league for the XFL. XFL2 will also be used to test experimental rule changes and as a traveling practice squad for the league. Woods also mentioned the possibility that some of the former FXFL trademarks may make a return in some fashion or another.

“XFL Provide Late Christmas Presents to Last Four Cities”

December 30, 2018

Orlando, FL – XFL Commissioner Oliver Luck announced Houston, Los Angeles, Orlando and Las Vegas as the last four cities to receive inaugural XFL teams.  These four cities would be sharing their venues, coaching staffs, general managers and team identities to conclude the process.  Luck also announced that the XFL has struck a three year television deal with ESPN(including ABC, ESPN and ESPN2), Fox Sports(including Fox, FS1 and FS2) and surprisingly the NFL Network.  The networks intend to put back to back games on each of Saturday and Sunday sandwiched between prime time games on Friday and Monday nights.   The combined deal would provide the XFL with $50M a year.

Charlie Ebersol and Legendary Field Exhibitions LLC had a unique announcement for the city of Orlando.  They purchased the trademark rights to the Arena Football League's Orlando Predators after previous owner David A. Siegel allowed them to lapse.  Luck said when you think of Arena Football, you think of the Orlando Predators and that team means something to this city.  As if that wasn't big enough news for the city, former Florida Gator Head Coach Steve Spurrier was named for the same position with the Predators.  Darren Arbet and Kevin Coyle were named as the Offensive and Defensive Coordinators, while J.K. McKay will be the General Manager.  The Predators would be playing their homes games in Spectrum Stadium on the University of Central Florida campus.

Vince McMahon and Alpha Entertainment LLC announced the 12th and final XFL inaugural team, the Las Vegas Outlaws! The Outlaws should be explosive to watch as they will be led by June Jones as the Head Coach, Chris Miller as the Offensive Coordinator and Jerry Glanville as the Defensive Coordinator.  Scott Butera would serve as the General Manager.  The Outlaws will play their home games at Sam Boyd Stadium.

“One Year Away!”

February 8, 2019

Stamford, CT – XFL Commissioner Oliver Luck enters the room with a huge smile on his face, “One year away” he announces.  Luck said the league was ready to announce the regular season schedule for the upcoming season along with a timeline for the proceeding months.

-- Rule changes would be finalized and announced in March.

-- Brian Woods would be in charge of all 12 XFL tryouts ranging from early May to mid July.

-- Starting Quarterbacks would be signed by all 12 teams in the month of August.  Each QB would then be used to help promote the league nationally and locally.

-- The XFL announced that a partnership deal was reached with Starter as the official on-field apparel and game day merchandise supplier and with Riddell as the supplier for the league’s helmets.  Both the uniforms and helmets should be ready for release in September.

-- The XFL Draft would take place on October 15 and 16th with training camps beginning in November.  All teams would hold their training camps in Houston.

“Faster, Smarter, Better Football?”

March 17, 2019

Stamford, CT - According to Oliver Luck, the XFL is making "more than two dozen changes" to their rulebook, which will be unveiled later this week. Among the items that will be altered are a running clock, three-tiered point-after attempts and single-play overtime possessions.

"What we did is listen to fans," XFL commissioner Oliver Luck said. "And what they told us is that they love this game, but they would like it at a little more of a faster pace and with a little more excitement. They thought there is too much idle time. We tried to listen to what they didn't want, also.  They didn't want gimmicks or things that were inauthentic. They also didn't want to be complicit when it comes to player safety. So what we wanted to do is take a great game and make it a little better."

Some of the larger rule changes will be from the special teams area of the game:

--During punts, players can't leave the line of scrimmage until after the punter kicks the ball away, so there won't be any blocks.

-- Punts that go into the end zone or out of play will be spotted at the 35-yard line or wherever the ball lands out of bounds. The concept of fair catches and pinning the opposition down deep are being eliminated with this type of rule.

-- On point-after attempts following a touchdown a team will have three options: a one-point play from the 2-yard line, a two-point play from the 3-yard line, or a three-point play from the 10-yard line.

Like the NCAA players will only be required to have one foot in bounds to establish possession on catches. The XFL believes that will make the game easier to officiate and won't lead to long reviews.

Finally, a shootout-style overtime period will be put in place where each team will get five single-play possessions from the 5-yard line. If the game remains tied, teams will rotate possessions until someone comes away victorious.

It appears that the XFL is trying to put out a high-octane, exciting product that football fans will gravitate towards. These rule changes should certainly make for an interesting game and could get fans to tune in early on.

Seems like pretty good stuff so far. Are you going to be doing logos/unis for the teams?

I'll likely use the logos that already exist from the XFL, AAF and Arena League.  However, I have sent a message to the moderators about whether or not I'll be allow to post those logos on this site.  All the helmets and uniforms I have created are new concepts I have made but they won't be allowed if the logos aren't allowed.  So time will tell.

Re: XFL 2020

If Charlie actually worked with Vince instead of rushing a league and going it alone, we probably would have had a 12 team league.

Also, I can see Birmingham being a smash-mouth defensive team under Singletary and Pepper Johnson get replaced by Winston Moss as DC in Week 1.

I currently have Winston Moss as the defensive coordinator for the Dragons but I know why you said that haha. Each team will definitely have their own personalities and playing style. We will have to see how the OL and Defensive drafts play out later today.
