Re: Minnesota Amateur Hockey League

Go Lakers!

And I have the Bavarians, Pointers and Barbarians in there too? It's a good year for teams I like.

Re: Minnesota Amateur Hockey League

Fitting that we begin the Super Series in the midst of the greatest time of the year, tourney time! I will admit I have been disappointed by the results so far this year, but I'm excited to say that for the first time in my life I will finally be attending the State Championship game tomorrow night! Anyways, lets get back on with the story.

1971 Kellogg Cup Super Series; Great Eight

Roseau Stars vs Sioux Falls Packers
Roseau felt right at home in the Met Center, coming in as the top seed and having the crowd on their side being from MN. The Stars wasted no time flexing their muscles, taking a 2 goal lead by the end of the first. Sioux Falls pulled to within one on a powerplay in the second, but Roseau continued to control the flow of play. The final horn sounded with the shots 37-23 in favor of Roseau and the scoreboard reflected this with the Stars winning by a score of 2-1.

Superior Lakers vs New Ulm Bavarians
It was a battle of champions between the 4 and 5 seeds. New Ulm broke first blood at the end of the first, heading into the period break with momentum. They came out in the second with speed and hunger, peppering the Laker goaltender and burying a rebound to take a 2 goal lead. Superior was playing equal to the Bavarians, but just couldn't seem to find the back of the net. New Ulm popped another goal home in the first minute of the third to take a commanding 3-0 lead. The Lakers went all out on attack down three in the final period and they managed to draw a tripping penalty, getting their first powerplay of the game. They were able to make it count, beating the goalie with a point blast and screen to give them a spark in the waning minutes. The Lakers continued to pressure the diamonds, but diamonds thrive in pressure, and New Ulm was able to hold off the attack until the final horn sounded, advancing to the semi finals with a 3-1 victory.

South St. Paul Mavericks vs East Grand Forks Pointers
The Mavs and Pointers were very evenly matched in this one. Shots were within 5 of one another throughout the game and the scoreboard reflected this, being tied 2-2 after 60 minutes. We went to overtime to decide a winner and it began like the rest of the game, back and forth with both teams getting chances. The Mavericks had a shot blocked to the corner where it was retrieved by a Pointer. He wasted no time head manning the puck to his teammates who were quick on the breakout, getting a 3 on 2 chance. The puck carrier was pressured at the circle, firing a quick shot hard and low. It was stopped by the Maverick goalie, but the rebound went right to an East Grand Forks winger who tapped it into the open net, sending his teammates flooding over the boards in celebration.

Edina Cake Eaters vs Steinbach Barbarians
Steinbach got the scoring started in this one, but their lead was short lived as Edina tied things up 26 seconds later. We began the second tied at 1 and Edina was beginning to take over, out skating the Barbs and getting a number of good looks. Edina managed to bury two in the second to take a 3-1 lead heading into the third. Steinbach came out for the third looking hungrier, drawing a couple penalties and bringing themselves to within one. The clock got down to the final minute and Steinbach pulled their goalie to get the extra attacker. They looked for an open shooting lane, but the Eaters were able to keep them to the outside, allowing their goalie to easily push the shots to the corners. Edina won a battle for the puck in the corner and broke out of their zone and down the ice, dumping the puck into the empty goal to secure a 4-2 win.

Let me know what you think, comments are appreciated!

Re: Minnesota Amateur Hockey League

I'm bummed by my Lakers losing, but I like New Ulm too, so I'm not that upset.

YOWIE WOWIE, EGF just beat the Twin Cities League champs at the Met Center!  This is gonna be SO much fun.

I second Dan on this one. Diamonds-Pointers would be sharp.

I third you...though I wouldn't mind seeing the Eaters win their first Cup either.
