Re: MAHL Redux

1915/16

The 1915 offseason was pretty uneventful with the only things of note coming just a few months before the start of the season. Firstly, the Minneapolis Millers baseball team won their 4th American Association pennant. Secondly and more seriously on September 15th the SS Onoko departed Duluth with 110,000 bushels of wheat bound for Toledo. She sprang a major leak off Knife Island about 15 miles from Duluth and the crew was forced to abandon ship. Thankfully there were no injuries or fatalities but the ship did end up sinking to the bottom of Lake Superior.

In the MAHL there were another 6 expansion clubs granted admission into three leagues, two teams per league with four new teams in the North and two in the South. It was a busy offseason for adjustments with a whopping 18 identity changes, including 5 teams adopting official nicknames. We also had one team move into a new home rink and a new rivalry trophy in St. Paul.

The aforementioned new rink was built in Frazee, called the Frazee Town Rink. The new rink was built downtown and features wooden bleachers that can seat up to 250 spectators. Frazee had been playing their home games on Town Lake since their inaugural 1907 season but concerns about ice quality led to the town coming together to build a new rink during the offseason.

Re: MAHL Redux

Rivalry Trophies
From 1904 to 1910, the Capital Cup was used as the championship trophy for the now defunct St. Paul Hockey Association. Named for St. Paul’s status as the Capital of Minnesota, the trophy was retired after the TCHA re-formed. For five years, the Cup sat in the cellar of a house in White Bear Lake after the White Bear Lake Hockey Club took home the cup for the fourth time in five years and walked away as defending champs after the SPHA dissolved. Inspired by the success of the Pennant trophy between the Millers and St. Paul Athletic, a businessman from St. Paul had the idea of bringing the cup back as a rivalry trophy, but instead of being just two teams in contention it would include every club in St. Paul. After years of searching, he managed to track the cup down and bought it off the former White Bear player for $50. Representatives from the Como Park, East Side, Highland Park, St. Paul Athletic, & St. Paul Phoenix Clubs met with the businessman to hear his proposal and they unanimously voted in favor. Since there are more than two teams competing for the cup, the cup will go to the team with the best head-to-head record against the other St. Paul based teams. In the case of a tie the season series of the tied teams is the tiebreaker. If they’re still tied it goes to the team that places higher in the league standings at the end of the season.

Re: MAHL Redux

There are six expansion clubs joining the MAHL this offseason. We'll start in the North where two new clubs are joining the Central Lakes Hockey League.

Pine City Hockey Club
The Pine City Hockey Club is based in Pine City, MN. Pine City is a city of about 1,300 and is the county seat of Pine County. Located on the Snake River, the city has become a center for the logging industry. It isn’t all lumber though with mills on the river, dairy farms becoming more prominent, and even a button factory in town using clamshells collected from the nearby Lakes Pokegama and Cross Lake.

The club opted for simple all-white uniforms with a green pine tree sewn on the front and numbers in black on the back. The team will play their home games at the Pine County Fairgrounds which can seat up to 250 spectators.

Sandstone Hockey Club
The Sandstone Hockey Club is based in Sandstone, MN. Sandstone is a village of about 1,500 on the west bank of the Kettle River. The Ojibwe call the city “Asiniikaaning”, meaning “at the quarrying place”, due to the sandstone quarry at the edge of town. The village was built around a large sandstone quarry which gave the community its name. Outside of quarrying, logging is the other major industry in town with railroads transporting sandstone and lumber out of town.

The team decided on crimson and black striped duds with the village name spelt out inside a stripe across the chest and they will play their home games at the 250 seat Sandstone City Rink.

Re: MAHL Redux

Staying in the North we head across the border to North Dakota for our next pair of expansion clubs set to join the Red River Hockey League.

Casselton Hockey Club
The Casselton Hockey Club is based in Casselton, ND but also represents nearby Mapleton and Amenia. Casselton is a city of about 1,500 and is located just 20 miles west of Fargo. Originally named “Casstown” then later “Casselton”, The city is named after George Washington Cass, the president of the Northern Pacific Railway which established a station there in 1876 to develop a town for homesteaders. The city is a quintessential agricultural community with everything pretty much revolving around the colossal Bonanza Farms.

The club opted to use purple as their official color with no other team in the RRHL using it. Their logo is a stylized C for Casselton with a diamond shaped cutout and their uniforms are primarily purple with their C over the player hearts and white stripes on the torso, arms, and socks. Their home games will be played at the 250 seat Casselton City Rink downtown.

Hillsboro Hockey Club
The Hillsboro Hockey Club is based in Hillsboro, ND but also draws from nearby Halstad. Hillsboro is a city of about 1,200 and is the county seat of Traill County. The city sits about 10 miles west of the ND-MN border and is about halfway between Grand Forks and Fargo. Hillsboro is also an agricultural community that has been built by the massive Bonanza Farms harvesting wheat in and around the city.

Their sweaters are gray with a big old english H for Hillsboro sewn on the front, a single black stripe on the sleeves, and black collars while their socks are solid black. Home games will be played at the newly built Hillsboro City Rink which can seat up to 250 spectators.

Re: MAHL Redux

Finally we head to the South Region for our final set of expansion clubs set to join the Twin Cities Hockey Association.

Highland Park Hockey Club
The Highland Park Hockey Club is based in the Highland Park neighborhood of St. Paul, MN. Highland Park is a neighborhood in the southwestern corner of St. Paul along the Mississippi River just north of Fort Snelling. The name “Highland” comes from the neighborhood's location above the Mississippi River on the bluffs. The area that is now Highland Park was the last to be developed in St. Paul with settlement was banned in the area until the 1840s as it was part of the Fort Snelling reservation. It has since been developed, at least a little bit, and the residents of the neighborhood came together to form their own team.

Their uniforms are primarily gold with a single black stripe on the sleeves, hem, and socks along with black shoulders and collars. The neighborhood’s name is arched on two lines on the front, also in black. Home games will be played at the aptly named Highland Rink which can seat up to 250 fans.

Nokomis Hockey Club
The Nokomis Hockey Club is based in the Nokomis (noh-KOH-miss) neighborhood of Minneapolis, MN but also represents the bordering neighborhood of Longfellow. Nokomis is a neighborhood in the southeastern corner of Minneapolis. Like Highland Park, Nokomis is the new kid on the block in their city with European settlement in the area restricted for years with a native american community being situated between Lake Nokomis and Lake Hiawatha until 1880 and the city not buying the communities namesake lake until 1907. The area is best known for its nature and for quiet living in the big city. The small but growing community takes its name from Lake Nokomis while the famous Minnehaha Falls sits on the border between Nokomis and Longfellow.

The club went with red for their primary color with navy striping throughout their uniforms. The neighborhood name is spelt out in white inside a chest stripe. The club will join the rest of their Minneapolitan brethren and play their home games at Nicollet Park, the 4,000 seat home of the Minneapolis Millers baseball team during the summer.

Re: MAHL Redux

There were a whopping 18 teams making changes to their looks this offseason. We’ll start in the North Region with the lone change in the Central Lakes Hockey League.

Princeton Hockey Club
Princeton dropped their stylized P in favor of the city name arched in a rounded typeface. They went ahead and adopted a new number font that matches the new wordmark as well. The biggest change though is the club's decision to add orange as a secondary color.

Their new uniforms keep the same base layout of their previous jersey, a white body with colored sleeves and shoulders, but the sleeves and shoulders are changed to alternating purple & orange stripes and their new “Princeton” wordmark is arched on the front. The socks are also updated with the white stripes changing to orange to match their new jerseys.

Re: MAHL Redux

Heading over to the Headwater Hockey Association we had two clubs make adjustments.

Frazee Hockey Club
The chest stripe has been tilted and is now a sash with the club’s F mark moved over the players hearts inside the sash. A single white stripe is also added to the sleeves and the socks are inverted to better match the jersey.

Old Jersey

Wadena Hockey Club
The “Diamond-W” has been replaced by a “Curly-W” in Wadena. The center of the curl is left empty instead of filling it in gold like the Diamond-W.

The jerseys are completely revamped. The base color is switched to gold and the sleeves now match the body, but the shoulders are now maroon. The club’s new Curly-W logo sits large on the front while the hem and sleeves get two maroon stripes. The socks are left unchanged, remaining maroon with two gold stripes that are thicker than the stripes on their new jerseys.

Re: MAHL Redux

Up in the Iron Range Hockey League we had another pair of teams making adjustments, including our first official nickname of the offseason.

Biwabik Hockey Club
Biwabik just added a little flavor to their solid blue duds, adding white cuffs to the sleeves and stripes to the socks. The club’s B logo is also enlarged slightly and moved to the center of the chest.

Old Jersey

Eveleth Reds
The Reds are official in Eveleth! After years of being called by the team's iconic deep red color, the winningest club in the history of the MAHL has adopted it as their official nickname. The team will henceforth be known as the “Eveleth Reds”. Corresponding with the name change the club decided to finally make a change after wearing the same thing since 1898. The E has been freed from its circular container and slightly condensed horizontally.

After wearing solid red for years the club decided now was the time to finally add some stripes, adding a thick chest stripe with the team’s E logo inside along with white shoulders and stripes on the sleeves & socks.
