Re: MAHL Redux

1914 Kellogg Cup Quarterfinals

Eveleth Hockey Club vs Long Prairie Hockey Club
The 1914 Kellogg Cup Super Series kicked off with top ranked Eveleth taking on the challengers from Long Prairie. Things started off slow with no goals in the opening frame. The Reds opened up the scoring in the second and before they knew it Long Prairie found themselves in a three goal hole. Long Prairie would net one in the second and another in the third but it would be for not with Eveleth scoring another three in the third to coast to a 6-2 victory and Semi Finals berth. Long Prairie sees their best season in club history come to an end, having won their first league title and making it to the Super Series.

Brainerd Hockey Club vs Anoka Hockey Club
The Central Lakes champions were suffering from an outbreak of influenza that left three of their players home in Brainerd along with a couple players making the trip still not at 100%. Down men and with those here sick, the Lumberjacks didn’t stand much of a chance against the North Metro champions who were at full strength. The game was close at first, tied 1-1 after 20 minutes of play, but Anoka pulled away the longer the game went on. They scored two in the second and two more in the third while Brainerd’s legs slowed and their offense became nearly nonexistent. When the referee blew his whistle to signal the end of the game the scoreboard read 5-1 in favor of Anoka, sending Brainerd back up north to get some bed rest.

Mill City Hockey Club vs Powderhorn Hockey Club
The St. Paul Hippodrome was filled to capacity for the evening session as TCHL rivals Mill City and Powderhorn took to the ice with a ticket to the Semi Finals on the line. Both teams came out fiery, fighting tooth and nail for every loose puck and making sure to finish every hit. It was clear that there was no love lost between these bitter rivals and the game showed it. The game was slow and brutal with shots on goal coming few and far between. The first goal of the contest was scored 8:54 into the third period to put the Millers in front, but it wouldn’t last long with Powderhorn tying it up on their very next shot on goal. The momentum swings could be felt with the Mill City faithful going from jubilation to concern in an instant while Powderhorn fans felt the opposite. 60 minutes passed and we remained tied 1-1, sending us to overtime in St. Paul. The crowd sat on the edge of their seats as the puck was dropped and overtime kicked off. The grueling physical style of play persisted in OT with both sides crowding up the lanes to prevent any openings or offensive chances. The clock continued to tick away and it was starting to look like we might be heading to double overtime, but then we had a winner. You just knew that this one wouldn’t end with a pretty goal, it was gonna be gritty and grimey like the rest of the game, so it’s only fitting that the winner came from a scrum in front of the Powderhorn goal after the initial Miller shot was denied by the goaltender. The rebound lay in front of him while players from both teams converged on the puck, slapping at it with their sticks. A Mill City forward got the best piece of it, smacking it towards the goal and beating the goaltender to make it 2-1. Mill City is heading back to the Semi Finals while their rivals from Powderhorn see their season come to an end in heartbreaking fashion.

White Bear Lake Hockey Club vs Thief River Falls Hockey Club
The ice was cleaned and the second game of the session began between White Bear Lake and Thief River Falls to see who would be taking on Mill City in the Semis. Unlike the low scoring, physical affair of the prior game, this one was a high scoring, explosive matchup that saw both teams combine for 12 goals in regulation. The score was tied 6-6 after 60 minutes of play with the White Bears and Thieves putting their offensive prowess on full display. Despite the difference in games, they both ended up going to overtime, treating the 6,000+ in attendance to plenty of free hockey. It was only a matter of minutes before we had our winner with White Bear Lake blasting a one timer past the TRF netminder. The White Bears are set for a rematch of last year’s Semifinal as they prepare to take on the Millers for a chance at their first Kellogg Cup Final appearance.

Eveleth is growing on me this time around, after I recall not liking them in the previous iteration. Love that matchup between WBL and TRF, I'll be rooting for whoever wins that one.

That's interesting seeing as Eveleth is arguably more dominant now than they were the first time around lol

1914 Kellogg Cup Semifinals

Eveleth Hockey Club vs Anoka Hockey Club
The St. Paul Hippodrome was rocking as the puck was dropped for the first of two semifinal matchups this evening. The first period was a bit of a feeling out process with neither team getting on the scoreboard. Anoka opened the scoring in the second, feeding off the momentum of their go ahead goal to take a 2-0 lead. Eveleth got one back in the final minute of the second to make it a one goal game heading into the third. The Reds picked up where they left off in the second, carrying that momentum into the third as they beat the Anoka goalie on their first shot of the period to level the score at two. They kept the pressure going for the next several minutes, wearing down the Anoka defenders before putting home the go ahead goal with 11 minutes left to play. The North Metro champs refused to go quietly though, pouring on the pressure in the waning minutes of the contest. A rebound found its way to the tape of an Anoka winger who ripped it past the Eveleth netminder with 1:50 left to force overtime. There were a couple shots on both ends of the ice before we had our winner. An Eveleth shot didn’t make it through the traffic in front of the Anoka net but the Anoka centerman was the first one on it as he slapped a shot on target that beat the goalie five-hole. For the 6th time in the 8 year history of the Super Series, the Eveleth Hockey Club will be playing in the Kellogg Cup Final. The Reds move on, knocking out Anoka in a 4-3 overtime thriller.

Mill City Hockey Club vs White Bear Lake Hockey Club
The ice was scraped and resurfaced between games and we were underway for the second match of the session between Mill City and White Bear Lake. This is the third time these two have met in the Semifinals with the Millers taking the victory in both of thor prior meetings (1907 & 1913). The White Bears were determined to finally get over the hump and beat the Millers to get to their first Final appearance and they nearly did just that, pushing the perennial Cup favorites to the limit and then some with the score tied 5-5 after 60 minutes of play. For the second time of the night, we had free hockey in St. Paul. Overtime was electric with the Bears and Millers flying back and forth with chance after chance. The crowd sat on the edge of their seats, if they were sitting at all, as they waited with bated breath to see who would walk away victorious. They say history repeats itself and it did so again tonight when Mill City rang a shot off the post and in to crush White Bear’s dreams yet again. The Mill City Hockey Club is heading back to the Kellogg Cup Final, defeating White Bear Lake by a final score of 6-5 to set up another match with a familiar playoff foe.

Will Eveleth keep the cup in the Iron Range? Or will Mill City end their 5 year Cup drought? Either way, we will have our first 3-time Champions when the Reds and Millers face off for the first time since their back-to-back-to-back meetings in the 1907, 08, & 09 Finals.

Who do you want? Who do you think will win? Let me know, comments are always appreciated!

1914 Kellogg Cup Final

Eveleth Hockey Club vs Mill City Hockey Club
The stage was set and the crowd packed into the St. Paul Hippodrome to watch the champions of the Twin Cities and Iron Range face off for the 1914 Kellogg Cup Final. Eveleth struck first, getting on the board just 3 minutes in. That early goal would be all the offense in the first with the Reds taking a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. The northern boys pushed their lead to two for a minute before the Millers got on the board to make it 2-1. Mill City built some momentum after getting one past the Eveleth netminder, dominating possession and rattling off two quick goals to take a 3-2 lead late in the second. The Reds came close to tying it up in the final moments of the period, ringing a shot off the post but it would not go, and the Millers took a 3-2 lead into the third. Eveleth came out hard to start the third, putting the pressure on immediately and forcing an offensive zone turnover that led to the equalizer to tie the game at three. The Whiteshirts responded a few moments later to retake the lead and swing the momentum in their favor. The Millers poured on the pressure in the minutes following their go-ahead, pummeling the Eveleth keeper with shot after shot until a rebound was put home to make it a 5-3 game with under 10 minutes to play. Eveleth gave it their all in the waning minutes of play but the talented Mill City skaters shut them down to hold onto their two goal lead. The final whistle sounded and the crowd of mostly Miller fans erupted in jubilation.

The Mill City Hockey Club have won the Kellogg Cup! The Millers are the first 3-time champions in MAHL history, adding to their back-to-back Cup wins in 1908 & 1909.

Re: MAHL Redux

Congrats to the Millers! Wish it was White Bear Lake but I prefer orange to red here.
