Casper Ghosts - 4, Vancouver Orcas - 2
The finals were played at the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver with a raucous crowd who were eagerly anticipating a championship win. The Orcas got off on the right track when Tim Callahan opened the scoring just a few minutes in. With the place going absolutely crazy, Casper took a too many men on the floor penalty, resulting in captain Bill Fitzroy unleashing a rocket from the point, bar down for the early 2-0 lead. In a reversal from the semi finals, Casper would take their timeout to try and calm things down. The Ghosts would hang on to end the period down 2.

The start of the second was all Vancouver again until Wayne Vance took a slashing call 5 minutes in. Casper’s playoff hero Ben Schmidt would score on a rebound in the slot to make it 2-1. The Ghosts would come on strong but Anton Kholodkov would shut the door keeping Vancouver up 1 headed to the third.

In the third, the Orcas nerves shined through as they struggled early, failing to clear the ball and taking a holding penalty. Andrew Johnston would tie the game on the powerplay and deflate the crowd who could feel it slipping away. Vancouver would make a push mid-way through the third, but Casper goalie Andy Lovely made an incredible glove save to keep things tied, leading to winger Bob Stadler scoring his first goal of the entire season off a scramble to put  Casper up 3-2. The Orcas would push with the net empty but Ben Schmidt would get another into the empty net as Casper won the 1990 Thomas Cup and took home their championship medals.



After the finals were done and over with, the league revealed it’s awards for the 1990 season:

League MVP - Bill Fitzroy, Vancouver Orcas
Forward of the Year - Vernon Foyt, Quebec Spirit
Defenceman of the Year - Bill Fitzroy, Vancouver Orcas
Goalie of the Year - Stefan Hanzal, San Francisco Rush
Rookie of the Year - Vernon Foyt, Quebec Spirit
Playoff MVP - Ben Schmidt, Casper Ghosts
General Manager of the Year - Curtis Nykoluk, Vancouver Orcas

In total, there were 1027 goals scored in the 1990 season, an average of 2.9 goals a game. Quebec led the league with 91 goals scored in that time. Of course, despite the offence, Quebec failed to deliver anywhere close to a playoff season.

Average attendance was 7,680 across the league which was considered a major success.

With the 1990 season done, scouts and GM’s headed to more open tryouts looking for the next players to add to their team with the 1991 draft and off season. All things considered, it was an extremely successful season for the BHI.
