Re: MAHL Redux

We had another pair of teams making tweaks out west in the Red River Hockey League.

Crookston Hockey Club
Crookston simplified their look a bit, cleaning up the stripes a bit and removing the chest stripe. Their new uniform is primarily red with thin white stripes throughout. The club’s wishbone C is inverted with the chest stripe gone and sits alone on the front of the sweater.

Fargo Hockey Club
Fargo introduced a new arched wordmark of the city name in a tuscan font that is set to replace the sans serif F the team has used since their inception. The club also adopted a new tuscan style number font to match their new logo.

Their new uniforms keep the same idea as their old set but with some changes. The team's new wordmark sits alone on the front of the sweater while the sleeves and socks remain striped like their past look. The stripes are changed though and are now equal thickness instead of thin gold stripes on green.

Re: MAHL Redux

Finally we head to the South Region where two clubs made changes, we’ll start down in the Driftless Area.

St. Charles Hockey Club
St. Charles came out with a starkly different jersey, changing to a green primary with green and gold stripes on the sleeves & socks with a thick gold chest stripe containing the team’s shield, now centered, on the front. They opted to keep the same socks having matched the sleeve stripes on their new jerseys on them.

Re: MAHL Redux

Our last change of the offseason comes from the Twin Cities Hockey Association.

Powderhorn Hockey Club
Powderhorn made arguably the biggest change of any team this offseason, adopting a new color scheme along with new uniforms and a tweaked logo. Their new logo is based on the previous one but is thinned a touch and the angled edges of the P are squared off. The biggest change is in the color with the club formally adopting green as their new primary color in place of black.

The club’s new uniforms are a unique dark green color with gray accents. The team kept the chest stripe from their previous set but the surrounding striping has been altered to a northwestern style stripe on the body with thinner alternating stripes on the sleeves and socks. The team’s new P logo sits centered in the chest stripe in green, as do the numbers on the back, removing any white from their identity.

Re: MAHL Redux

Big fan of the new Sparta logo and sweaters! Unfortunately, I think Baudette went the opposite direction, but that's kind of the nature of things in the early days. Great work as always!

Re: MAHL Redux

The Great Lakes Storm of 1913
A little over a month into the season northern Minnesota was struck by a series of blizzards and hurricane force winds coming from Lake Superior. Known as the “Big Blow”, “Freshwater Fury”, or “White Hurricane”, the storm ravaged the great lakes region from November 6th to the 11th and left cities incapacitated for days. Three ships sank on Lake Superior and although the death toll is officially unknown it's believed to be in the dozens of lives lost. The North Shore, Iron Range, Headwater, Central Lakes, & Northland leagues all went into a temporary hiatus due to the storm, rescheduling games to be played later in the season.

1913/14 North Standings pt. 1

Central Lakes Hockey League
For the 4th time in the 8 year history of the CLHL, Brainerd have taken home the Lake Bowl. The Jacks were simply the class of the league, pulling away from the pack and finishing 10 points clear of second place finishers Little Falls. The middle of the table was pretty even in terms of talent and there wasn’t much separating them in the standings either with St. Cloud, Princeton, Melrose, Sauk Rapids, & Milaca each finished with less than two wins of each other. Aitkin snuck ahead of Staples by one point with Cuyuna Range finishing two points clear of Mille Lacs at the bottom of the table.

Headwater Hockey Association
The Headwater Cup is heading back to the rez with Red Lake Nation taking home the cup with an impressive 29 win campaign. It was another year with the Beltrami County three making up the top three spots in the HHA with Blackduck snatching the two spot ahead of Bemidji by just one point. There is a sizable gap to the four spot where White Earth and Park Rapids tied with 20-12-4 records. Wadena and Cass Lake were the last teams to finish with winning records with Perham being the best of the losers. Detroit and Walker tied for 9th with Fosston settling for 11th despite having more wins on the season. Frazee had 9 wins while Bagley struggled immensely and only managed 5 on their way to a last place finish.

Iron Range Hockey League
The Reds were the class of the Iron Range yet again with Eveleth coasting to their 12th Miners Memorial Cup and yet another trip to the playoffs as the presumed top seed in the north. Virginia, Hibbing, & Ely also joined the 20+ win club while the defending Kellogg Cup champions from Soudan Mine tied with Grand Rapids for 5th with 19 wins for the year. Sparta and Nashwauk were the final teams to finish above .500 while Chisholm, Mountain Iron, Coleraine, & Aurora managed to get double digit win totals. Biwabik and Keewatin tied for 13th with 9-22-4 records with Deer River bringing up the rear just four points behind them.

Re: MAHL Redux

1913/14 North Standings pt. 2

North Shore Hockey Association
The Superior dynasty continues, winning their 4th Lake Superior Cup in the last 5 years as they’ll look to finally get their first postseason win. The North Shore was the most affected by the Big Blow which shut down the league for nearly two weeks. It was also arguably the most balanced league in the MAHL as well with any team capable of winning on any given night. The Duluth squads finished two and three with the Duluth Hockey Club in second and Zenith Athletic in third, both with winning records. Cloquet finished just below .500 but placed ahead of Two Harbors for the first time since 1902 with the Timberwolves having their worst season in recent memory but still placing ahead of 8 win Proctor.

Northland Hockey League
For the third year in a row and 4th time in the last five years, International Falls has won the Northland Hockey League. It wasn’t really close with the boys in blue rolling over the competition and placing an incredible 20 points ahead of the second place finishers. Baudette placed second, the highest finish in club history, while Warroad and Kittson County tied for third with Pembina County just one point behind them. There really weren’t any “bad” teams in the NLHL with the bottom four still finishing with double digit wins and solid hockey teams. Those bottom clubs consisted of Grafton and Roseau ahead of the Canadian clubs from Morden and Fort Frances who finished bottom two.

Red River Hockey League
The Red River was up for grabs this year with a host of teams in the hunt as the season came to an end. When the dust settled it was Thief River Falls who walked away on top, taking home the Red River Cup for the 6th time in club history and will return to the playoffs after a 6 year hiatus. Other teams in the hunt include Moorhead, Red Lake Falls, & East Grand Forks with Crookston and Fargo in contention early before falling back as the season progressed. Ada had their best season in club history, finishing one game below .500 and placing ahead of Grand Forks for just the second time ever. Warren, Mayville, & Barnesville made up the bottom three with losing seasons.

West Central Hockey League
We had a tie atop the West Central with Fergus Falls repeating as champions but sharing ownership of the Knute Nelson Cup with first time champions Long Prairie. As the only league with multiple champions, the committee decided to allow both Long Prairie and Fergus Falls to compete in the 1914 Playoffs despite there being better non-champion teams in other leagues in the north region, causing some controversy and a lot of upset people in Virginia and Duluth. Wahpeton, Alexandria, Pelican Rapids, & Breckenridge joined the champs in the top half of the table with winning records. Sauk Center and Osakis got to double digit win totals and were a bit better than the bottom three who took the brunt of the rest of the league. Expansion clubs Wheaton and Morris finished 9th and 11th with Glenwood sandwiched between them.

Re: MAHL Redux

1913/14 South Standings pt. 1

Corn Belt Hockey Association
Three years, three titles for the Austin Hockey Club who have cemented themselves as the team to beat in the Corn Belt. The Packers finished 15 points ahead of the clear second best team in the league, 22 win Faribault. There was practically nothing separating most of the pack with Owatonna, Mankato, Albert Lea, Northfield, & New Ulm each finishing within 7 points of one another. Sleepy Eye did about as well as expected for their inaugural season, finishing ahead of both Waseca and St. Peter at the bottom of the table.

Driftless Area Hockey Association
The Winona Hockey Club ran away with the Driftless Area title, taking home the Bluffland Cup for the 3rd time in four years and doing so in dominant fashion, finishing 7 wins clear of the next best team. It was a battle for second with Rochester, La Crosse, Wabasha, & Lake City making up the top five, separated by just five points at season’s end. Red Wing and Onalaska made up the small middle class of the league with a sizable gap to the bottom three of Plainview, Zumbrota, & St. Charles.

Heartland Hockey League
Another club establishing themselves as a perennial power in their league is Willmar who steamrolled the competition on their way to their third straight Heartland Cup. Hutchinson, Granite Falls, & Montevideo joined Willmar in the winning records club with Redwood Area, Benson, & Glencoe each failing to reach double digit win totals as they are left in the basement of the league.

Re: MAHL Redux

1913/14 South Standings pt. 2

North Metro Hockey Association
The North Metro remains firmly under the ownership of the Anoka Hockey Club who has now won 4 straight titles. Plymouth had their best season in club history winning 18 games and finishing in second. Brooklyn, Medina, & Maple Grove made up the middle of the pack with Corcoran finishing last for the fourth time in their four year history.

St. Croix Hockey League
The St. Croix was a two team battle between the defending co-champions with White Bear Lake and Stillwater finishing over 20 points clear of the next best club. The White Bears would walk away on top, punching their ticket to the playoffs for the 5th time while Stillwater is left on the outside looking in despite finishing just 2 points behind their rivals. North St. Paul, Hudson, & River Falls were all decent and finished right around .500 while Hastings and New Richmond struggled to get in the winners column.

Twin Cities Hockey Association
The TCHA was by far the most talented league in the south region, perhaps in all of the MAHL, with many teams considered among the best in the state. It’s only fitting then that the best of the best would be Mill City. The winningest team in Twin Cities history has clinched the Washburn Cup for the 13th time along with the Pennant as they bested the 3rd place St. Paul Athletic Club in all three of their meetings this year. Finishing 2nd and earning a spot in the playoffs as the lone non-champion participant this season is Powderhorn who are returning to the playoffs for the third time in club history. Como Park and Calhoun Isles tied for 4th while Minneapolis and East Side finished one point apart in 6th and 7th. Rose was the last club to reach double digit wins with South St. Paul, West St. Paul, & the Phoenix Athletic Club rounding out the league with losing seasons.

West Metro Hockey Association
The West Metro was Richfield’s to lose, holding the top spot in the standings for three quarters of the season before it all fell apart in the end. An 8 game winless streak to end the season saw the Tigers blow their lead and fall behind Edina Athletic who swooped in to take home the Hennepin Cup for the third year in a row. There were basically three tiers in the WMHA this year with the aforementioned Edina and Richfield in the top tier while West Minneapolis and Chaska made up the middle tier with St. Louis Park on the bubble while Shakopee sat as the league’s basement dweller.
