Re: MAHL Redux

1912/13 North Standings pt. 1

Central Lakes Hockey League
It was a two team battle in the CLHL with St. Cloud edging out a very good Little Falls team by one point at season's end to clinch the Granites 5th league title in club history and first in five years. Brainerd, Aitkin, Milaca, & Princeton had solid seasons as well, each finishing above .500 for the season. Sauk Rapids had a down year by their standards, finishing with a losing record for the first time since 1906. Staples, Mille Lacs, & Melrose lost more than they won but were able to steal a win here and there while Cuyuna Range struggled immensely, winning just one game all season long.

Headwater Hockey Association
The Headwater was one of the most talent heavy and balanced leagues in the MAHL this year with Bemidji taking home the Headwater Cup at seasons end for their third title in club history. Fellow Beltrami County residents Blackduck and Red Lake Nation came second and third with all three Beltrami County clubs finishing with 20+ win seasons. Cass Lake and Park Rapids tied for 4th while White Earth and Wadena finished tied for 6th. That rounds out the top half of the league with Perham, Detroit, & Frazee finishing with losing records followed by the expansion clubs from Walker, Bagley, & Fosston who finished bottom three in their inaugural seasons.

Iron Range Hockey League
The Iron Range was a bloodbath and widely considered the best league in the MAHL this year with a whopping 5 clubs finishing with 20+ win seasons. The Miners Memorial Trophy went to the Soudan Mine Hockey Club for the second time with the Mighty Reds of Eveleth finishing just one point behind in second and getting selected as the North Region’s sole non-champion playoff participant. Ely, Hibbing, & Sparta were the other members of the 20 win club, separated only by ties. Virginia and Grand Rapids also boasted very good hockey clubs who fell just shy of 20 wins with Virginia winning 19 and Grand Rapids winning 18. Mountain Iron was a surprise, finishing their first ever season in the toughest league in the state with a winning record. Coleraine, Chisholm, Nashwauk, & Deer River had losing records but managed to get 10+ wins on the year while Biwabik, Keewatin, & Aurora could not.

Re: MAHL Redux

1912/13 North Standings pt. 2

North Shore Hockey Association
It came down to the wire with Superior and Duluth fighting for the top spot in the standings all season long just to be separated by one measly point after 30 games. The Superior Hockey Club of Wisconsin would walk away with the Lake Superior Cup for the third time in the last four years while Duluth sees their season come to an end as the first team out with Eveleth getting selected over them as the non-champion playoff participant this offseason. Two Harbors had another winning season but lacked the dominance of their championship team from last year. Zenith Athletic and Cloquet finished just four points apart on the bottom half of the table while Proctor struggled again with a 4 win campaign.

Northland Hockey League
For the third time in the last four years, the North Star Cup is going to International Falls. I-Falls was the only team to reach 20 wins this year in the NLHL, finishing 14 points clear of second by the end of the season. Kittson County finished second and were the only other club with a winning record as Fort Frances and Warroad each had the same amount of wins and losses on their way to 3rd and 4th place finishes. There was very little difference in the rest of the league with just 4 points separating Baudette, Grafton, Morden, Roseau, & Pembina County at the bottom of the table, further adding to the Northland’s reputation as the league with the most parity in all of the MAHL.

Red River Hockey League
There was a “big three” of sorts in the Red River this year with East Grand Forks, Moorhead, & Thief River Falls battling at the top of the standings and pulling away from the rest of the pack by season’s end. EGF would repeat as league champs and hold onto the Red River Cup with an impressive 25 win season. Moorhead would also surpass the 20 win threshold on their way to a second place finish with TRF settling for third. Grand Forks and Crookston had strong teams who finished with winning records while Red Lake Falls had a down year and ended with a .500 campaign. Fargo, Ada, & Warren lost more often than not but were good enough to steal a win every now and then against superior opponents while Mayville and Barnesville struggled in the basement with a combined 9 wins against the rest of the league between the two of them.

West Central Hockey League
We have a first time champion in the West Central with Fergus Falls taking home the Knut Nelson Cup with a club best 22 win season. Last year's champions weren’t far behind with Alexandria also putting together a 20 win season but missing out on the playoffs. The boys from Wahpeton continued to impress in their second season as they finished in third, just one win shy of 20 for the year. Long Prairie and Pelican Rapids round out the winning clubs with very little separating Sauk Center, Breckenridge, & Osakis below them. Finally in last we have Glenwood who really struggled early, not winning their first game until January and only winning four more from there.

Let me know what you think, comments are appreciated!

Re: MAHL Redux

1912/13 South Standings pt. 1

Corn Belt Hockey Association
The Corn Bowl is staying in Austin and it wasn’t really ever a doubt. They were the cream of the crop, losing just 4 games all season and pulling away from the rest of the pack by season's end. The rest of the league was pretty even with Faribault, Albert Lea, & New Ulm having winning seasons while Northfield, St. Peter, Owatonna, & Mankato lost more than they won. In the basement was Waseca, the only team to fail to reach a double digit win total for the year.

Driftless Area Hockey Association
The DAHA was split into three tiers this year; the elite, the average, & the bad. The elite tier consisted of Winona, who took home the Driftless Cup for the second time in team history, along with Rochester and last year’s champions, La Crosse. The average tier included Wabasha, Lake City, & Red Wing while St. Charles and Onalaska were quite bad, failing to reach double digit win totals.

Heartland Hockey League
Three years, three titles. The Heartland Cup will remain in Willmar after another dominant season by the Willmar Hockey Club, losing just two games all season. Montevideo was the only club even close, putting up an impressive 20 win campaign in their own right, but Willmar was just too good as they return to the playoffs while Monte sees their record breaking season come to an end. There was a sizable gap to the third place finishers from Granite Falls, but there was very little separating them from Redwood Area and Hutchinson who finished 4th and 5th. There was another gap to the bottom two with Glencoe and Benson having seasons to forget.

Re: MAHL Redux

1912/13 South Standings pt. 2

North Metro Hockey Association
Make it three titles in as many years for the Anoka Hockey Club who continues to dominate the young NMHA. Brooklyn and Plymouth each had winning seasons with 10 losses, separated only by ties. Medina and Maple Grove tied for fourth with Medina getting placed ahead of Maple Grove despite having less wins due to winning the head-to-head season series. Finally in last place we have Corcoran who really struggled this year, winning just 4 games.

St. Croix Hockey League
We have a tie atop the St. Croix with Stillwater claiming their third straight title along with White Bear Lake who gets their hands on the St. Croix Cup for the first time. Due to tying atop the standings, both teams were selected as playoff participants from the South Region, meaning there won’t be a non-champion participant from the region this year. No other teams in the SPHL had a winning record with Hudson, Hastings, & North St. Paul making up the middle of the pack. There was a sizable gap to the bottom two with River Falls and New Richmond combining for just 9 wins against the rest of the league for the season.

Twin Cities Hockey Association
For the first time since 1903, the Mill City Hockey Club has won the TCHA. Yes, they won 6 MHA titles since then, but this is the first time the Millers have won the re-formed Twin Cities Hockey Association. The defending Kellogg Cup champions finished second and were likely to be selected as the non champion participant from the South were it not for Stillwater & White Bear Lake tying in the SCHL, leaving the St. Paul Athletic Club out of the playoffs and unable to defend their crown. Como Park, Calhoun Isles, & Powderhorn each had very good hockey teams as well, each finishing with winning records. Three clubs finished with 12 wins; those being Minneapolis, East Side, & South St. Paul. There really weren’t any bad teams in the Twin Cities this year with even the last place finishers having a solid hockey team. The bottom of the table consisted of Rose and West St. Paul who tied for 9th with Phoenix Athletic just one point behind them.

West Metro Hockey Association
Edina Athletic has gone back-to-back, holding onto the Hennepin Cup and returning to the playoffs for the second time. Richfield was healthy again this year and looked more like their usual selves, actually holding the top spot in the standings for most of the year but falling apart in the second half of the season, allowing Edina to pass them and take home the title. There was a third team in the hunt as well, that being West Minneapolis who put together their best season in franchise history and won an impressive 17 games. There was a drastic difference between the top and bottom halves with Shakopee, St. Louis Park, & Chaska each finishing well below .500 for the season.

Re: MAHL Redux

I love that we're getting a de facto st croix championship game in the play-in round. was that intentional or just a coincidence?

pulling hard for anoka in this round and I might pull for them all the way if they win, who knows

Hmm, West St. Paul continues to disappoint. White Bear Lake's adorable polar bear has my support.

Since they ended the season tied it only made sense that they would be one seed apart, but the fact those spots were the 4 & 5 seeds was a happy coincidence.

Poor West St. Paul is just unlucky being in arguably the best league in the MAHL. Being one of the smallest communities in that league also doesn't help things for the Wasps. It'll probably be quite a while before they're competing at the top of the table.
