Re: MAHL Redux

1911/12 North Standings pt. 1

Central Lakes Hockey League
The Central Lakes belong to Brainerd. The Lumberjacks were a force to be reckoned with, finishing 15 points clear of second place and clinching the Lake Bowl for the 6th time in team history. Little Falls and St. Cloud also boasted very good teams, finishing second and third. Milaca was a surprise, coming out and finishing their inaugural season with a winning record and finishing one spot ahead of the defending league champs from Sauk Rapids. Aitkin finished in the middle of the pack and was the last team to end with a winning record. Staples, Princeton, & Cuyuna Range were about equal in talent and lost more than they won while Melrose and Mille Lacs had flat out disappointing seasons that they would like to forget.

Headwater Hockey Association
After finishing 3rd, 2nd, 3rd, 3rd, & 3rd in the past five years, Blackduck finally got their hands on the Headwater Cup. It wasn’t easy though, with Park Rapids, Red Lake Nation, & Bemidji hot on their heels in a four team fight at the top of the table. Detroit and Cass Lake finished with more wins than losses but were middle of the pack along with Wadena. White Earth, Frazee, & Perham brought up the rear and were on the losing side most nights.

Iron Range Hockey League
The Iron Range was a beast yet again this year with talent from top to bottom and some of the best hockey teams in the nation. The Red Menace reigned supreme with Eveleth repeating as league champs, taking home the Miners Memorial Trophy for the 11th time in club history. Bitter rivals Ely and Soudan Mine finished one point apart in second and third with Hibbing joining them in the 20 win club with a fourth place finish. The parity of the IRHL is evident with how close the rest of the league was. There was very little separating Coleraine, Sparta, Chisholm, Grand Rapids, Virginia, Biwabik, Keewatin, & Nashwauk and the only team to fail to reach 10 wins was Aurora who finished in last with 9.

Re: MAHL Redux

1911/12 North Standings pt. 2

North Shore Hockey Association
After a five year hiatus Two Harbors is back on top of the NSHA. The Timberwolves held off their arch rivals from Duluth in second, edging them out by one point to take home the Lake Superior Cup for the second time in club history. The North Shore was a bloodbath with everyone in contention aside from Proctor who were treated as a punching bag by the rest of the league and only won 4 games. Superior, Zenith Athletic, & Cloquet were about equal with any of them able to win on any given night, helping make the North Shore one of the most entertaining leagues to watch this year.

Northland Hockey League
The Northland was interesting this year with a couple outliers on either end and a big middle class. International Falls ran away with the North Star Cup, finishing 16 points clear of second by season's end to clinch their second title in team history. At the other side of the table we had Roseau who had a really tough go of things, winning just 5 games on the season and finishing 8 wins behind the second-to-last place team. Between them we had Fort Frances, Kittson County, Warroad, Baudette, Pembina County, Grafton, & Morden who all finished within 5 wins of each other.

Red River Hockey League
We have a first time champion in the RRHL with East Grand Forks putting together their first 20+ win season to take home the Red River Cup. Thief River Falls also had a 20 win campaign and punched their ticket to the playoffs as the only non-champion participant from the north region. The reason for their selection was due to having the highest win percentage of the northern non-champions (0.678), edging out Ely (.657) and Park Rapids (.638). The rest of the league was split into two groups. The winning clubs were Crookston, Grand Forks, Red Lake Falls, Moorhead, & Warren. Then there was a drastic drop off to the bottom four who each finished well below .500, those clubs being Fargo, Mayville, Ada, & Barnesville.

West Central Hockey League
The first ever champions of the Knute Nelson Cup are the Alexandria Hockey Club. Alek started out hot and never looked back, finishing 17 points clear of second place by season's end. Fergus Falls finished second with expansion club Wahpeton surprising many and placing third. The middle of the pack consisted of Long Prairie, Osakis, Sauk Center, & Pelican Rapids with Glenwood and Breckenridge having a rougher go of things in their first seasons.
