Re: MAHL Redux

From one champion to another, Mill City must be really happy avenging their loss from last year. Well done.
On that note (and I asked this before), at what point do we see teams take on nicknames? And which teams survive and fall down as the years go by?

Teams already are being referred to by nicknames (Millers for Mill City, Saints or Apostles for the St. Paul Athletic Club, Lumberjacks for Brainerd, Reds for Eveleth, White Bears for White Bear Lake, Tigers for Richfield, & Timberwolves for Two Harbors to name a few) but they won't start adopting official nicknames until the mid 1910s at the earliest with some teams likely to remain nicknameless up to as late as the 1930s.

There will be a few teams here and there that fold or merge as populations rise and fall in different towns, but overall most of these teams will be around in the modern day.

Re: MAHL Redux

1908/09
We had three new clubs officially join the Headwater Hockey Association during the summer of 1908. Now with 12 members, the HHA has adjusted their schedule to be 33 games with each team playing the rest of the league three times per season. Teams that get two home games against an opponent one year will play two on the road against them the next year. There were also 8 teams from across the MAHL that made some sort of change to their identities prior to the upcoming season.

There were three clubs that made a move into a new home for the upcoming season. Alexandria built a new rink downtown, moving the team off of the pond at Noonan Park and into the new 250 seat Alexandria City Rink. Over in Detroit, the hockey club announced it will move into the recently renovated Washington Park. The field has been used for baseball since 1897 but after grandstands were built this summer the hockey club decided to use the field as their new home for the coming winter, using the grandstand to allow for up to 1,000 seated spectators. Finally we have the Superior Hockey Club of Wisconsin who are heading indoors, moving from the Superior City Rink into the brand new Superior Curling Club which has seats for up to 750.

I figured I should make something for the new rinks every year instead of just writing about them. Let me know what you think of the new graphic!

Re: MAHL Redux

There were 3 expansion clubs joining the Headwater Hockey League this offseason, let’s start with the northernmost newcomers.

Cass Lake Hockey Club
The Cass Lake Hockey Club is based in Cass Lake, MN but also represents the rest of the Leech Lake Indian Reservation & nearby Bena. Cass Lake is a city of about 2,000 in Cass County on the shores of the lake which gives the town its name. The city is the headquarters of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe as well as the Chippewa National Forest which was just established in 1908. The city is a quintessential lumber town with multiple lumber, planing, and sawmills. This has led to the town having a unique mix of lumberjacks and native americans living side by side.

Their uniforms are dark green and old gold striped with white numbers on the back and the team will play their home games outdoors on Cass Lake.

Re: MAHL Redux

Perham Hockey Club
The Perham Hockey Club is based in Perham, MN (PURM) but also draws from nearby Dent & Richville. Perham is a city of about 1,300 in Otter Tail County. The city was initially a lumber town but once the trees were gone the town transitioned to agriculture, specializing in wheat production. Nothing impacted the city more though than the Northern Pacific Railroad which connected the town to the outside world and allowed it to grow into the city it has become.

The team decided on solid purple uniforms after the wife of one of the founding members proposed the color for its alliteration with the town name, calling it “Perham Purple”. A stylized P is sewn small on the front of their sweaters in white. Their home games will be played at the East Otter Tail County Fairgrounds which has bleacher seating for about 250.

Re: MAHL Redux

White Earth Hockey Club
The White Earth Hockey Club is based in Mahnomen, MN but represents the entirety of the White Earth Indian Reservation. It’s impossible to know for sure because there were no censuses for reservations at the time, but there are roughly 5,000 or so people who live on the White Earth Indian Reservation as of 1908 with Mahnomen itself having a little under 800. The name “White Earth” comes from white clay found on the reservation. The area is also known for having an abundance of wild rice, a staple of Ojibwe culture and cuisine. The name “Mahnomen” actually comes from the word “Manoomin” which means wild rice in the Ojibwe language.

The team went with black and white stripes of various sizes for their sweaters and socks with player numbers in red on the back. They will play their home games at Wild Rice Rink which can seat about 250 in downtown Mahnomen.

Those are some zebra stripes, I tell you what.

It does mean that it may take more time to write up the stories. Don't rush it, though.

Re: MAHL Redux

We had 8 teams make identity changes, let’s start up in the CLHL where we have one club coming out with a new look.

Bemidji Hockey Club
The Bemidji Hockey Club introduced a new block B logo on their new uniforms, replacing the hand drawn B they have used since their inception in 1898.

The new sweaters for Bemidji keep the striped sleeves and add stripes to the shoulders to make it appear as though the stripes continue from one sleeve to the other. They keep the same socks from their previous set and put their new block B logo front and center on their sweaters in white.

Re: MAHL Redux

Next we head up to the Iron Range where one team made some changes, but not because they wanted to…

Chisholm Hockey Club
The city of Chisholm was faced with catastrophe on the evening of September 5th when a devastating forest fire rolled through town, wreaking havoc and destroying everything in its path. The fire began near Hibbing and high winds moved it directly in the direction of Chisholm. The mining town went up in minutes once the fire arrived thanks to a mix of dry weather and nearly every building in town being made of wood. The business district and ⅔ of the residential homes were destroyed in the blaze, but thankfully nobody was harmed or killed. Many residents escaped the flames by jumping into Longyear Lake, but the town was left in shambles and forced to rebuild.

Unfortunately for the hockey club, their uniforms were destroyed in the fire. Left with nothing and just a few months away from the season, the team was left scrambling to put together a set. They introduced a new logo, a slightly tweaked version of their previous old english C, and swapped out dark red for black.

With just a couple months to put together a new set, the Chisholm Hockey Club decided to keep it simple for the upcoming season. Their new logo sits in black on the front of a solid gold sweater with black numbers on the back. They also opted to go with solid black socks instead of gold like the sweaters.

Re: MAHL Redux

1/3 of the NSHA made uniform changes with a pair of Twin Ports clubs introducing new logos and uniforms prior to the 1908/09 season.

Duluth Hockey Club
The historic Duluth Hockey Club is bringing back the old english D… kinda. Yes, this is the second time that the club has used an old english D but the actual form and shape of the logo they just introduced is not the same as the original which was wider and had a bunch of other little differences. They also reverted back to a more traditional block number set like they had originally used.

The base of the new uniform for Duluth remains navy but a white sash is placed on the front of their sweaters, the collars are now white, and two thick white stripes are added to the sleeves and socks. Their new old english D sits on the upper left chest over the players' hearts in white.
