Re: The AltHL - Group C Voting & Owner Application!

I think a rose theme in Portland is a great idea, but Rosebuds might be a tad clunky. How about Portland Petals? Have a color scheme like their woman’s soccer team, the Portland Thorns (which is an even better name), maroon, darker green and black would be unique.

And for Quebec I’d do Quebec City Bonhommes - if someone is better with French can you correct me please. I know Bonhommes means “good natured man” and it is the name of the mascot for the Quebec Winter Carnival since 1955. This festival is HUGE there. It dates back to 1894 and I believe is one of the largest winter festivals in the world. There is so much imagery to play off of for the identity (like the arrowhead sash) and I could see their fun loving mascot’s head on the chest of a jersey. Please look this thing up it’s awesome. I don’t know the appropriate plural for Bonhomme, but in English I’d guess it translate over to something like Bonhommes of Quebec City.

Edit: To separate the ideas from all the info

Portland Petals
Quebec City Bonhommes or that in french if someone is kind enough to help me out

Re: The AltHL - Group C Voting & Owner Application!

Chicago Chill ("CHI"cago, "ILL"inois", plus it's a natural hockey name, with a good Windy City tie-in)
Denver Apex (tie-in to the Rocky Mountains or to the apex predators in wildlife)
Halifax Unicorns (Scotland's national animal, fantastic branding ideas)
Seattle Samurai (to honor the strong Japanese cultural presence there)

New York Tycoons (nod to the numerous business moguls downtown and in Wall Street)
Portland Bucks (reference to the deer sign)
Quebec Diamants (reference to Cap Diamant ("Cape Diamond") in the city)
Vancouver Orcas (I second ProsecutorMiles)

I saw this and thought of Illinois abbreviation being IL making it just the Chicago Chil haha! Great idea! I like it a lot.

And I’m not keeping count but how many cities are we trying to call unicorns? That had to be a suggestion before right? Or am I going crazy? Either way, I back forcing the name on one of these cities I don’t care which! It’s too fun! It sucks we don’t have a Dallas team or Pegasus would be an absolute no brainer.

New York Gothams- Gotham is a nickname for New York
Quebec City Voyageurs- Same in English and French
Vancouver Evergreens- The city plans to become the Greenest City in the world by 2020

Re: The AltHL - Group C Voting & Owner Application!

Seattle Seawolves - Nickname for an Orca which is native to the area.

Chicago Cleavers - Taken from Chicago's meat packing history.

Halifax Skippers - Related to the naval history of the city.

Colorado Cows - This is a South Park reference, with South Park taking place in Colorado and their sports team being called the Cows.

New York Gargoyles - Based off the Guardians of the XFL, I think this could be a really unique identity for the big apple.

Quebec Owls - The Snowy Owl is the provincial bird of Quebec.

Vancouver Dragons - Plays off Vancouver's large Asian population.

Portland Stags - Same as previously mentioned, just without the White.

Re: The AltHL - Group C Voting & Owner Application!

Hey everyone!

Great suggestions so far.  I feel like this crop of submissions is even better than the last group.  With that said I want to address a couple of team names that I have seen so far so that we don't have to deal with it later in the process.

Seattle Sasquatch - I have seen a number of people use this name.  I know for a fleeting moment Seattle NHL had this name on one of their lists.  With all of that said, since the name is more popular than any one person's concept the Sasquatch is a name that is ELIGIBLE.

Denver Dynamite - this is a name that has been used by an arena soccer and an arena football team name.  But since those sports were not apart of the rules the name is ELIGIBLE.

Chicago Hitmen - this is a great name for a rough and tough hockey team, especially for a team from Chicago.  With that said this was one of the original teams of the IceHL.  So the Hitmen name is NOT ELIGIBLE.

Halifax Highlanders - This is a weird one because this is the name of the team from the movie Goon.  Since it wasn't apart of the rules it has to be ELIGIBLE but people can take that into account when the time comes for voting.

------
Someone mentioned the name Unicorns.  It was nominated for the city of Boston.  Since Boston became the Rovers the name Unicorns is eligible for Halifax.

As for the team name Dragons.  The Dragons have been nominated for Boston, Montreal, San Francisco and Vancouver.  Dragons is eligible for Vancouver, however if the vote for San Francisco chooses Dragons then I will take Dragons off of the Vancouver ballot.

The names become nominees once someone suggests it.  So if your team name is put before you get a chance to feel free to think up another name so your submission isn't wasted.

I think that covers everything so far.  Great names! This league is going to look really good once we are done.

Re: The AltHL - Group C Voting & Owner Application!

As far as my submissions, some of the names have already been taken (which is a good thing!)

Seattle Bombers
Seattle is an aviation hub of the US and Boeing mightily contributed to the war effort.  They helped build the US' fleet and developed the famed Flying Fortress.  The arena can be called The Fortress.

Chicago Ghosts
My local high school in growing up was nicknamed the Galloping Ghosts.  They got their name from when Red Grange visited their campus.  That was his nicknamed and was a sports icon in the midwest and especially Illinois.

Atlantic Puffins
We could go the route of the CFL and choose the name Atlantic so that our team represents other provinces like NB and PEI.  The Puffins could make for a fun identity.  The Puffins official name is the Atlantic Puffin.

Colorado Growlers
As a Colorado resident I wanted to try and capture multiple parts of our culture with this name.  Growlers could  reference the Black Bear which was a nominee for the Avs originally (as someone previously said). Growlers also references Colorado's extensive beer industry.  Home to big companies like Coors and Budweiser West as well as a tremendous number of smaller breweries.

New York Rink Rats
New York's famed Rat Race, Pizza Rat, should be fun.

Vancouver Glaciers
I've always loved this name for a hockey team.  Glaciers are common in Western Canada.

Portland Navigators
A new take on the explorers of the Oregon Trail.  Let's Go Navs!

Quebec Harfangs
Someone mentioned the snowy owl as the official bird of Quebec.  Harfangs is an alternative name for a snowy owl.  I also thought that name 'Fangs would be pretty menacing.

Great name, but does the rule still apply if a fictional city on this site uses it? The Yubay Glaciers are part of Steel’s THL series.

No, the only way that it would break that rule would be if we named them the Yubay Glaciers.  The only scenarios we are banning a name no matter what is if it is an NHL, AHL or IceHL team.  The second level of the rule would be we can't have teams with the same name in the geographic market.  And then, for example, if we chose the Glaciers we would make sure to not copy any logos, uniforms, etc.  We would be limiting ourselves a lot if we didn't tier the rules a bit.  We have had a number of submissions thus far that use the same name but in a different location.  But with that said, like the Highlanders, if people feel strongly about it they can reflect it during the voting.
