Ummmm, can someone check to see if the Winona Wildcats are alive? There’s mold starting to form around them in the cellar...

With so many teams now outside the state of Minnesota, I wonderr if the MAHL will get a name change?

Things are rough in Winona, but at least the team seems to have a good attitude about it.

I'm not going to rule it out, but at this point I don't plan on renaming the league.

1970 Kellogg Cup Playoffs; Knockout Round
Red Wing Chiefs vs Osseo Screaming Eagles
It was a high scoring affair at Pottery Pond Park as the Eagles came to town with their high flying attack. Red Wing stuck with Osseo's attacks, keeping the score within two at all times. The clock wore on and Osseo continued to find the back of the net, ending the game up one by a final score of 5-4.
Bloomington West Terriers vs Marshall Pheasants
Marshall was excited for their first playoff game, but that excitement faded quickly as they were manhandled by the Terriers in front of 2,500 fans at the Bloomington Ice Garden. West would go on to outshoot the Pheasants 41-13 and win by a score of 5-0.
Luverne Flying Dutchmen vs Rochester Robins
The Dutchmen squared off against the Robins and you could tell this one was going to be close from the get go, with both teams evenly matched. Rochester struck first, but Luverne would tie it midway through the third. Overtime began, and it was still anyone's game. The two went back and forth, until a Luverne shot took a bounce off the skate of a defenseman and into the net, sending the Flying Dutchmen to the next round.
Twin Cities Vulcans vs Mason City Musicians
This was a hard fought, defensive battle. The Vulcans began to show their superiority in the third as the Musicians began to gas out. The Vulcans were buzzing, breaking through with about 5 minutes to go and then adding another less than a minute later to make their lead 2-0. The clock would expire with the score still at 2-0, sending the Vulcans to the next round.
Duluth Voyageurs vs Fergus Falls Cyclones
Things started out as everyone expected, with Duluth carrying play in the first and leading 2-0 after 1. But things switched in the second, with Fergus Falls finally waking up and playing the type of hockey that got them here. They brought the score to 2-1 at the end of the second, and were looking very good. They kept that play up in the third, wearing out the Voyageurs and finding the back of the net three times to take a 4-2 lead, which would end up being the final score, sending the Cyclones onward.
Superior Lakers vs Fargo Titans
Superior was not happy about their seeding, claiming they had earned the right to not play in the knockout round. The Lakers came out determined to make a point, and Fargo was stuck in the tracks. Superior proceeded to run straight through the Titans, scoring four times and allowing zero against, heading into the next round with a head of steam.
Baudette Walleye vs Eveleth Redbirds
It was a battle way up north on Lake of the Woods between the Walleye and the Redbirds. Baudette has high hopes of getting back to the Super Series, and perhaps they were looking past Eveleth, who surprised the Walleye by taking a two goal lead in the first. Baudette answered back early in the third, giving them a spark, but the Birds added a cushion to their lead on a breakaway with 7:29 to go. That would prove to be the final goal of the game, giving Eveleth the upset victory.
Thief River Falls Railers vs Little Falls Pilots
Thief and Little Falls were neck and neck all game long, with the Railers taking the lead only for the Pilots to tie it up 49 seconds later. Then the Pilots taking the lead and the Railers tying it 78 seconds later. Shots were tied at 27 each and the score was tied at 2 when the final horn sounded, sending us to overtime. A few minutes into OT, Little Falls was called for tripping, giving the Railers a powerplay. Thief set up in the zone, looking for a shot. The puck was sent to a player on the hash mark up against the boards. He walked in, making a move to get past a Pilot, and ripped a shot from the slot that the goalie had no chance at, sending the over 3,000 in attendance into mayhem as the Railers advance.

Teams so far this postseason are undefeated wearing orange and purple. Is this a trend?

Anybody know why the Flying Dutchmen played the Musicians and the Vulcans played the Robins (when they were set to play different opponents in the first round?)

Got it...thank you.
You KNOW I am simply jazzed for my Brewers FINALLY winning the Valley League title, and at my Lakers for making a strong statement in the Knockout Round! First order of business is for the Crew to beat the Govs, and for the Lakers to pull off the upset over the Giants...I've got a REALLY good feeling about these playoffs.

1970 Kellogg Cup Playoffs; First Round Day 1
Minneapolis Millers vs Osseo Screaming Eagles
The Mighty Millers let their presence be felt early, finding the back of the net just 4 minutes in, and dominating the rest of the first, nearly adding to their lead a couple of times. Osseo bounced back in the second though, coming out and playing with the Millers instead of a step behind like in the first. Minneapolis managed to get one past the Eagles goalie to take a 2 goal lead, but Osseo would respond by the end of the second to bring it back to within one. The third was more like the first, with the Millers controlling the flow of play, taking back a 2 goal lead. They would go on to finish the game still up 3-1, sending them to the second round.
Rochester Mustangs vs Sioux City Shockers
Things started pretty even, but things took a turn when a Shocker was called for checking from behind, getting a 5 minute major on which the Mustangs took a 2-0 lead. Rochester added a third in the last minute of the first, building a 3-0 lead after 1. The Stangs added to their lead once more in the third to all but secure the victory. The Shockers managed to avoid the shutout, but they still had their season ended by a score of 4-1.
Sioux Falls Packers vs Bloomington West Terriers
Oh no, not again! For the fourth season in a row, the Sioux Falls Packers have choked in the first round of the playoffs on home ice. Edina, St. Cloud, Northfield, and now Bloomington West have all shocked the Packers in the slaughterhouse, an arena notoriously hard for visitors to play in during the regular season. The Terriers got on the board first, but the Hogs tied it up. The game was tied at one apiece at the end of regulation so we went to overtime where the Terriers were able to capitalize on a 3 on 1 to advance to the second round.
New Ulm Bavarians vs Mankato Moose
It was a high scoring affair between these Blue Earth rivals, with both teams finding the back of the net four times each by the end of regulation. Overtime started and Mankato was sent to the box shortly after for tripping, giving New Ulm their 5th powerplay chance of the game, they were 1-4 to this point. The Bavarians set up, passing the puck up near the point until a defenseman made a hard pass to the slot where the center was there to redirect it past the goalie and into the net, sending New Ulm onwards.
Roseau Stars vs Fergus Falls Cyclones
The Clones walked into arguably the hardest place to play in all of the MAHL, the Roseau Memorial Arena. The Green Army was loud as usual, giving the Stars all the help they could. Roseau jumped out to a 2 goal lead after the first, looking well on their way to keeping the perfect home season intact. Fergus snuck one past the Stars keeper midway through the second to give them hope, but Roseau turned around and got their two goal lead back just 2 minutes later. The third period was scoreless, with the Stars just trying to kill the clock. It worked as the horn sounded, sending the Stars to the second round.
East Grand Forks Pointers vs St. Cloud Bearcats
The first period belonged to the visitors, with the Bearcats having an explosive period, leading 3-1 after 1. Things seemed to cool off inexplicably for the Cats after the first though, as the Pointers took the reigns and didn't look back. Although they were still trailing after 2, they brought the deficit to within one and thoroughly outplayed the Bearcats, outshooting them 14-3. The Bearcats wall finally cracked in the third, with EGF finding the twine twice, managing to take the lead for the first time of the game. The horn sounded, capping off the Pointers comeback victory, and sending St. Cloud home.
Thunder Bay Giants vs Superior Lakers
It was a Lake Superior League showdown between this years champs and last years champs. It was a battle from the beginning, with both teams giving it their all. We would end regulation the Giants and Lakers deadlocked at 2, so we went to OT. Time rolled on in overtime, still scoreless despite chances form both sides. The Giants broke out of their zone with 4 minutes left, moving it into the offensive zone with speed. The puck carrier blew past a defender, creating a 2 on one. He looked pass, but the defender was covering it, so he ripped a shot from the slot low glove side, beating the goalie causing the Fort William Gardens to erupt as the Giants advance with a 3-2 overtime win over Superior.
Steinbach Barbarians vs Virginia Royals
Steinbach is coming off their best season since 1958 and has high expectations, but the Royals are a pesky bunch that have been flying a bit under the radar this season.Virginia got things started, but the Barbarians would find themselves in the lead 2-1 after the first. Virginia would open things up in the second, popping in a pair of goals while Steinbach netted one themselves, ending the second tied 3-3. Virginia was called for interference early in the third, giving the Barbarians a prime opportunity to take back the lead, but things took a turn when a pass from d to d was picked off by a Royal who was all alone on a breakaway, burying the puck under the crossbar to give Virginia the lead while a man down. The clock continued to roll, becoming Steinbach's enemy. The Barbs pulled their goalie in desperation. They set up and managed to come as close as hitting the post, but it would not go. Virginia gained control and was able to get it down ice and into the open net, putting the final nail in Steinbach's coffin, sending the Royals to the second round with an upset victory.
