Re: AltLiga Season 2023-24

We're officially in the playoffs, with a VERY slim chance at the #1 seed (we would need to win out, need Atlético Barcelona to win out, and have Joburg City 94 lose out, AND have more points than both those teams). So we're going to focus on locking up the two seed first. And we start that with a match in Chile against CD Andes. We're going to be in the standard main kits, and are featuring our top defender, Dan Burn! #TheGoldStandard

Re: AltLiga Season 2023-24

Well, it only took a couple of months, but we finally have a GEO Cup winner - and that's us. It was a massacre of Andes in our final regular season home match of the season, scoring 5 goals against their none to a dominating win. Ollie Watkins put in 2, and James Ward-Prowse, Bruno Guimaraes, and Jean-Phillipe Mateta each scored 1 of their own. We need just one more win to lock up the top spot on the table and hopefully a prize (there has to be a prize, right? It seems fitting), but we'll have to get a win on the road in our final two matches. The first of the final two is against Berlin, who needs a win this week to even have a chance of staying alive. Featuring for this match is D Rayan Ait-Nouri, who assisted on a goal, won a tackle, and drew a penalty kick in the short time he played last match. We're changing the lineup slightly, switching to a 4-4-2 to prevent Berlin from getting close. #StayGold

Re: AltLiga Season 2023-24

Clinched top seed: Joburg City 94

Clinched playoff spot: Eye of the Sun, Atlético Barcelona, Club de Ragatas do Independencia, Amsterdam KVV, CD Andes

In with win: 1. VfV 1158 Munich, Sydney Harbour FC
(note: Munich was in the "in with win" group last week. However, that didn't factor in a potential three way tie including Olympique de Bastille)

In with win, loss from Sydney Harbour FC and points tiebreaker: Olympique de Bastille
(if Sydney Harbour FC and 1. VfV 1158 Munich lose, then top two points scorers will get the playoff spots)

Eliminated: Berlin 1871, Inter Istanbul

Relegation (if necessary):
2 of London Public FC, IFK Stockholm, FC Tokyo Sakura, FC Alfa Roma. Tiebreakers are a mess to type out, so... just... we'll see.

Definitely "relegated": St. Mungo FC

Re: AltLiga Season 2023-24

After an absolutely abysmal start to the year, the Golden Lions of Joburg narrowly beat Berlin to claim the shield as the league's best team before the playoffs. It was a defensive masterclass by Berlin's goalkeeper Jose Sa, but F Ollie Watkins was able to put a single shot past him for an agonizingly close win. Now for the final week of the season, we travel to the land of the rising sun to play our final away match of the year against Tokyo Sakura. They're fighting to stay up for next year, while we have nothing to lose except for our pride. Our final featured player before the playoffs is reliable midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, who assisted once with one cross and once chance created to jump start the offense. #StayGold

Re: AltLiga Season 2023-24

Atlético could've clinched a home playoff game with a win last week, but lost to Amsterdam to fall down to a tie for 3rd instead of a tie for 2nd (although we're still the 3rd seed overall). A lot can still change as we come into the final week of the season, as we could still (theoretically) finish anywhere between 2nd and 5th, with any number of potential first-round opponents up in the air. One of those teams is Sydney Harbour FC, who are currently sitting in 7th and have yet to officially clinch a playoff spot, so it won't be easy. We'll once again look to goaltender Đorđe Petrović, who, despite allowing the only goal of the game last week, also made two strong saves to keep the team in it.

Re: AltLiga Season 2023-24

Claiming the top spot is Joburg City 94.

In a three way tie for 2nd was Atlético Barcelona, Club de Ragatas do Independencia, and Eye of the Sun FC. The regular season points total was the tiebreaker, with Eye of the Sun FC getting the 2 seed at 2609.75 points, Club de Ragatas do Independencia getting the 3 seed at 2466.75 points, and Atlético Barcelona getting the 4 seed at 2448.75 points.

The 5 seed goes to Amsterdam KVV.

The 6 seed is 1. VfV 1158 Munich's.

The 7 seed was a tie between Sydney Harbour FC and CD Andes. They split the regular season series, so it came to points. CD Andes got the 7 seed with 2464.50 points, with Sydney getting the 8 seed at 2331.50 points.

In 9th was Olympique de Bastille. The 10th team was Berlin 1871. In 11th was Inter Istanbul. 12th went to IFK Stockholm. FC Tokyo Sakura and London Public FC tied, but FC Tokyo Sakura finished in 13th, just out of the relegation zone via a season sweep of London Public FC, who falls to 14th in the relegation zone. Also in the relegation zone is 15th finisher FC Alfa Roma and 16th finisher St. Mungo FC.

Your first round playoff matchups are as follows.

8. Sydney Harbour FC @ 1. Joburg City 94 (regular season split)
7. CD Andes @ 2. Eye of the Sun FC (regular season Eye of the Sun FC 2-0)
6. 1. VfV 1158 Munich @ 3. Club de Ragatas do Independencia (regular season split)
5. Amsterdam KVV @ 4. Atlético Barcelona (regular season split)

Re: AltLiga Season 2023-24

In a double matchweek to end the regular season with the shield all locked up, we sent Tokyo packing by scoring 6 goals on them, topping our points total back in matchweek 7. As impressive as that might be, all of what happened before is unfortunately meaningless because now it's time for the playoffs. We will host the opening round of the postseason against Sydney Harbour, who got crushed by Atletico on their way into the playoffs via tiebreaker. They'll not be easy competition, so we'll give them a good match. Jumping for joy this week is F Jean-Philippe Mateta, who scored 4 goals past Neto to take us over the top and them some. #StayGold

Re: AltLiga Season 2023-24

Atlético ended the season on a high note against Sydney, and thanks to the win, we'll officially get to play at least one more game at Camp Vell this season. We've got a tough matchup in round one, as we'll be hosting Amsterdam KVV, who has been riding high as of late, including beating us just two weeks ago. With everything on the line from here on out, we'll need our top players to be on point this week. Our star player this year was none other than F Son Heung-Min, who netted 15 goals on the regular season and assisted on 9 more.

Re: AltLiga Season 2023-24

Round one of the playoffs saw Atlético advance with the week's top offense and the week's top defense, as we advance past Amsterdam with a dominant win. Unfortunately, we now have to hit the road, as we travel to Cairo for a matchup against Eye of the Sun FC. Eye are coming off a strong win of their own against CD Andes, and will be hungry to perform well in front of their home fans once again. With a spot in the final on the line, we'll be looking to F Julián Álvarez, who didn't get on the scoresheet this past week, but did plenty of that during the regular season, with 9 goals and 11 assists.

Re: AltLiga Season 2023-24

We managed to escape the first round in a low scoring affair against Sydney, where M Bruno G. put the lone goal past Bernd Leno to advance to the semifinals. Our opponent is Munich, who upset Independencia in dominating fashion. They're coming in hot into the Calabash, so we'll need to play our absolute best if we want to get to the finals. We'll be putting our trust in GK Jordan Pickford, who picked up his 12th clean sheet on the year while blocking 4 shots from the Harbour. #StayGold
