Re: Eastern Canada Hockey Organization

1951 Design Changes
Charlottetown Monarchs

The Monarchs have made some modifications to their branding. They have updated the crown, which now features only a C, resembling a jewel on the front of the crown. Additionally, they have darkened their shade of red.

The uniforms have not been altered significantly, with the new shade of red replacing the previous one in all applications.

Comments and criticisms are appreciated, as are questions about the ECHO and its world. Also, this is your last chance to submit prospects, as I will begin constructing the draft class over the weekend.

Re: Eastern Canada Hockey Organization

I love the update on the Monarchs logo. I have a feeling this one will stick around for a long time.

Re: Eastern Canada Hockey Organization

1951 Retirements

HC Finn Barclay
Teams: Halifax Highlanders HC (1945-1951)
Record: 189-123-6
Playoff Record: 22-15
Sound Cups: 3 (1948, 1950, 1951)

Barclay had been in charge of this Halifax team for a decade in the Atlantic Hockey League, leading them to several championships. The ECHO was a challenge for Barclay and the Highlanders at first, but after a couple of years, it started to click again as Barclay and new starting goalie Alex Davis helped lead Halifax to 3 Sound Cups in 4 seasons. Barclay’s health had been declining over the past few seasons, and with many championships in his bag and not much more to achieve, the veteran head coach decided to call it quits after a successful head coaching career.

G Matthew Phillips
Teams: Moncton Generals (1945-51)
Sound Cups: 0
Awards: None

Phillips was a good goalie for the Generals, starting as their primary goalie when they entered the ECHO in 1945. While he was not on the level of goalies like Alex Davis and Nicolas Deschênes, he left his mark on the team that had recruited him 15 years ago. Phillips will probably be remembered more for the few years when he had to start in the net for every game due to the Generals not giving him more support than for his performance. Towards the end of his career, Phillips was relegated to a backup, sometimes third string, as Emmett O’Leary rose to be Moncton’s new man in the net.

Other Notable Retirements

C Michael Fraser
Teams: HFX (1945-47), MTB (1947-50), FRE (1950-51)
D Brian Lee
Teams: MTB (1945-50), TRV (1950-51)
W Gavin Cook
Teams: QUE (1945-51)
C Gilles Osse
Teams: OTT (1945-51)

Re: Eastern Canada Hockey Organization

If you don't mind, I have a question about the ECHO universe: What are the teams in the Ontario Elite Hockey League called? Also, are there any more semi pro hockey leagues in this universe? Or is it too early to reveal such things without spoiling anything?

The OEHL team line-up as of the 1951 offseason is as follows:
Toronto Thunderbirds
Hamilton Sabres
Niagara Navigators
Kitchener Komets
Brampton Bulls
Oshawa Ospreys
Barrie Blizzard
Kingston Clippers
Belleville Bears
Peterborough Patriots
London Crusaders (expansion)
Guelph Guardians (expansion)

As for your other question, I can't respond to that one as I don't want to back myself into a corner by giving you an answer and have to retcon things down the line.

Re: Eastern Canada Hockey Organization

1951 Coaching Changes

After the retirement of their legendary head coach, Finn Barclay, the Halifax Highlanders needed a new coach. After conducting several interviews over a few weeks, team owner Riley McCullough ultimately chose Lachlan Sinclair, the former head coach of the University of Nova Scotia hockey team, to become the new head coach of the Highlanders.

The Quebec Reds missed out on the playoffs after reaching the Sound Cup Finals, and as a result, head coach Isaac Roth was dismissed from his position. After conducting an extended search for a replacement, the team announced the hiring of Gabriel Lavoie as their new head coach. Lavoie had previously been the head coach of the Sherbrooke Saints in the Quebec Junior Hockey League.

When Ethan Griffiths became the temporary owner of the Saint John Admirals, he quickly decided to let go of head coach Michael Donovan. Griffiths appointed Tommy Reynolds as the new head coach of the Admirals despite his lack of experience as a coach.

Let me know what you think of these coaching changes. Comments and criticisms are welcome.

Re: Eastern Canada Hockey Organization

1951 ECHO Draft

Round 1

1. FRE | G Victor Carbonneau | St-Hyacinthe, QC - Kingsfan11
With the first overall pick, the Stars wasted no time taking the man they believed would be their goalie of the future, Victor Carbonneau. Carbonneau will probably be put into the starting role immediately due to the lack of great competition in the net in Fredericton.

2. TRV | D Dawson Newton | Charlottetown, PEI - Burmy87
Trois-Rivières would use their first-round pick on the 6'2 defenseman in Dawson Newton, who they expect will be part of their defensive unit as a rookie.

3. STJ | W Andrew Postl | Mushaboom, NS - Dan O'Mac
The Admirals take the oldest of the Postl triplets with their 1st round pick, who should improve their depth on the wing.

4. QUE | C Hector Richard | Bonaventure, QC - DireBear
Quebec looked to improve its center depth and, with their 1st round pick, selected the proud Acadian center, Hector Richard. He should start his rookie season as a 3rd line center behind Alex Fortin and Lachlan Johnston but could eventually take over as the 2nd line center.

5. MTB | W Ernest Kessler | Ottawa, ON - DireBear
The Beavers would use their 1st round pick on winger Ernest Kessler, whose ability to be a clutch player and decent skills will help them get back to being a winning team.

6. CHA | C Timmy Overton | Punkeydoodles Corners, ON - Dan O'Mac
Needing some center depth badly, the Monarchs would select center Timmy Overton with their first-round pick. Overton's abilities as a skater will be of great use to a retooling Charlottetown team.

7. OTT | G Anthony Brown | Ottawa, ON - FC MacBeth
The Knights were targeting both highly rated hometown players with their pick and are glad to be at least able to take one of them in goaltender Anthony Brown. Brown should slot behind the Knights goalie tandem of Tom Mullings and David Moreau in the depth chart, but it wouldn't be far-fetched to see Brown in net for some games next season.

8. MON | D Bartholomé Carpentier | Sherbrooke, QC - DireBear
Moncton would select the massive, hard-hitting defenseman in Bartholomé Carpentier with their 1st round pick. Carpentier's tendency to use his body to stop the puck from getting to the net will be a great asset for the Generals.

9. MTM | W Edward Cho | Thetford Mines, QC - idm
The Métros would select the 2nd best winger in the draft class, Edward Cho, with the penultimate pick of the first round. Cho's physicality and excellent shot will significantly benefit the Métros as they try to reclaim the Sound Cup.

10. HFX | C Pierre Tremblay | Quebec City, QC - Kingsfan11
With the last pick of the 1st round, Halifax would take dynamic playmaking center Pierre Tremblay, who should start as a depth center but could be an excellent replacement for the aging Jermaine Thompson down the line.

Round 2

The second round would see a flurry of wingers be selected, including the hometown kid in Noah Boyd being selected by the Admirals and Quebec taking the youngest Postl triplet in Chris Postl. Of course, let's not forget the various defensemen being taken, including the goon in Vincent Lambton going to Ottawa and the towering Tyler Thompson getting taken by Trois-Rivières.

11. FRE | W Jacques Dubois | Montreal, QC - Kingsfan11
12. TRV | D Tyler Thompson | Ottawa, ON - Kingsfan11
13. STJ | W Noah Boyd | Saint John, NB - Burmy87
14. QUE | W Chris Postl | Mushaboom, NS - Dan O'Mac
15. MTB | C Jeff Finnegan | Saint-Louis-du-Ha-Ha!, QC - idm
16. CHA | W Alex Yamaoka | Laval, QC - idm
17. OTT | D Vincent Lambton | Sydney Mines, NS - Burmy87
18. MON | W Terry Gemmill | Windsor, ON - FC MacBeth
19. MTM | W Michael Gray | Kitchener, ON - FC MacBeth
20. HFX | D Adelard Deraspe | Sorel, QC - Burmy87

Round 3

Round 3 would start with three consecutive defensemen going off the board, with Jean Tremblay to Fredericton, Tom MacDonald to Trois-Rivières and Dewey Nichols to Saint John. Quebec would then take the middle Postl triplet in the center, Bobby Postl, to add to his brother Chris. The Beavers would add a center in Hank Rodriguez, and then Charlottetown and Ottawa would take back-to-back wingers. Moncton would return with a center in Michael Vanier, but then the Métros and Highlanders would each take wingers to end the round.

21. FRE | D Jean Tremblay | Saguenay, QC - DireBear
22. TRV | D Tom MacDonald | Quebec City, QC - Kingsfan11
23. STJ | D Dewey Nichols | Beaver Bank, NS - idm
24. QUE | C Bobby Postl | Mushaboom, NS - Dan O'Mac
25. MTB | C Hank Rodriguez | Brossard, QC - idm
26. CHA | W Octave Marcotte | Port-Alfred, QC - Burmy87
27. OTT | W James Martin | Sydney, NS - DireBear
28. MON | C Michael Vanier | Gatineau, QC - Burmy87
29. MTM | W Frank Wilson | Halifax, NS - Kingsfan11
30. HFX | W Calvin Staples | St. John’s, NL - Burmy87

Round 4
Fredericton would open the final round by selecting another defenseman, then a few picks later, the 2nd goalie would be taken when Saint John would select Alain Lévesque. Quebec and the Beavers reinforced their center depth, Ottawa, Moncton, and the Métros would take defensemen, and Halifax would end the inaugural ECHO draft by taking center Andre Preston.

31. FRE | D Darby Averill | Goobies, NL - Dan O'Mac
32. TRV | C Bobby Johnson | Ottawa, ON - Kingsfan11
33. STJ | G Alain Lévesque | Quebec City, QC - Burmy87
34. QUE | C Bill Thompson | Ottawa, ON - Kingsfan11
35. MTB | C Maverick Gauvin | Joliette, QC - Burmy87
36. CHA | W Pierre Martin | Quebec City, QC - Kingsfan11
37. OTT | D John Smith | Halifax, NS - Kingsfan11
38. MON | D Leonard Lefèvre | Sherbrooke, QC - FC MacBeth
39. MTM | D Joseph Smithers | St. John’s, NL - Kingsfan11
40. HFX | C Andre Preston | Quispamsis, NB - Burmy87

Let me know what you think of the draft. Comments and criticisms are appreciated.

Re: Eastern Canada Hockey Organization

With a new coach and draft picks, I can see Halifax Highlanders staying in playoff contender mode for a little longer.

Charlottetown would only make on re-signing as they would give a new 2-year deal to defenseman Dominic Wilson.
