Re: The American Football League

Probably going with the Cleveland Crows, though if New York gets a team, I'll make the jump.

Re: The American Football League

I think the Rivermen are my favorite but I'll be a neutral fan for now - if a team catches my eye (or if Charlotte gets one) then I'll support them.

Re: The American Football League

1950 Season Preview

1950 Schedule:
The 6 teams will play a total of 10 games against one another over the course of 11 weeks, playing each team once at home and once on the road. Each team will be awarded 1 bye week, which will be in either week 5, 7 or 8. With the exception of the Labor Day and championship games, each game will be played on a Sunday at noon. The top 2 teams in the league standings will play each other for the AFL Championship Game, to be played in the higher ranked team’s stadium. For at least this year, the Championship game will be played on Thanksgiving to attract as many attendees as possible.
Important Events:
September 3, 1950: Inaugural game - TRI @ CIN
September 4, 1950: Labor Day game - CLE @ DET
October 1, 1950: Chicago, Detroit bye
October 15, 1950: Columbus, Tri-Cities bye
October 22, 1950: Cincinnati Cleveland bye
November 12, 1950: Final Week of Season
November 23, 1950: Inaugural AFL Championship Game

Preseason Power Rankings:
(Note these won't have the normal details since it's both the first season and I've already discussed the teams. Next year it'll be changed)

1 - Chicago Hogs

Players to Watch:
QB Alfred Walton
WR Nicholas Kramer
TE Glenn Chambers
DL Leslie Black
DL Joel Valentine
LB Douglas Marks

2 - Tri-Cities Hawks

Players to Watch:
QB Gilbert Clay
RB Herman Gibbons
WR Stuart Kane
DL Ralph Rogers
LB Wallace Avery
DB Oscar Blankenship

3 - Detroit Knights

Players to Watch:
QB Roy Woodward
WR George Payne
WR Lloyd Lawson
DL James Sellers
LB Jerry Flowers
DB Johnathan Hobbs

4 - Cincinnati Rivermen

Players to Watch:
QB Lee Christian
RB Elmer Carson
LB Jim Norman
DB Jim Farmer
DB Albert O’Connell
S Tom Silva

5 - Cleveland Crows

Players to Watch:

DL Leon Costa
DL Glen Conrad
DB Jerry Pruitt
DB Nicholas Lamb

6 - Columbus Buckeyes

Players to Watch:
RB Martin Quinn
WR Tony Carroll
TE Ronnie May
LB Christopher Carney
DB Gilbert Ferrell
S Terry Carpenter

My Predictions:

Chicago 8-2 - x
Detroit 7-3 - x
Tri-Cities 7-3
Cincinnati 4-6
Cleveland 3-7
Columbus 1-9

Inaugural AFL Championship Game:
Chicago over Detroit

Chicago is the team to beat this year, and I believe Detroit will get their act together and narrowly edge out Tri-Cities to play the Hogs in the Championship Game. However, the Hogs will get the best of the Knights and take home the AFL’s first title.

Week 1 Preview:
SEP 3: TRI (0-0) @ CIN (0-0)
SEP 3: CHI (0-0) @ CLB (0-0)
SEP 4 (Labor Day): CLE (0-0) @ DET (0-0)

Any predictions on who will take the first AFL Championship? Week 1 will be out sometime tomorrow!

Re: The American Football League

Cincinnati Rivermen 13 vs. Tri-Cities Hawks 34
Q1:
0-7: TRI RTD - RB Herman Gibbons (1)
Q2:
0-10: TRI FG - K Gene Fitzpatrick (1)
0-17: TRI PTD - QB Gilbert Clay (1) > WR Stuart Kane (1)
3-17: CIN FG - K Bert Hubbard (1)
Q3:
3-20: TRI FG - K Gene Fitzpatrick (2)
Q4:
6-20: CIN FG - K Bert Hubbard (2)
6-27: TRI PTD - QB Gilbert Clay (2) > WR Stuart Kane (2)
6-34: TRI PTD - QB Gilbert Clay (3) > WR John McLean (1)
13-34: CIN RTD - RB Elmer Carson (1)

The first ever AFL really wasn’t that much of a game to watch, dominated by the Hawk’s high-flying offense
Tri-Cities RB Herman Gibbons became the first player to score in the AFL, cutting his way up the middle from 3 yards out.
The Hawks’ running game wasn’t the focal point, instead focusing on the passing attack of QB Gilbert Clay and his tandem of receivers, tossing 2 TD’s to WR Stuart Kane and the other to WR John McLean.
Cincinnati couldn’t get anything going until it was too late, only scoring their first TD late in the 4th when the game was already decided.

Columbus Buckeyes 19 vs. Chicago Hogs 24
Q1:
0-7: CHI RTD - Johnnie Hendrix (1)
Q2:
0-10: CHI FG - K Freddie Donnelly (1)
0-17: CHI PTD - QB Alfred Walton (1) > WR Nicholas Kramer (1)
0-24: CHI DTD FUM - DB Tommy Lane (1)
3-24: CLB FG - K Darrell Hoffman (1)
Q3:
10-24: CLB RTD - RB Martin Quinn (1)
12-24: CLB SFY- DL Chester Slater
19-24: CLB RTD - RB Martin Quinn (2)

Chicago got out to a hot start to the year, scoring 24 unanswered points to begin the first half.
The Hogs nearly got a point in every way, with 2 offensive TD’s from RB Johnnie Hendrix and QB Alfred Walton, in addition to a fumble recovery TD by DB Tommy Lane.
Columbus caught Chicago sleeping in the second half, putting together a rally on the legs of RB Martin Quinn.
Unfortunately for anyone wanting an upset in the first week, the Hogs’ defense held in the last minutes and Chicago narrowly got the win.

Detroit Knights 19 vs. Cleveland Crows 10
Q1:
3-0: DET FG - K David McGinnis (1)
Q2:
6-0: DET FG - K David McGinnis (2)
6-3: CLE FG - K Daniel Simon (1)
Q3:
13-3: DET PTD - QB Roy Woodward (1) > WR George Payne (1)
16-3: DET FG - K David McGinnis (3)
Q4:
16-10: CLE PTD - QB Ray Hoffman (1) > WR Lonnie Ware (1)
19-10: DET FG - K David McGinnis (4)

The Labor Day game wasn’t the way Detroit wanted, but they still won in the end and were the only home team to win this week.
The Knights’ offense wasn’t producing like they wanted to, but K David McGinnis saved Detroit’s day by going 4/4 on field goals, being the difference over the Crows.
The Crows finally got some momentum going in the 4th, holding the Knights scoreless through the quarter and making it a game off a QB Ray Hoffman touchdown to WR Lonnie Ware.
Cleveland had a chance to go up by a point in the 4th, but an INT by the Knight’s DB Johnathan Hobbs set Detroit up in prime position to kick the deciding field goal.

Players of the Week:
OFF: TRI QB Gilbert Clay - 288 Passing Yards, 3 TD
DEF: CHI DB Tommy Lane - 1 Fumble Recovery, 1 TD
SPE: DET K David McGinnis - 4/4 Field Goals, 1/1 XP

Injuries:
CHI DL Warren Pierson - 9 Weeks
CLE OL Herbert Jensen - Season

Standings:
Chicago 1-0
Detroit 1-0
Tri-Cities 1-0
Cincinnati 0-1
Cleveland 0-1
Columbus 0-1

Power Rankings:
1: Chicago =
2: Tri-Cities +1
3: Detroit -1
4: Cincinnati =
5: Cleveland =
6: Columbus =

Week 2 Preview:
SEP 10: CIN (0-1) @ CHI (1-0)
SEP 10: DET (1-0) @ TRI (1-0)
SEP 10: CLE (0-1) @ CLB (0-1)
