1965 Kellogg Cup Playoffs; Knockout Round
Anoka Warriors vs White Bear Lake Braves
A defensive duel from the get go, neither team is known for their offense, and the game remained scoreless until late in the second. White Bear Lake was assessed a 5 minute major for slashing when a Brave took a good swing at a Warrior, breaking his stick in the process. Anoka was able to capitalize on the powerplay chance, breaking the deadlock. That lone goal would prove to be the only score of the game as the Warriors advance in their first playoff appearance.
St. Cloud Bearcats vs St. Cloud Storm
The first ever playoff meeting between these cross town rivals was the talk of the town for the week leading up to the game. St. Cloud is still very much a Bearcat town, but the Storm are beginning to grow in popularity, especially in the North West part of town, near Waite Park. The bleachers were packed on the shores of Lake George as the Cats came out and lit the lamp twice in the opening frame. The Storm bounced back in the second, getting a couple good chances, but they were unable to capitalize. The Bearcats pulled away early in the third thanks to a poor line change that led to a breakaway goal, giving them a 3-0 lead. They would hold on and end their rivals first taste of the post season.
Mankato Moose vs Red Wing Chiefs
Mankato came out sloppy, missing passes and allowing the Chiefs to build momentum which they converted into a goal midway through the first. The goal seemed to give Mankato a wake up call as they picked up the pace and tied things before the end of the period. The second was scoreless, but the Moose owned possession and wore down the Red Wing defenders. Mankato came out for the third looking much fresher than the Chiefs and they netted two quick goals to take a 3-1 lead which would hold until the final horn, sending Mankato onward and the Chiefs home.
Rochester Robins vs St. Peter Governors
The Robins playoff woes continue as they were upset on home ice by the newcomers from St. Peter 3-1. The Governors speed was more than Rochester had anticipated, and they were able to take a commanding 3-0 lead. Rochester made a late comeback attempt, finally getting on the board with just under 5 minutes remaining, but it was too little too late as the Govs knock off the Robins.
Let me know what you think, comments are appreciated!

I never thought of seeing New Ulm and St. Peter together. I'm rooting for both of them.
Also, I'm jumping on the Vols bandwagon as I like the branding on the jerseys.
Mind if you can make me a sig for the Vols and the Governors? Here ya go!
6.5.0
Thanks!

It's kinda weird not seeing the Voyageurs in the top of the rankings. Here's hoping we can pull off an upset or two!
Winnipeg will be very tough, but the Monarchs seem to always trip over themselves in the playoffs while Le Bleus tend to exceed expectations so anything is possible!

Let's go Govs! Let's go beat Brainerd!

1. At long last, my Brewers are back in the playoffs! I'm just about ready for 'em to pull a '56 Austin now (and it starts with the Mighty Millers!)
2. Nice to see three of the four expansion teams make the playoffs this year (and also to see the St. Cloud Storm clinch their first-ever playoff berth). This is certainly a BOOM period for the league as far as talent is concerned.
3. About what months do the regular season and Kellogg Cup playoffs take place? Because some HUGE announcements out east which would greatly shape the future of the MAHL and get more eyes on it coast-to-coast are about to come (the first of 'em being on March 11, 1965)

The MAHL regular season begins in early November, once the ice gets thick enough, and goes until late February. The Playoffs begin in late February/early March (depending on weather canceling games during the regular season postponing the playoffs).

Gotcha...thank you.
So as not to steal your thunder on any announcements, I'm going to DM you the next question I have.

BREAKING NEWS - MARCH 11, 1965 (Posted with Section30's permission)
NHL president Clarence Campbell has announced that the league will expand by six teams for the 1967-68 season, forming a second division opposite the "Original Six." San Francisco-Oakland, Vancouver, Los Angeles and St. Louis have been mentioned as four frontrunners to land expansion teams, with numerous other major cities expected to apply for expansion teams.
Shortly after Campbell's announcement, a group consisting of Walter Bush, Jr., Robert Ridder, John Driscoll and six other men announced that they were submitting a bid to have Minneapolis-St. Paul land one of the six expansion teams. Mindful of the MAHL's strong history, following and culture, they trusted that the more Campbell knew about the league and saw it firsthand, the more likely he was to grant their bid.
Therefore, the group has invited Campbell to attend the 1965 Kellogg Cup Final, as well as one game from each member MAHL league in the 1965-66 season, in hopes that come next February, the MAHL experience will prove key in bringing the NHL to the State of Hockey.

1965 Kellogg Cup Playoffs; First Round Day 1
St. Paul Saints vs Anoka Warriors
The Saints marched into the first round as the top seed in the south and proved their worth by ending Anoka's inaugural season with a 3-1 victory. St. Paul was just too dominant for the Warriors as they out shot their opponents 41-13.
Rochester Mustangs vs New Ulm Bavarians
The rivalry was reborn in this match between the Mustangs and Bavarians. Now in the Blue Earth Hockey League, New Ulm came into this match with a 2-0 record in the playoffs against Rochester and were looking to make it 3-0. The Diamonds pressed the pace early, getting a couple good looks, but Rochester held strong and managed to capitalize on an odd man rush to take a 1-0 lead after 1. New Ulm kept their foot on the gas in the second though and managed to net two of their own to take a 2-1 lead heading into the final frame. Rochester managed to tie things back up early in the second thanks to a snipe from Dan Collins that beat Scheid over the glove. Overtime was required between these two rivals and things got chippy early in the extra frame after a Bavarian blind sided a Mustang, causing a line brawl that ultimately led to a Rochester power play. The Stangs set up behind the goal line, looking for an open man in the slot. Nothing was available so they fed the puck to the point where a defender fired a one time blast into the mass of bodies in front of the goal. The puck took a couple deflections and stopped on the left hash mark where a Mustang recovered it and fired it on net. The goalie could not see the puck and it found its way though his legs and into the back of the net to send Rochester to the second round.
Sioux Falls Packers vs St. Cloud Bearcats
Sioux Falls made a statement in their first playoff game, handily defeating the Bearcats by a score of 4-1 and letting the rest of the league know they are legit contenders.
Edina Cake Eaters vs Fergus Falls Cyclones
Fergus Falls went into Edina as heavy underdogs, but managed to push their playoff win streak to 5 years in a row, adding another notch to the list of Cake Eaters playoff disappointments.
Cloquet Broncos vs Crookston Kings
The top dogs in the north faced off with the Kings in what turned out to be a better game than expected. Despite the scoreline, this was actually fairly close for most of the game. The first was scoreless, and the Broncos broke the deadlock in the second, scoring the only goal of the period. Crookston managed to tie things up less than a minute into the third, shocking the Cloquet locals. The Kings and Broncos exchanged chances back and forth until Cloquet's Millen lit the lamp to give his team back the lead. For the remaining 6 minutes or so it was all Cloquet as the Kings seemed to have lost the jump in their step, allowing the Broncos to score twice more to win by a final score of 4-1.
Virginia Royals vs East Grand Forks Pointers
Virginia started off strong, taking a 2 goal lead midway through the game, but EGF picked up the pace late in the period to bring it back to within one. The Pointers controlled the flow of play for most of the third, out shooting the Royals 12-6 in the period and tying things up, forcing overtime. The first overtime came and went with little action. The second overtime began and Virginia began to build some momentum with the help of the locals who filled the Miners Memorial Building. The Royals peppered the Pointers tender, firing everything on goal until finally a rebound was loose in the slot. A Royal won the race to the puck, but instead of shooting he held onto the puck and made a move toward the far pipe. He lofted a backhand over the outstretched arm of the EGF goalie and into the net to send Virginia to the second round.
Winnipeg Monarchs vs Duluth Voyageurs
It was a battle of the bullies from north of the border against a squad of veterans who have plenty of playoff experience. In the end youth and strength prevailed as the Monarchs shut down the Duluth attack while burying two goals of their own to advance with a 2-0 shutout victory.
Ely Black Bears vs Grand Rapids Moose
This Iron Range match up had all the characteristics of the hard hitting, northern style, game. The hometown team struck first, sending the Ely locals into a frenzy, but the celebration was short lived as the Moose answered back just over a minute later. The Black Bears again broke the tie late in the second, and they scored again early in the third to add a cushion to their lead. All they had to do for the remainder of the game was hold on, and hold on they did. The Ely Black Bears stopped all of Grand Rapids' attacks, holding onto the 3-1 lead as the final horn sounded.

I know you didn't get the opportunity to respond to this when I first posted it, so here's another opportunity:

Also, in completely random news. I had to make a poster using only original artwork and lettering for my final assignment in typography. So now there is a poster for one of the biggest rivalries in the MAHL sitting in a glass case at Bemidji State University lol.
Here's the high res version
Good lord, so I really do have to take a college course to do graphic design!
Semi-jokes aside, good job, it looks great!
