Re: The New Game in Town: The World Football League

I'm loving Memphis's look, they might be my second favorite team to root for. Always was obsessed with the name Memphis Hound Dogs, all my various alternate NFL's that only exist on notepads have had it

Glad you like it so far. For 1976, the Charlotte Hornets (another real life WFL team) will come into the league, but I'm stumped on who should be the fourteenth franchise.

Love the new looks, the only problem I have is Chicago's helmet. They should switch to a black helmet, it'd fit their logo and make the helmet logo easier to see.

Fourteenth franchise-Maybe San Antonio? Or something in the Bay Area like Oakland or San Fran?

1975 WFL Schedule

Because the 1974 strike delayed the start of the NFL season till Thanksgiving, Howard Cosell began to openly sing the WFL's praises during Monday Night Football. The feud between Cosell and Pete Rozelle led to the discovery of a loophole in ABC's contract, which would allow them to carry the WFL and still keep MNF thru 1981. Unlike last year, the WFL will start in June instead of July as advised by league vice president David Dixon. Within the next five years, the WFL will shift from a midsummer kickoff to a spring kickoff by 1980.

Re: The New Game in Town: The World Football League

1975 WFL Regular Season Standings

Detroit started strong in the first four weeks, but the Wheels came off rather quickly due to injuries.

King Corcoran put up better numbers than last year to lead the Bell to a division crown.

The Gargoyles clinch a wild card spot with a much-needed win over the Orlando Thunder.

The sequel proved no better than the original for the Action as the injury bug bit LA super hard in '75.

Injuries spoiled the Hawaiians' inaugural season at the state-of-the-art Aloha Stadium.

The World Bowl Quarterfinal games will act as tiebreakers to determine the winners of the Central and Western Divisions.

Eastern Division
Philadelphia Bell 13-5
New York Gargoyles 11-7

Orlando Thunder 9-9
Jacksonville Sharks 7-11

Central Division
Birmingham Vulcans 10-8
Chicago Fire 10-8

Memphis Hound Dogs 8-10
Detroit Wheels 4-14

Western Division
Portland Chinook 10-8
Houston Texans 10-8

Los Angeles Action 8-10
Hawaiians 8-10

Playoff teams in BOLD

Playoff Schedule

World Bowl Quarterfinals
Chicago @ Birmingham
Houston @ Portland

World Bowl Semifinals
TBD @ New York

World Bowl II

Re: The New Game in Town: The World Football League

1975 WFL Playoffs

World Bowl Quarterfinals

October 11, 1975
Legion Field; Birmingham, AL

Chicago Fire 3
Birmingham Vulcans 38

The Vulcans defense held Virgil Carter and the Fire to just a measly field goal as Birmingham ran away with the game.

October 12, 1975
Civic Stadium; Portland, OR

Houston Texans 35
Portland Chinook 10

Houston took the usually rowdy Portland crowd out of the game early as the Chinook defense had no idea how to stop the Texans' elusive scrambler David Mays. A touchdown by the Chinook late in the third was too little, too late to spark a comeback as the Chinook were unable to sustain a drive for most of the game.

World Bowl Semifinals
October 18, 1975
Hofstra Stadium; Hempstead, NY

Birmingham Vulcans 13
New York Gargoyles 24

The Gargoyles' ability to control the run rendered Vulcans running back Johnny Musso ineffective by halftime.

October 19, 1975
Franklin Field; Philadelphia, PA

Houston Texans 22
Philadelphia Bell 21

King Corcoran's throwing arm cooled down too soon for the Bell to maintain their halftime lead. Meanwhile, Houston's David Mays exposed obvious cracks in the Bell's defense with under two minutes to play. Rick Eber hauled in the winning touchdown catch for the Texans. Before the final gun even sounded, Philly fans began pelting the Texans' sideline with beer cans and hot dog wrappers as the reality of the Bell's defeat began to sink in. After all, the Bell did finish the regular season with the best record in the league, but were unable to back it up when it mattered most.

World Bowl II
October 25, 1975
Hofstra Stadium; Hempstead, NY

TV Announcers: Merle Harmon and Alex Hawkins (ABC)

Houston Texans 16
New York Gargoyles 30

MVP: Joe Theismann (QB; Gargoyles)

Once again, the Gargoyles' run defense proved why they belonged among the WFL's elite in '75. Their ability to slow down David Mays' scrambling held the Texans to just one touchdown and three field goals. Quarterback Joe Theismann played well enough to attract NFL scouts hoping to lure him away as soon as the game was over. Two touchdown passes from Theismann, one to Al Young, the second to Kreg Kapitan, and an interception by former Jet John Dockery, along with three field goals by Pete Rajecki clinched the World Bowl for the Gargoyles. At the time, Hofstra Stadium sat just over 7,000, but temporary bleachers were installed to bring the capacity up a tad for the World Bowl. Even then, the 11,000 New Yorkers that actually showed up, albeit dressed for an early Halloween, couldn't wait for the clock to wind down to congratulate their heroes. Hofstra's campus police were under strict orders to keep fans from storming the field after the game, but they were no match for the inevitable stampede that would await the players right before the final gun. Compared to Ten Cent Beer Night in Cleveland the year before, Halloween in Hempstead was rather tame.

1976 Expansion

For 1976, the Charlotte Hornets and San Antonio Wings become the thirteenth and fourteenth WFL franchises respectively.

1976 Stadium Changes
- The Los Angeles Action will play their home schedule full time at Anaheim Stadium.

- The New York Gargoyles say goodbye to Hofstra Stadium and hello to the newly refurbished Yankee Stadium.

- The Detroit Wheels get a new garage in the form of the Pontiac Silverdome.
