1963 Retirements

RB Alexei Volkov - New York City, NY - Creator: Darknes
Drafted: OTT 1952 - 1st Round - 2nd Overall - (from TOR)
Teams: Ottawa Royals (1952-1962)
McCallister Cups: 4 (1954,1955,1956,1959)
Volkov will go down as one of the most overlooked stars in the league’s history. After being traded up for and taken 2nd overall by the Royals, Volkov found himself in a pass-heavy offence. The Royals’ style of play was certainly going to take away carries from Volkov, but in the end, the explosive RB was still able to escape for several 50+ yard touchdown runs. Volkov’s explosiveness helped the Royals immensely as teams had to worry about the pass and Volkov out of the backfield. He would help the Royals to their 4 titles in 6 years and 7 straight Cup appearances. With the Royals taking RB Corbyn Knight in the first round last year and a desire to spend time with his young family, Volkov has decided to settle down in Ottawa and call it a career.

Chalifoux was a consistent cornerstone on the Montreal line throughout his career. He spent almost his entire career in Montreal, having only one season in Providence when he was traded there in 1956, only to return a year later through free agency. Chalifoux loved playing for his hometown and would eventually be named team captain in 1960. Chalifoux will take the year off but is likely considering a return to a higher-up role in the Rouge organization moving forward.

Stafford’s career was highlighted with years of failing to earn respect from those around him. The Hawks initially forced him into a starting role right out of the draft, where he obviously struggled behind a suspect O-line. They then replaced him with RB Pierre LeStrange the next season. Stafford would then venture to Providence where he would also be considered “not quite enough” and was replaced by both RB Laurent Brazeau and RB Élisée Marchal in back-to-back seasons. In the end, he would finally get his footing in Buffalo in 1959 where he started to show what he could do. He would follow that up with the Offensive Player of the Year and Breakout Player of the Year awards in the 1960 season, which he spent with both the Blue Wings and Raiders. He would go on to close out his career with a McCallister Cup win in Louisville a couple of seasons later. Stafford had finally become a respected player in the league. He intends to still be involved with the NAAF following retirement.

DL Zakary Turbide - Montreal, QC

All-Stars: 6 (1954, 1955, 1957-1960)
Turbide was a fierce and competitive DL throughout his career. He always wanted to win. He got that a lot early on in his career with the Rouge including a breakout MVP performance in the 1953 McCallister Cup. He eventually got tired of the Rouge rebuild in 1957 and moved on to the Gold Stars where he would continue to create havoc. Eventually, Turbide would be traded back to Montreal where he closed out his career. Turbide is expected to venture off onto another career path moving forward.

WR Robert Lang - New Haven, CT

Lang had one of the toughest tasks in taking over the star WR spot from WR John Rivera, who had been great for years before. Lang would ultimately pull through on the task being one of the few bright spots for the team over the early 50s. He would continue to develop into a star for the Raiders, helping them to their first win in 1958. One of the best Raiders of all time was unable to finish his career on the island due to the new salary cap and would land in Montreal for a couple of more seasons. Lang isn’t sure what the future holds, but he is interested in either becoming a scout for The Gains Report or potentially move on to coaching younger kids.

WR Clyde McIntosh - Lowell, MA
Teams: Worcester Athletics (1951-1958), Boston Independents (1959-1961), Louisville Thunder (1962)

Captaincy: WOR A - 1957-1958
McIntosh was one of the few players that entered the NAAF via the Athletics being promoted from an amateur club back to a professional club in 1951. He would develop into the team’s top WR throughout his career. He helped the team reach the 1956 McCallister Cup, but could not bring it home. He eventually fell victim to the slow purge of the Athletics and was dealt to Boston in 1959. He would be a great addition for the Independents and would help them win their first title since 1950 in 1961. Then, he would play the next season with many former teammates in Louisville claiming his second straight title. McIntosh is very likely going to be involved in the league’s player council as a strong leader and highly respected player in the league.

Some look at Venegas as one of the better late-round steals in the 1952 draft. Venegas would become a touchdown machine in his career which led to 3 all-star nods. He was unable to win a championship in his career but did come close in 1956 with the Athletics. He would close out his career with a few seasons in Providence before a roller-coaster season split between the Rouge and Blue Wings.

Ronnie Elliot is the OL every team wants. He’s fierce and gives it his all every play, and then is a great goofball and motivator in the room that keeps teams in good spirits. He was quite valuable for both Buffalo and Boston with Elliot being a part of 3 championship-winning teams between the two. Elliot may have some interest in being involved in the broadcast booth with his more wild personality, but high football knowledge.

S Jumon Cobb - Toronto, ON

Cobb was a good surprise out of the 4th round in 1952. He only got to play one season in his hometown before the team moved to Kitchener. Even then, Cobb would not make the most noise as a member of the Tigers being traded to the Rouge in 1955. In Montreal, the young S would come into his own and would bring stability to the back end for the team. He eventually would have an all-star season in 1959, before he was moved to the Gold Stars for his final stint in the league.

Probably the most bizarre (fits for a Scratch prospect), Wind never got a foothold on a spot until he arrived in Indiana. However, in his first opportunity in Indiana, he got a chance to go in for an injured starter only to suffer his own season-ending injury several plays later. A very unfortunate career, but he is a champion, so he can walk away with that.

1963 Coaching Changes

The majority of the coaches around the league were sticking with their teams ahead of the 1963 season, however, many are going into this season with a short rope and could very well find themselves without a job within the next season or two. The main names to look at would be OC Levi Bray, who has failed to revamp the Raiders’ offence over the last couple of seasons and Providence Head Coach Harry Meadows, who has still been unable to get the Gold Stars over the top.

In the end, there were 3 teams that made changes this season. First, and as expected, the Halifax Mariners would make several changes in the staff. Stand-in GM Larry Larson would step back into his role with the NAAF Players Committee this season, so the team needed a new GM. They would bring on former Montreal Rouge GM Anthony Vigneault to take on the role. Vigneault was a solid GM in Montreal helping the team through the worst of its rebuilding process. He is also a scout when he isn’t in a GM role which means he certainly knows talent when he sees it. As for the coaching staff, the team would bring back DC Phillip Little, who has done well so far with the Athletics over the last couple of seasons. They would make a change at both the Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator positions. They would hire Providence’s DC Urick Wilkins as the Head Coach. Wilkins had gone to Providence to potentially take the HC job when Harry Meadows left, but the opportunity came in Halifax and he jumped on it. Wilkins is a defensive-minded coach that has winning experience from his time in Buffalo. They would hire Wayne Ball out of Atlantic State University of Mass. to be the new OC. A younger coach who has helped turn the program at Atlantic around in recent years.

Providence would be scrambling for a new DC with Wilkins’ departure. They would target former Victors’ DC Steve Pallard for the role, however, he decided to head to Buffalo after that team made the decision to move on from DC George Mitchell. Pallard preferred to be further west as well as feeling like Buffalo had lots of potential with Rookie of the Year LB Orion Carter and others. Providence would then bring Mitchell in the fill the DC void for this season as they scramble to figure things out.

1963 Re-Sign Stage

Gold Stars Reload for Another Shot at Cup Run
Over the last few seasons, the Gold Stars have slowly added many veteran pieces in an attempt to take one last shot with the core that they've had. However, after a costly fumble led to the team falling just short of the final this season, GM Allen Hutchinson has been able to convince many of those veterans to stay for one last shot. He offered out 7 1-year deals with no-trade clauses to keep some of these veterans with the team. LB Rusty McVee, DL Calias McDonough, S Shawn Jensen, RB Marcus Devonshire, TE Micheal Bowman III, QB Christian Stewart, and OL Wilfred Gibson all accepted and would return to the team this season. The only key piece Hutchinson was unable to bring back, was LB Elijah Goldwater, who after arriving in Providence via a trade deadline deal, wanted to take a shot at the open market for the first time in his 9-year career. Providence looks like a threat again, but they still will need to add a few more pieces if they want to truly get over the top.

Buffalo Pays Up for Young Stars
Both QB Charles Lemieux and RB Jimmy Golden were due for paydays this off-season which meant Buffalo would be losing a bit of their salary cap advantage this season. The price for the franchise players would be a 6-year deal for Lemieux with a starting salary of $35,000 that will rise to $38,900 by the end of the contract. As for Golden, he would get 4-years at $28,000-$30,000. Both players will have no-trade clauses in the 3rd year of their contracts. Buffalo is looking strong for the future with these two headlining the team.

Tough Decisions for London and Montreal
Both teams had a dilemma on defence. The Tigers had a lot of LBs after dealing with injuries and bringing in some other LBs to fill in last season. Unfortunately, that means they had to make a difficult decision to decide who to keep. In the end, they made the surprise move to not keep LB Wilson Rockwood-Barnes, who had been a solid piece over the last few years. However, they opted for the younger LB Red Clarkson and LB Gideon Jura as they are starting to focus on the future. As for Montreal, they had a lot of talent in the secondary. With DB Jayson Klyde rising up to likely take a starting job next season, there was going to have to be a veteran casualty. They would sign DB Quentin Xavier, but they would make the decision to keep DB Jared Francis, who they had acquired at the deadline, over DB Carson Scott. Scott had only signed with the Rouge last season, so it is a bit of shock to see him return right back to free agency. Hopefully, both of the decisions pay off for the teams.

Free Agency Preview
There are certainly some strong pieces that will be available for teams to bring in this offseason. The top of the list features LB Elijah Goldwater who, at 31, will likely be looking for a strong contending team to slot into. Top suitors could be Montreal and a return to Providence, but Buffalo and Indiana have an outside shot as teams on the rise. DL Timmy Kerr has been overlooked by the league over the last few seasons, but the 28-year-old is a strong piece on the line that teams like Boston and Providence will be interested in investing in. OL Ulysses Fairgrove made the decision to test free agency after spending his entire career with the Tigers. He has not ruled out returning but wants to give some teams a shot to offer him an enticing deal. QB Stanley Troyer, QB Stanislav Ovechkin, and QB Oscar Rigano will likely be strong targets for teams with the increasing desire for teams to have a solid #2 option at the QB position. There are many other names that will make for an exciting couple of weeks as we approach the draft.

Really hoping Goldwater decides to come back to Providence. I really think if we bring back the same roster from last season and we play to our potential then there is a real chance we could make a serious run at the title.

1963 Free Agency Part 1

The free agency period ended up having a slow start. There was not a lot of action in the first few days, with players taking a lot of time to make their decisions. In the end, the first to budge was LB Wilson Rockwood-Barnes who would end up heading to Indiana on a 2-year deal at $16,500 a season. Rockwood-Barnes immediately shores up the LB score for the Victors who will be aiming for greater improvement next season. Shortly after the Rockwood-Barnes signing, LB Elijah Goldwater made his move. Goldwater had a lot to deliberate in his decision but ultimately the desire to get a completely fresh start while also remaining somewhat close to his hometown of Portland, ME, would win out and he would sign for 2 years with the Montreal Rouge.

The action once again hit a lull after the first two players went. One of the biggest delays came with the DL Timmy Kerr signing. Timmy and his twin brother RB Tommy Kerr were both free agents. They wanted to play on the same team this season, and so they bargained that you get both or none if you want to sign either player. In the end, Boston, who has needed to add on the D-line in almost every single season in the last few years, would bite and sign both Kerr brothers to 2-year deals. OL Ulysses Fairgrove would then be the next to sign heading over to Providence to take another shot at the McCallister Cup. RB Eddie Thompson is heading to Ottawa to take the starting role while RB Corbyn Knight continues to develop. LB Patrick Terry, a providence native, would return to his hometown to take a shot with his childhood team.

There were plenty of signings, but one of the more interesting stories heading into the draft is the Raiders. They would end up bringing in former Victors’ starting QB Stanley Troyer. It seems that the deal might be a bigger sign that QB Lyle Painter could be on the move as Long Island also could be targeting another young QB in the draft on top of having Troyer and Terry Bourbon.

The Gains Report - 1963 Draft Preview
Unfortunately ahead of the organization’s annual draft preview release, The Gains Report lost its creator. The league mourned the passing of Lawrence Gainsborough, age 86, The Former Diplomat, and founder of the Scouting Organization; The Gains Report. Lawrence knew the time was coming as he prepared the company to be ready for his steady hand to come off. Now the role of Head Scout falls onto the shoulders of one Sterling Brantley. The Boston native knew Gainsborough via his own father who hosted Lawrence on his own diplomatic trips into the US. In comparison to Lawrence, Sterling is much more confident and sure of himself in comparison to the more stately Gainsborough.

Sterling Brantley had taken over for Gainsborough as the lead on the draft preview for this season as Gainsborough became ill. He had to deal with some other transitions, mainly with an up-and-coming scout in Jimmy Yamamoto, who had found a pair of gems in DL Wayne Baxton and WR Orlando Barrack. Wayne Baxton looks like the top prospect who is an extremely talented lineman with a knack for getting his hands in the way of passes out of the backfield. Barrack on the other hand is a lightning-fast WR that could burn a lot of defences at the NAAF level (some compare him to the great WR Samuel Floyd who had next-level speed).

Brantly himself had been watching over the Canadian prospects that were likely heading to the NAAF with the news of the OFU likely shutting down. That brought him to OL Viktor Stahl who is very likely a team’s top franchise OL of the future. He also brings forward DL Zane Tannith who isn’t as strong but can still make a strong impact for a lot of teams. LB William Washington II, the younger brother of Boston WR, Otto Washington, has shot up the chart recently after a strong performance to close out his college career and his ability to command the field. Ezra Power is the main option for teams looking to add to the secondary as a fast and agile defender.

Of course, the usual talk was about the top QBs of the draft. QB Matt Fletcher has been viewed as the strongest of the QBs available, though some worry that he might be graded a lot higher than he would in other drafts. He is a pretty good all-around player who can run an offence really effectively as long as he keeps it short as his deep ball can be quite problematic. There is also Nikolas Diakos, who has worked his way up as a potential dark horse prospect that could make a strong push for a spot in the NAAF. There is also Magnus Torrensen who is a more mobile option in comparison to the other two players.
