Re: Minnesota Amateur Hockey League

Wow, the Ice going down is HUGE! Taking trips to International Falls out of the playoffs is a big boon to those teams.

The Bavarians winning is awesome. The Diamonds have such a good look, and it's nice to see a team with such a good look play more games while looking good.

And, of course, it's great to see my Superior Lakers moving on.

Yeah, not having to play in International Falls will be a big plus for everyone else, this makes it back to back years where the Ice didn't make it past their first playoff game.

Re: Minnesota Amateur Hockey League

1961 Kellogg Cup Playoffs, Second Round Day 1

Duluth Voyageurs vs St. Paul Saints
Le Bleus will be wearing their iconic all blue for every game in these playoffs, and they started off very strong. The Voyageurs looked far and away the better team in this one as they led 4-0 after 2. The Saints made a bit of a comeback on a couple of powerplay goals in the third, but Duluth would come out victorious in the end.

Roseau Stars vs Twin Cities Vulcans
The Stars defense shined bright in this one, shutting out the potent Vulcans offense. Ness laid his body on the line all game long, setting a new MAHL record for blocked shots in one game with 21.

Thief River Falls Railers vs Minneapolis Millers
To the surprise of many around the league, the Millers went into Thief River Falls Arena and left with a win. Thief River looked sluggish for most of the first two periods, rumors have sine begun to swirl that members of the team may have been out drinking the night prior and were still a bit hungover at game time. Others just think that being a higher seed put too much pressure on the Railers who have thrived in the underdog role in recent years. Whatever the case was, the Minneapolis Millers took full advantage, scoring 4 times and making a serious case for being dark horse favorites to win it all.

Brainerd Lumberjacks vs New Ulm Bavarians
The Bavarians upset hopes came to a harsh stop as the Brainerd Boys opened the Diamonds eyes to northern hockey. The Jacks bullied the Bavarians all game long, both physically as well as on the score board. When the final horn rang the score was 6-1 Lumberjacks, sending them to the next round.

Re: Minnesota Amateur Hockey League

It's a bit disappointing that these games had little to no late drama. It's playoff hockey, and all were a bit of blowouts.

I'm surprised that the Railers got beaten handily. Brainerd should be enough to beat the Millers in the next round though.

Re: Minnesota Amateur Hockey League

1961 Kellogg Cup Playoffs, Second Round Day 2

Hibbing Greyhounds vs Thunder Bay Giants
One of the most anticipated games of the second round lived up to the hype as the Hounds and Giants battled hard in a defensive showdown. Neither team was able to strike in the first, and there were only a combined 11 shots on goal in the period. Hibbing finally got on the board thanks to veteran captain Polich who beat the Thunder Bay goalie with a wicked backhand. Thunder Bay had some great chances in the third but were unlucky, hitting the pipe twice and having a rebound bounce just over a Giants stick in front of a wide open net. Hibbing would hold on in nail biting fashion to advance to the great 8.

Virginia Royals vs Fergus Falls Cyclones
Hot off of their upset win over the Ice, the Cyclones came out strong, scoring twice in the opening period, the Royals also netted one in the first. Virginia would turn the momentum in their favor in the third, dominating puck possession and pinning the Cyclones in their defensive end for most of the period. Finally the puck found its way into the back of the net through a mass of bodies in front of the goal to tie the game at 2 apiece. The final horn rang and overtime was required. Gassed after being pinned on defense for nearly 20 minutes left Fergus Falls a step or two behind Virginia when OT began. The Royals picked up right where they left off, the crowd cheering on their hometown boys as they fired shot after shot on net. A rebound bounced back into the slot after a shot from the point, Virginia's Louis Nelson was there to bat it back on goal where it slid between the goalies legs and in, sending the Virginia Royals onward.

St. Paul Victorias vs Grand Rapids Moose
In front of a packed house in the St. Paul Auditorium, the Grand Rapids Moose played spoilers, knocking off the heavily favored Victorias 3-1. Grand Rapids' Didi Miller had a game to remember, scoring all three of his teams goals in the upset win over the V's.

Cloquet Broncos vs Superior Lakers
A Lake Superior League rivalry game that many expected to be as close as they come was quite the opposite. This game started like most others, both teams had scored once by the end of the first, but things got ugly really fast. Cloquet's star player Brady Millen was charged with hitting from behind and was assessed a 5 minute major and game misconduct, leaving the Broncos on a long penalty kill and without their top goal scorer. The Lakers took full advantage of the powerplay scoring not once, not twice, but five times! The damage had been done, down 5 the Broncos had all but given up by the end of the second. The Broncos seemed to recover between periods as they looked competitive in the third, but it was far too late. Both teams scored in the third, giving the Superior Lakers a blowout 7-2 win over a league rival on the road.

Re: Minnesota Amateur Hockey League

Holy cow Superior! I wouldn't have picked them to blowout the Broncos, but I'll take it.

Re: Minnesota Amateur Hockey League

I know there isn’t much buzz from the comment section when it comes to playoffs so just wanted to pop in and say the postseason has been great. And again Grand Rapids looks fantastic (would suggest a white outline for the moose on the orange jerseys though). Also seeing the lakers made me remember how classy their look is! As well as the Saints, I really enjoy their colors. On a humorous note, is it bad that the Cyclones are a team I largely support but I can’t stand to look at the entirety of their uniforms? Orange socks are quirky, but I’d even prefer maroon socks to tone it down a smidge! Still love them though.

Re: Minnesota Amateur Hockey League

1961 Kellogg Cup Playoffs, Great Eight

Duluth Voyageurs vs Roseau Stars
One of the best overall games in MAHL playoff history saw the Voyageurs and Stars battle for over 112 minutes in this 3 overtime thriller. Roseau came into Duluth with something to prove, after a few deep runs and a Cup early on as a team, the Stars have been a team that has struggled in the playoffs as of late. Compared to the Voyageurs who are coming off of a Kellogg Cup of their own and a finals appearance the year prior. Duluth came out fast, striking in the first 5 minutes to take an early lead. The Stars would tie the score in the second only for le bleus to reclaim the lead just over a minute later. Roseau would come back to tie it yet again with just over 3 minutes left in the third to force overtime. The first overtime came to an end with both teams not taking any risks, shots were few and far between. The second period was a little more open with both teams getting chances, but neither were able to convert, leading to a third overtime. Roseau came out looking much more conditioned than their counterparts who were gassing out much sooner. This led to a scoring opportunity for the Stars in the 12th minute of the period when a Roseau defenseman was left open on the point where he received a pass and fired a slap shot on net. A teammate of his who was in front of the goal tipped the shot, deflecting it off the crossbar and in, sending the Stars to the semi finals.

Brainerd Lumberjacks vs Minneapolis Millers
Brainerd seemed to have kept the momentum going after blowing out New Ulm, shutting down the Millers on all fronts and looking very good in a 2-0 shut out win over the Mighty Millers.

Hibbing Greyhounds vs Virginia Royals
These bitter neighbors had no love lost between the two in this match up. But the scoreline was all in favor of the Greyhounds in this one, like it has so often the last decade or so, as the Hibbing Greyhounds shut out their next door neighbors in a convincing 3-0 victory.

Superior Lakers vs Grand Rapids Moose
A former Lake Superior League rivalry was reborn in this one as the Moose went to Wisconsin for a very physical game. The hitting began early on with a Moose player sending a Laker over the boards into his own bench, causing a bit of a scrum around the bench. The physical play would continue throughout the game with 2 fights breaking out along the way. Hitting wasn't the only thing on display though, as goals were a plenty with both teams tied at 3 at the end of regulation. About midway through the first overtime, the Moose blocked a shot from the point that deflected into the neutral zone where a Grand Rapids player was there to swoop it and go in on a breakaway. He pump faked, getting the Superior goalie to drop, then went to his backhand and fired the puck just over the outstretched stick of the goalie, winning the game and sending the Moose to the semi finals.

Re: Minnesota Amateur Hockey League

1961 Kellogg Cup Playoffs, Semi Finals

Brainerd Lumberjacks vs Roseau Stars
Both teams came out in full force, exchanging chances back and forth, leaving the scoreline at 2-1 in favor of Brainerd. The second period had a much slower flow of play with stoppages slowing the game so much that neither team could get any momentum going, the score remained 2-1. Brainerd began the third looking like the better team and scored about midway through to give themselves a two goal cushion. Roseau turned the tides late in the game, netting one to get back into the game. But Brainerd was able to keep the Stars off the board for the remainder of the game, sending the Lumberjacks to their first ever Kellogg Cup Final.

Hibbing Greyhounds vs Grand Rapids Moose
Two Iron Range Hockey League foes did battle in the notorious Hibbing Memorial Building. Neither team gave the other any good looks in the first, but Hibbing was able to get on the board thanks to a bouncing dump in that fooled the Moose goaltender to give the Hounds a 1-0 lead after 1. The second period was all Rapids as the Moose owned time of possession and struck once to tie the game at one apiece. The third period was a defensive stalemate as neither team took any chances, forcing overtime. The first overtime looked like a carbon copy of the third as both teams played very cautiously, not wanting to risk anything this far into the post season. A second overtime was needed, and that is where it would end. Hibbing dumped the puck into the Grand Rapids zone where a Greyhound beat out a Moose to the puck down low. Hibbing set up on offense, cycling the puck around the zone until a shooting lane opened up. The shot came from the face off dot to the goalies glove side, the puck was just out of the goalies reach, finding the twine and sending Hibbing to the finals.
