Re: North American Association of Football - NAAF

This was pretty much the perfect week for me. Providence wins, Ottawa lost, Garet deVale had a great week, and Buck Murphy even got to play a bit! Right now I think Louisville and Providence are headed for a big showdown but both Montreal and Ottawa could certainly throw a wrench in that scenario.

Re: North American Association of Football - NAAF

Great win by Montreal. They might actually make the playoffs with how good they have been playing these past few weeks.

Re: North American Association of Football - NAAF

Not the best start to Michael Benedict's career, but Peyton Manning threw 28 INTs in his rookie year, so it's a better start than that!

Also, great week for Ed Edwards!  He's not exactly the player I had the most hopes for, but he's quietly had himself a very nice career so far, being the Offensive Player of the Week is a very little honor to win!

25-21 LDN - FG K Nimrod Handsworth
25-28 OTT - PTD QB Jean Matieau -> WR Angus Stevenson
32-28 LDN - PTD QB Riley Kiernan -> WR Jack Duncan

The Tigers, who have been rattled to the bone with injuries, managed to pull out a massive win to keep themselves in the hunt for the top spot in the West Division.
QB Riley Kiernan put the team on his back with a 2 touchdown performance.
The Royals have slipped in their last couple of games and it's starting to become evident that they may not be as good as they seem.

Providence Gold Stars - 24, The Athletics - 12 - New Providence Stadium - September 1, 1962 - 2 PM ET - Weather: Partly Cloudy
1st Q
7-0 PRO - PTD QB Connor O’Rourke -> WR Sammy Moss
2nd Q

14-3 PRO - RTD RB Marcus Devonshire
3rd Q
14-6 ATH - FG K Elvis Franklin
17-6 PRO - FG K Ira Foster
17-9 ATH - FG K Elvis Franklin
4th Q
17-12 ATH - FG K Elvis Franklin
24-12 PRO - PTD QB Connor O’Rourke -> WR Cedric Peterson

The Gold Stars came through with yet another win officially locking up the East Division.
They certainly weren’t as dominant as last week, but they kept the game in their control throughout in a solid and clean win.
QB Michael Benedict got to start once again and had a much better performance getting the team down the field more frequently.

Long Island Raiders - 7, Boston Independents - 23 - Long Island Stadium - September 2, 1962 - 2 PM ET - Weather: Clear
1st Q
0-3 BOS - FG K Johnnie Berg
2nd Q
0-6 BOS - FG K Johnnie Berg
3rd Q
0-9 BOS - FG K Johnnie Berg
7-9 LI - RTD RB Dareion Fields
7-16 BOS - RTD RB Kendall Morgan
4th Q
7-23 BOS - RTD RB Eddie Thompson

Boston came through with a big win over the Raiders to punch their ticket to the playoffs despite not having QB Nathaniel Braddock in the line-up.
They struggled throughout the first half, but their defence was strong out of the gate with LB Brent Harper getting a forced fumble and DB Mordecai King had an interception as well.
The Raiders were awful in their return home, which saw QB Oscar Rigano start.
The QB could not get the offence going, even when their defence was keeping the Independents at bay.
The poor play ended up leading the fans to boo their hometown team.

Buffalo Blue Wings - 17, Montreal Rouge - 21 - Buffalo Civic Stadium - September 3, 1962 - 2 PM ET - Labour Day - Weather: Clear
1st Q
7-0 BUF - PTD QB Charles Lemieux -> WR Zachariah Pembroke
2nd Q
7-7 MTL - RTD RB Scott Mallard-White
10-7 BUF - FG K Ryan Perch
3rd Q
10-14 MTL - PTD QB Gene Bishop -> WR Taylor Karis
4th Q
17-14 BUF - PTD QB Charles Lemieux -> WR Zachariah Pembroke
17-21 MTL - PTD QB Gene Bishop -> WR Taylor Karis

Montreal locked in their ticket to the playoffs with a win over the Blue Wings.
WR Taylor Karis caught the game-winning touchdown after QB Gene Bishop masterfully led the Rouge down the field on a 4th quarter drive.
Buffalo put up a strong effort in their last-ditch effort at the playoffs, but came up short and will be watching the playoffs from home.

Indiana Victors - 32, Louisville Thunder - 30 - Victory Stadium - September 3, 1962 - 5 PM ET - Labour Day - Weather: Partly Cloudy
1st Q
7-0 IND - PTD QB Mike Key -> WR Ed Edwards
9-0 IND - Safety DL William Sanderson
16-0 IND - RTD RB Cody Barnes
16-3 LOU - FG K Donald Brewer
2nd Q
16-10 LOU - RTD RB Rodney Clark
23-10 IND - RTD RB Don Gregson
3rd Q
23-17 LOU - PTD QB Leonidas Dumont -> WR Clyde McIntosh
26-17 IND - FG K Ross Poindexter
4th Q
29-17 IND - FG K Ross Poindexter
29-24 LOU - PTD QB Leonidas Dumont -> WR Piers Key
29-30 LOU - RTD RB Johnnie Stafford
32-30 IND - FG K Ross Poindexter

The Victors managed to pull off the impossible and upset the league’s best team.
They got off to a massive start with a 16-0 lead out of the gate.
WR Ed Edwards would open the scoring before DL William Sanderson would grab a safety.
After Indy’s second touchdown Louisville would have to bounce back.
The Thunder would climb back and even with back-to-back touchdowns in the 4th to take a late lead.
However, WR Alexei Dubois turned it around with a massive return into Louisville territory that would set up K Ross Poindexter a field goal to win the game.

Re: North American Association of Football - NAAF

Alright, Providence clinches the east! Both Louisville and London are formidable teams, but the Victors beating the Thunder makes them weaker than they were before.

Re: North American Association of Football - NAAF

Great win Montreal, now we have to beat Providence, because I don’t think Boston is losing against the Athletics

Re: North American Association of Football - NAAF

At this point, things are really looking like a two-horse race for the championship between Lousiville and London but I am still holding out hope that my Gold Stars can work a little post-season magic. O'Rourke has been fantastic this season and could reach another gear in the postseason which could lead us past one of the two juggernauts in the West.

Re: North American Association of Football - NAAF

Wow, I am surprised Ottawa is having a good year and are in the playoffs too! Hopefully we can beat Buffalo next week to gain some confidence heading into the postseason. As for the Athletics, I have a feeling they will go 0-12, and they'll clean house and start over as they make the move to Halifax.

1962 Week 12

Long Island Raiders - 22, Indiana Victors - 27 - Long Island Stadium - September 8, 1962 - 3 PM ET - Weather: Cloudy
1st Q
0-3 IND - FG K Ross Poindexter
3-3 LI - FG K Henderson Schumacher
2nd Q
9-3 LI - PTD QB Terry Bourbon -> WR Wilson Queensgate
9-10 IND - PTD QB Mike Key -> WR Alexei Dubois
3rd Q
12-10 LI - FG K Henderson Schumacher
19-10 LI - PTD QB Terry Bourbon -> WR Larry Mossholder
19-17 IND - RTD RB Cody Barnes
4th Q
19-20 IND - FG K Ross Poindexter
22-20 LI - FG K Henderson Schumacher
22-27 IND - PTD QB Mike Key -> WR Alexei Dubois

QB Mike Key maintained his perfect record as a starting QB with another win over the lowly Raiders.
It was a tight game that was one late in the 4th with Key leading a strong drive to score the game-winning touchdown.
The win does give the Victors their best record in franchise history at 5-6-1.
The Raiders had a much better game with QB Terry Bourbon getting the start, which might mean he has a chance to return to the team next season.

Louisville Thunder - 29, London Tigers - 30 - Thunder Stadium - September 8, 1962 - 7 PM ET - SNF - Weather: Cloudy
1st Q
0-3 LDN - FG K Nimrod Handsworth
7-3 LOU - PTD QB Leonidas Dumont -> WR Piers Key
2nd Q
7-6 LDN - FG K Nimrod Handsworth
14-6 LOU - RTD RB Rodney Clark
14-12 LDN - PTD QB Riley Kiernan -> WR Russell Wilcox
3rd Q
17-12 LOU - FG K Donald Brewer
17-15 LDN - FG K Nimrod Handsworth
17-22 LDN - RTD RB Clifford Russell
23-22 LOU - RTD RB Rodney Clark
4th Q
26-22 LOU - FG K Donald Brewer
29-22 LOU - FG K Donald Brewer
29-28 LDN - PTD QB Riley Kiernan -> WR Jack Duncan
29-30 LDN - 2PT QB Riley Kiernan -> WR Russell Wilcox

A stellar duel in Louisville for the West Division came down to the wire.
Both teams went back and forth trying to get an upper hand.
Louisville had the lead late, but QB Riley Kiernan would manage to pick apart the Thunder defence to take one last shot at the endzone.
Kiernan would find WR Jack Duncan open for the touchdown that would cut the lead down to 1.
They would go for 2 since a tie would mean the Thunder win the division.
On the attempt, Kiernan would roll out and would find WR Russell Wilcox, who would make a difficult catch to give the Tigers their second straight West Division title.

Buffalo Blue Wings - 24, Ottawa Royals - 13 - Buffalo Civic Stadium - September 9, 1962 - 1 PM ET - Weather: Partly Cloudy
1st Q
7-0 BUF - RTD RB Jimmy Golden
2nd Q
10-0 BUF - FG K Ryan Perch
10-3 OTT - FG K Maurice Lafayette
3rd Q
10-10 OTT - RTD RB Corbyn Knight
4th Q
17-10 BUF - PTD QB Charles Lemieux -> WR Daniel Irons
17-13 OTT - FG K Maurice Lafayette
24-13 BUF - PTD QB Charles Lemieux -> WR Julius Drake

The Blue Wings would send off Buffalo Civic Stadium with a win over the Royals with two touchdowns in the final quarter.
WR Julius Drake would score his first career touchdown in what would be the final score at the stadium.
Several other veterans had strong days with LB Lloyd Mathis grabbing a forced fumble and S Frazier Brooks had a pick,
The Royals started QB Lee Rogers who had an okay game, but RB Corbyn Knight made his presence known with the team’s lone touchdown.

Montreal Rouge - 35, Providence Gold Stars - 20 - Mount Royal Stadium - September 9, 1962 - 4 PM ET - Weather: Clear
1st Q
7-0 MTL - PTD QB Gene Bishop -> WR Robert Lang
7-3 PRO - FG K Ira Foster
14-3 MTL - RTD RB Scott Mallard-White
2nd Q
21-3 MTL - RTD RB Scott Mallard-White
3rd Q
21-10 PRO - PTD QB Christian Stewart -> WR Ronald Vernon
21-13 PRO - FG K Ira Foster
28-13 MTL - RTD QB Gene Bishop
4th Q
28-20 PRO - PTD QB Christian Stewart -> WR Sammy Moss
35-20 MTL - PTD QB Gene Bishop -> WR Taylor Karis

The Rouge would clinch the final spot in the East Division playoffs with a win over the Gold Stars which forced the Independents into the West for the playoffs.
QB Gene Bishop had a strong game for the Rouge as well as RB Scott Mallard-White as the team continued their recent hot streak heading into the playoffs.
Providence started QB Christian Stewart and he performed well with a pair of touchdown passes to keep the team in the game until the final few minutes.

Boston Independents - 33, The Athletics - 10 - Richardson Stadium - September 9, 1962 - 7 PM ET - Weather: Clear
1st Q
3-0 BOS - FG K Johnnie Berg
10-0 BOS - RTD RB Eddie Thompson

23-7 ATH - PTD QB Michael Benedict -> WR Joshua Lafleur
4th Q
30-7 BOS - PTD QB Bart Swayze -> WR Fredrick St. Pierre
30-10 ATH - FG K Elvis Franklin
33-10 BOS - FG K Johnnie Berg

In the final send-off for The Athletics, the Boston Independents crushed them while giving some younger players a chance after their fate was sealed with the Montreal win.
QB Randy Sellers and QB Bart Swayze would end up splitting the game with Swayze getting a passing touchdown.
The Athletics would struggle in the first half, but they would make it up in the second half with QB Michael Benedict having a strong game where he threw his first career touchdown.

1962 Regular Season Recap
1962 Division Semi-Finals Preview

East Division Semi-Final - Ottawa Royals VS. Montreal Rouge
Head-to-Head: W2 OTT 27-22 MTL, W6 MTL 14-21 OTT

A classic Canadian rivalry will kick off the playoffs. However, it will be a match between a red hot team and a team that has been cooling off. The Rouge closed out the season with 5 straight wins that made them the least desired opponent in the first round of the playoffs. The Royals have not been quite as strong with only 2 wins in their last 6 which means they are not looking the best going in. Montreal is hungry for a playoff win, which they have not had since the 1953 McCallister Cup, so they will be throwing everything out there on the field. As for the Royals, they will be aiming to continue their streak of divisional playoff wins which they have not lost since 1953. Overall, Montreal is the hot hand and I don’t think their season ends yet.
My Pick: Rouge

West Division Semi-Final - Louisville Thunder VS. Boston Independents
Head-to-Head: W3 BOS 26-20 LOU

The Thunder have stumbled in the past couple of weeks with back-to-back losses, but they were only by a combined 3 points so they are certainly still one of the teams to beat. Boston was one of 3 teams to beat the Thunder, however, they did do it with QB Nathaniel Braddock in the lineup. Still, the Thunder have been the best team overall all season so it is very much in their favour at home against the Independents.
My Pick: Thunder
