Re: North American Association of Football - NAAF

1959 Week 9

Buffalo Blue Wings - 11, Long Island Raiders - 20 - Buffalo Civic Stadium - August 20, 1959 - 7 PM ET - TNF - Weather: Clear
1st
0-7 LI - RTD RB Dareion Fields
0-10 LI - FG K Henderson Schumacher
2nd
3-10 BUF - FG K Donald Brewer
3rd
10-10 BUF - PTD QB Angelo Medina -> WR Daniel Irons
10-13 LI - FG K Henderson Schumacher
4th
11-13 BUF - Single K Donald Brewer
11-20 LI - RTD RB Dareion Fields

An ugly win for the Raiders gets them back in the win column after back-to-back losses.
Buffalo made a strong second-half comeback, but a missed field goal from K Donald Brewer seemed to sap the rest of the energy the Blue Wings had, which allowed RB Dareion Fields to take the Raiders down the field to put the game out of reach.
*Long Island clinches playoff spot

Indiana Victors - 9, Louisville Thunder - 37 - Victory Stadium - August 21, 1959 - 7 PM ET - FNF - Weather: Clear
1st
0-7 LOU - PTD QB Leonidas Dumont -> WR Marty Jay
0-14 LOU - RTD RB Stavros Black
2nd
3-14 IND - FG K Ross Poindexter
3-21 LOU - RTD RB Stavros Black
3-24 LOU - FG K Theodore Provost
3rd
9-24 IND - RTD RB Rodney Clark
9-30 LOU - KRTD WR Piers Key
4th
9-37 LOU - PTD QB Leonidas Dumont -> WR Ben Roland

The Thunder earned their second straight win over the Victors in dominant fashion.
They went up early off of a strong offensive attack and interceptions from DB Oliver Langstrom and DB Alexander Bradley, which forced the Victors to make the switch to QB Duane Logan at half time.
Logan was able to get Indy down the field to score at the start of the second half, but any hope was crushed when rookie WR Piers Key would take the ensuing kickoff all the way back the other way.

London Tigers - 41, Worcester Athletics - 15 - Western Fair Stadium - August 22, 1959 - 3 PM ET - Weather: Windy
1st
7-0 LDN - RTD RB Don Gregson
10-0 LDN - FG K Nathaniel King
2nd
17-0 LDN - PTD QB Riley Kiernan -> WR Max Sutton
24-0 LDN - PTD QB Riley Kiernan -> WR Wilbert Benjamin
3rd
24-1 WOR - Single K Elvis Franklin
27-1 LDN - FG K Nathaniel King
34-1 LDN - RTD RB Clifford Russell
4th
34-8 WOR - RTD RB Marcus Devonshire
34-15 WOR - PTD QB Gene Bishop -> WR Marqués Gardner
41-15 LDN - RTD RB Clifford Russell The Tigers dominated the Athletics on home-field only allowing a single point in the first 3 quarters while putting up 34 points of their own.
The Athletics made a late push with a pair of 4th quarter touchdowns, but a 58-yard touchdown run from Clifford Russell shut them down for good. Russell had a great game, almost had 3 touchdowns, but was stopped at the goal line early in the opening quarter which would lead to the power back, Don Gregson, punching it in.
DB Jackson Miles also reeled in a pick for the Tigers with DL Olympus Heights grabbing a forced fumble and a sack on the day.

Providence Gold Stars - 13, Montreal Rouge - 17 - New Providence Stadium - August 22, 1959 - 7 PM ET - SNF - Weather: Rain
1st
0-7 MTL - RTD RB Scott Mallard-White
2nd
3rd
3-7 PRO - FG K Ira Foster
10-7 PRO - PTD QB Connor O’Rourke -> WR Sammy Moss
10-10 MTL - FG K Arthur Kettinger
4th
13-10 PRO - FG K Ira Foster
13-17 MTL - RTD RB Scott Mallard-White

The rain played a big factor in the rematch between Providence and Montreal as both teams combined for 7 turnovers which were all fumbles.
DL Calias McDonough, LB Daevion Shelton and DL Kenny Evans each had one each for Providence while DL Dexter Barbarcos, LB Patrick Terry, DL Blaine Caswell, and S Jumon Cobb each had one for Montreal.
RB Scott Mallard-White would be the major difference-maker in scoring the game-winning touchdown in the 4th quarter.
With this win, Montreal officially takes hold of the tiebreaker in their season series against Providence, which puts them in 4th only 1 point back of the playoffs.

Boston Independents - 34, Ottawa Royals - 22 - Richardson Stadium - August 23, 1959 - 2 PM ET - Weather: Clear
1st
7-0 BOS - PTD QB Nathaniel Braddock -> WR Paul Franklin
7-3 OTT - FG K Maurice Lafayette
7-10 OTT - PTD QB Jean Matieau -> WR Mackenzie Jones
2nd
10-10 BOS - FG K Johnnie Berg
17-10 BOS - PTD QB Nathaniel Braddock -> WR Clyde McIntosh
20-10 BOS - FG K Johnnie Berg
3rd
27-10 BOS - RTD RB Kendall Morgan
27-13 OTT - FG K Maurice Lafayette
27-19 OTT - PTD QB Jean Matieau -> WR Mackenzie Jones
4th
27-22 OTT - FG K Maurice Lafeyette
34-22 BOS - PTD QB Nathaniel Braddock -> WR Ellis Lindholm

QB Nathaniel Braddock came through to lead the Independents over the Royals and end their regular-season winning streak at 20 games (and unbeaten streak at 24).
The win puts Boston in a position to still compete for the East Division title.
QB Jean Matieau and WR Mackenzie Jones both had great days with a pair of touchdown connections, but they weren’t able to keep up with the Independents by the end of the game.

Re: North American Association of Football - NAAF

Oh my gosh, Ottawa has finally lost a regular season game! I'll still give Boston credit where it's due though. Also, Indiana is beginning to look like the 2008 Detroit Lions of the NAAF (I don't remember exactly, but I think Long Island went winless once back when they were in Hartford), and out of curiosity, have you given any thought as to which NAAF teams have cheerleaders at all? Assuming they were prevalent in pro football leagues in this time period at all?

Yes the first season the Hawks moved to Long Island, and the only season the team was known as the Long Island Hawks, they went 0-10. The other team that also went winless was the Toronto (London) Tigers in 1949.

And no I haven't really looked into or focused on cheerleading at all, but a quick wiki search looks like the popularity takes off in the 70s so there certainly won't be that many teams that would have them at the moment. Definitely not a central focus for this series anyway.

Re: North American Association of Football - NAAF

1959 Week 10

Worcester Athletics - 16, Louisville Thunder - 33 - Worcester Stadium - August 27, 1959 - 7 PM ET - FNF - Weather: Clear
1st
0-3 LOU - FG K Theodore Provost
0-10 LOU - PTD QB Leonidas Dumont -> WR Piers Key
2nd
3-10 WOR - FG K Elvis Franklin
6-10 WOR - FG K Elvis Franklin
6-16 LOU - RTD RB Stavros Black
3rd
13-16 WOR - RTD RB Marcus Devonshire
13-19 LOU - FG K Theodore Provost
16-19 WOR - FG K Elvis Franklin
4th
16-26 LOU - RTD QB Leonidas Dumont
16-33 LOU - PTD QB Leonidas Dumont -> WR Ben Roland

Louisville finally flexed their true power in a dominant 4th quarter.
Leonidas Dumont scored a touchdown on his feet and threw for 2 more touchdowns on top of that.
Worcester suffers a difficult loss that could put a big damper on their playoff hopes.
Louisville had strong defensive play from LB Silas O’Brien who had a forced fumble and S Johnny Berger who had an interception.

Long Island Raiders - 20, Indiana Victors - 6 - Long Island Stadium - August 28, 1959 - 3 PM ET - Weather: Clear
1st
7-0 LI - RTD RB Dareion Fields
14-0 LI - PTD QB Lyle Painter -> WR Robert Lang
2nd
14-3 IND - FG K Ross Poindexter
3rd
17-3 LI - FG K Henderson Schumacher
17-6 IND - FG K Ross Poindexter
4th
20-6 LI - FG K Henderson Schumacher

A pretty slow game ended with the Raiders taking home a win and the Victors remaining winless.
QB Stanley Troyer got the start for the Victors but struggled a lot in the game ultimately throwing a pair of interceptions and fumbling once. DL Vernon Spears made his return with a strip-sack to go along with another sack.
The offence for Long Island started hot but went to game manager mode by the end of the game.

Montreal Rouge - 30, London Tigers - 34 - Mount Royal Stadium - August 28, 1959 - 7 PM ET - SNF - Weather: Clear
1st
3-0 MTL - FG K Arthur Kettinger
3-7 LDN - PTD QB Riley Kiernan -> WR Wilbert Benjamin
3-14 LDN - PTD QB Riley Kiernan -> WR Max Sutton
2nd
6-14 MTL - FG K Arthur Kettinger6-21 LDN - RTD RB Clifford Russell

3rd
16-21 MTL - FG K Arthur Kettinger
16-24 LDN - FG K Nathaniel King
22-24 MTL - PTD QB Stanislav Ovechkin -> TE Eli Grant
22-27 LDN - FG K Nathaniel King
4th
28-27 MTL - RTD RB Scott Mallard-White
30-27 MTL - 2PT RB Scott Mallard-White
30-34 LDN - PTD QB Riley Kiernan -> WR Max Sutton

A close battle between the Rouge and Tigers ended with Kiernan leading the Tigers to the endzone late in the fourth to maintain their superb record.
Montreal takes a tough loss with the final playoff spot still wide open, and Long Island to play next week.

Buffalo Blue Wings - 15, Boston Independents - 23 - Buffalo Civic Stadium - August 29, 1959 - 1 PM ET - Weather: Windy
1st
3-0 BUF - FG K Donald Brewer
6-0 BUF - FG K Donald Brewer
2nd
6-3 BOS - FG K Johnie Berg

9-20 BOS - PTD QB Nathaniel Braddock -> WR Clyde McIntosh
4th
15-20 BUF - RTD QB Angelo Medina
15-23 BOS - FG K Johnnie Berg

The wind seemed to be an advantage for whichever team had it at their backs with teams trading field goal tries from quarter to quarter.
Boston would get the win and hold onto the divisional battle with the Royals.LB Brent Harper had a forced fumble and a team-leading 11 tackles in the game.

Ottawa Royals - 39, Providence Gold Stars - 26 - Royals Stadium at Brewer Park - August 29, 1959 - 4 PM ET - Weather: Clear
1st
7-0 OTT - RTD RB Alexei Volkov
7-7 PRO - RTD RB Bernard Alston
14-7 OTT - PTD QB Jean Matieau -> WR Mackenzie Jones
2nd
14-10 PRO - FG K Ira Foster
14-13 PRO - FG K Ira Foster
20-13 OTT - PTD QB Jean Matieau -> WR Chester Bennett
22-13 OTT - 2PT RB Alexei Volkov

4th
32-23 OTT - PTD QB Jean Matieau -> WR Mackenzie Jones
32-26 PRO - FG K Ira Foster
39-26 OTT - DTD INT DB Mingan Oliver

The Royals came away with a big win to keep themselves ahead of the Independents.
It was a close race, but in the end, the Royals came out on top with Mingan Oliver taking a pick back to the endzone to close out the game.

Re: North American Association of Football - NAAF

I can’t remember another season where four teams have dominated the rest of the league so much as this season. To go along with that I’m not so sure there is a clear favorite between Ottawa, LI, Boston, & London either. The playoffs matches between these four teams will be insane.

Yea you hit it on the nose, I am just as surprised about how much of a gap there is to the top of the league. I think a big factor is the schedule this season as there are fewer games happening between those top 4 teams than there usually would be (and the lowest amount possible) as both Boston-Long Island and London-Ottawa don't play each other this season due to the rotation, which means there are only 6 games in total between the top 4 squads instead of potentially 8. Yea the playoffs could be very interesting, and even the battle for the final two spots with all the teams still fighting (except for Indy...yikes). It's anyone's game at this point.

A two game winning streak? You're finally realizing your potential Thunder! Let's see if we can make the postseason!...that is possible right?

It is still very possible, being only 1 point back of the Blue Wings and or the Athletics for a cross-over, but this week is pretty much a must-win against the Tigers, with Buffalo playing the lowly Victors. And even if the Athletics, Rouge, and Gold Stars all lose this week, either Worcester or Montreal would be guaranteed to get enough points to tie or finish better than Louisville, since they play each other next week (this is the case if Louisville loses).
