Re: North American Association of Football - NAAF

1959 Week 5

London Tigers - 35, Louisville Thunder - 32 - Western Fair Stadium - July 23, 1959 - 7 PM ET - TNF - Weather: Clear
1st
7-0 LDN - PTD QB Riley Kiernan -> WR Wilbert Benjamin
7-7 LOU - RTD RB Stavros Black
10-7 LDN - FG K Nathaniel King
2nd
17-7 LDN - RTD RB Clifford Russell
17-14 LOU - PTD QB Leonidas Dumont -> WR Ben Roland
17-21 LOU - INT DTD - DB Oliver Langstrom
3rd
20-21 LDN - FG K Nathaniel King
20-27 LOU - PTD QB Leonidas Dumont -> TE Christopher Gist
20-29 LOU - 2PT RB Stavros Black
4th
27-29 LDN - RTD RB Clifford Russell
27-32 LOU - FG K Theodore Provost
33-32 LDN - PTD QB Riley Kiernan -> WR Benedict Spencer
35-32 LDN - 2PT RB Clifford Russell
Louisville fell short once again, with London coming from behind to get back into the win column.
Both Leonidas Dumont and Riley Kiernan had solid games nearly matching each other in all stats.
DB Oliver Langstrom did come down with his first career pick-6 to give the Thunder the lead at half time.
DB Jackson Miles had a pick for the Tigers as one of the few bright defensive spots in this game.

Indiana Victors - 16, Ottawa Royals - 19 - Victory Stadium - July 24, 1959 - 7 PM ET - Weather: Clear
1st
7-0 IND - RTD RB Rodney Clark
2nd
13-0 IND - PTD QB Caldwell Higgins III -> WR Nathan Green
13-7 OTT - RTD RB Alexei Volkov
3rd
16-7 IND - FG K Ross Poindexter
16-8 OTT - Single K Maurice Lafayette
4th
16-14 OTT - RTD RB Alexei Volkov
16-16 OTT - 2PT QB Brian Meadows -> WR Truman Harry
16-19 OTT - FG K Maurice Lafayette

The Royals had a scare on the road against the Victors but were bailed out by Alexei Volkov taking in a pair of touchdowns.
QB Caldwell Higgins III had a strong performance which probably saved his job for now, but he certainly doesn’t have a long rope before the Victors may throw either Duane Logan or Stanley Troyer.
S Cal Clemmons grabbed his first career interception and DB Kelly Kirkland had a pick as well.
Ottawa’s defence struggled as a whole but came through at the end to hold off the Victors.

Worcester Athletics - 17, Boston Independents - 13 - Worcester Stadium - July 25, 1959 - 3 PM ET - Weather: Rain
1st
7-0 RTD RB Marcus Devonshire
2nd
7-3 BOS - FG K Johnie Berg
10-3 WOR - FG K Elvis Franklin
10-10 BOS - PTD QB Nathaniel Braddock -> TE Richard Stewart
3rd
4th
10-13 BOS - FG K Johnnie Berg
17-13 WOR - RTD RB Marcus Devonshire.

Boston and Worcester got caught in the rain for their Saturday afternoon match, which worked in Worcester’s favour.
Both teams had several fumbles due to the weather which got worse in the second half, which caused the game-winning touchdown where LB Scotty Williams was able to knock the ball loose deep in Boston territory.
RB Marcus Devonshire had a pair of touchdowns and the game-winner to put Worcester back in the hunt.

Long Island Raiders - 20, Buffalo Blue Wings - 17 - Long Island Stadium - July 25, 1959 - 7 PM ET - SNF - Weather: Rain/Windy
1st
3-0 LI - FG K Henderson Schumacher
6-0 LI - FG K Henderson Schumacher
2nd
13-0 LI - RTD RB Dareion Fields
3rd
13-7 BUF - RTD RB Johnnie Stafford
13-10 BUF - FG K Donald Brewer
4th
20-10 LI - PTD QB Lyle Painter -> WR Darryl Duke
20-17 BUF - RTD RB Johnnie Stafford

Long Island ran into an issue in their battle with Buffalo, losing both DL Tyrone Affalo and DL Matis Baril both leaving the game forcing OL Lewis David and OL Shovon Coleman having to step in with both DL Vernon Spears and DL Timmy Kerr out already.
RB Johnnie Stafford continued to show his strong play for Buffalo, but it wasn’t enough to win the game.
QB Lyle Painter came through in the end for the Raiders’ win.

Montreal Rouge - 24, Providence Gold Stars - 21 - Mount Royal Stadium - July 26, 1959 - 2 PM ET - Weather: Clear
1st
7-0 MTL - RTD RB Scott Mallard-White
7-3 PRO - FG K Ira Foster
2nd
14-3 MTL - RTD RB Scott Mallard-White
14-9 PRO - FG PTD QB Connor O’Rourke -> WR Sammy Moss
14-11 PRO - 2PT QB Connor O’Rourke -> WR Christian Venegas
3rd

21-18 PRO - PTD QB Connor O’Rourke -> TE Micheal Bowman III
4th
21-21 PRO - FG K Ira Foster
24-21 MTL - FG K Arthur Kettinger

RB Scott Mallard-White took the Rouge on his back to get them their first win of the season.
DB Quentin Xavier also grabbed a pick as well to help Montreal top the Gold Stars.
Providence made a good effort to come back but fell short by the end of the game.

Re: North American Association of Football - NAAF

Tough couple weeks for Louisville as they lose another close game. The Thunder could easily have 2 or 3 wins at this point in the season if a couple of those close games swung in their favor. The record of 0-5 does not at all represent the talent level of the team. I still feel like they have one of the best secondaries in the league and if they continue to play well I could see a potential winning streak in the back half of the season for them.

Did you ever hear the tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise?

1959 Week 6

Long Island Raiders - 27, Worcester Athletics - 4 - Long Island Stadium - July 31, 1959 - 7 PM ET - FNF - Weather: Windy
1st
7-0 LI - PTD QB Lyle Painter -> WR Robert Lang
10-0 LI - FG K Henderson Schumacher

17-1 LI - RTD RB Dareion Fields
20-1 LI - FG K Henderson Schumacher
4th
20-4 WOR - FG K Elvis Franklin
27-4 LI - PTD QB Lyle Painter -> WR Darryl Duke

Long Island’s LB core came through to help the broken D-line and shut down the Worcester offence.
LB Gene Benson had a forced fumble and both DB Clinton Gates and DB Slay Mitchell had picks to add.
QB Lyle Painter had a strong game with a pair of touchdowns for the Raiders.
Worcester continues to show their issues as they slip further behind Boston and Ottawa in the East.

Boston Independents - 36, Providence Gold Stars - 33 - Richardson Stadium - August 1, 1959 - 1 PM ET - Weather: Clear
1st
7-0 BOS - RTD RB Kendall Morgan
7-7 PRO - PTD QB Connor O’Rourke -> WR Christian Venegas
2nd
14-7 BOS - RTD RB Kendall Morgan
14-10 PRO - FG K Ira Foster

28-19 BOS - PTD QB Nathaniel Braddock -> WR Ellis Lindholm
28-26 PRO - PTD QB Connor O’Rourke -> WR Christian Venegas
4th
28-33 PRO - PTD QB Connor O’Rourke -> WR Christian Venegas
34-33 BOS - PTD QB Nathaniel Braddock -> WR Clyde McIntosh
36-33 BOS - 2PT RB Kendall Morgan

An offensive masterpiece in the heated Boston-Providence rivalry sees QB Nathaniel Braddock get the last laugh on a touchdown pass to WR Clyde McIntosh.
QB Connor O’Rourke played his usual strong game but ultimately came up short in his 4 touchdown performance.
RB Kendall Morgan was back to a strong form for Boston after returning from injury in last week’s game against Worcester, with a pair of early TDs in this one.

Louisville Thunder - 20, Indiana Victors - 10 - Thunder Stadium - August 1, 1959 - August 1, 1959 - 4 PM ET - Weather: Clear
1st
3-0 LOU - FG K Theodore Provost
2nd
3-3 IND - FG K Ross Poindexter
3-10 IND - RTD RB Rodney Clark
3rd
6-10 LOU - FG K Theodore Provost
13-10 LOU - RTD RB Stavros Black
4th
20-10 LOU - PTD QB Leonidas Dumont -> WR Ben Roland

Louisville finally pulled through with their first win of the season, but it wasn’t a pretty one as falling behind 3-10 at halftime.
Indiana seemed to have a strong game plan early on but fell apart in the second half with QB Caldwell Higgins III throwing a pair of interceptions to DB Jayden Mills and DB Alexander Bradley.
Ben Roland broke free for a huge score to secure the win for the Thunder, on a 29-yard shot to the endzone.

Ottawa Royals - 23, Montreal Rouge - 21 - Royals Stadium at Brewer Park - August 2, 1959 - 2 PM ET - Weather: Windy
1st
0-7 MTL - INT DTD DB Quentin Xavier

4th
20-14 OTT - FG K Maurice Lafayette
20-21 MTL - RTD RB Scott Mallard-White
23-21 OTT - FG K Maurice Lafayette

In their second meeting in just 3 weeks, the Royals and Rouge had another heated battle, which came down to the royals grabbing a pair of field goals in the 4th to put them over the top and remain perfect heading into Long Island next week.
RB Alexei Volkov was the main factor for the Royals coming through with a pair of touchdowns and 125 Rushing Yards.
Montreal falls short again and falls into a deep hole in the east division.

Buffalo Blue Wings - 15, London Tigers - 27 - Buffalo Civic Stadium - August 2, 1959 - 5 PM ET - Weather: Windy
1st
3-0 BUF - FG K Donald Brewer

15-27 LDN - RTD RB Clifford Russell London continued to ride their strong start and came through with a strong win over their Buffalo rivals. Buffalo struggled to get into the endzone until the final quarter with London’s defence having a strong game; LB Aengus Lynch came through with an interception and forced fumble, and DL Dee Floyd had a forced fumble as well.

Re: North American Association of Football - NAAF

1959 Week 7

Boston Independents - 24, Worcester Athletics - 13 - Richardson Stadium - August 7, 1959 - 7 PM ET - FNF - Weather: Clear
1st
7-0 BOS - PTD QB Nathaniel Braddock -> WR Ellis Lindholm
2nd
14-0 BOS - PTD QB Nathaniel Braddock -> WR Paul Franklin
14-3 WOR - FG K Elvis Franklin
3rd
14-6 WOR - FG K Elvis Franklin
17-6 BOS - FG K Johnnie Berg
4th
24-6 BOS - RTD RB Kendall Morgan
24-13 WOR - PTD QB Gene Bishop -> WR Marqués Gardner

Boston got their revenge on Worcester to kick off week 7 of the NAAF.
Braddock had another pair of TD passes with Kendall Morgan taking in the other touchdown on the day.
LB Konrad Aust had a strong game with a forced fumble and 11 tackles.
Gene Bishop did find the endzone late to Gardiner, but it was not anywhere near enough to make it a good game.

Indiana Victors - 17, Montreal Rouge - 27 - Victory Stadium - August 8, 1959 - 3 PM ET - Weather: Clear
1st
0-7 MTL - DTD INT DB Quentin Xavier
0-10 MTL - FG K Arthur Kettinger
2nd
0-13 MTL - FG K Arthur Kettinger
7-13 IND - RTD RB Rodney Clark
7-20 MTL - RTD RB Scott Mallard-White
3rd
10-20 IND - FG K Ross Poindexter
4th
17-20 IND - RTD RB Rodney Clark
17-27 MTL - RTD RB Scott Mallard-White

Montreal would reel in their second win of the season with a strong performance from Mallard-White.
Indiana stayed in it on the legs of Rodney Clark, but they still slipped further behind the rest of the pack at 0-7.
Quentin Xavier also came through with a big game with a pick-6 and 5 tackles to go along with it.

Ottawa Royals - 31, Long Island Raiders - 20 - Royals Stadium at Brewer Park - August 8, 1959 - 7 PM ET - SNF  - Weather: Clear
1st
0-7 LI - RTD RB Dareion Fields
3-7 OTT - FG K Maurice Lafayette
10-7 OTT - PTD QB Jean Matieau -> WR Chester Bennett
2nd
10-10 LI - FG K Henderson Schumacher
3rd
17-10 OTT - PTD QB Jean Matieau -> WR Truman Harry
17-17 LI - PTD QB Lyle Painter -> WR Robert Lang
4th
17-20 LI - FG K Henderson Schumacher
24-20 OTT - PTD QB Jean Matieau -> WR Mackenzie Jones
31-20 OTT - RTD RB Alexei Volkov

The battle of the unbeaten teams ended up with the Royals continuing their win streak with QB Jean Matieau back in the lineup.
The Raiders had a late chance, but QB Lyle Painter threw a pick to DB Mingan Oliver which would lead to the game-clinching Volkov touchdown.
The Raiders continued to suffer injuries with WR Darryl Duke leaving the game, but his absence allowed for WR Peter Brooks to get some action on the field.

Providence Gold Stars - 18, Louisville Thunder - 12 - New Providence Stadium - August 9, 1959 - 1 PM ET - Weather: Clear
1st
0-3 LOU - FG K Theodore Provost
2nd
7-3 PRO - PTD QB Connor O’Rourke -> TE Micheal Bowman III
7-6 LOU - FG K Theodore Provost
3rd
7-9 LOU - FG K Theodore Provost
7-12 LOU - FG K Theodore Provost
13-12 PRO - PTD QB Connor O’Rourke -> WR Sammy Moss
15-12 PRO - 2PT QB Connor O’Rourke -> TE Micheal Bowman III
4th
18-12 PRO - FG K Ira Foster

The inability to finish a drive was the downfall of the Thunder in Providence.
Despite DB Alexander Bradley and S Johnny Berger bringing in big interceptions, the offence couldn’t get past the Gold Star defence and into the endzone.
The Gold Stars’ offence was certainly not playing their best either, but O’Rourke’s 2 passing touchdowns were enough to put them over the edge to win their 3rd game of the season.

London Tigers - 28, Buffalo Blue Wings - 8 - Western Fair Stadium - August 9, 1959 - 4 PM ET - Weather: Clear
1st
7-0 LDN - RTD RB Clifford Russell
7-7 BUF - RTD RB Johnnie Stafford
2nd
14-7 LDN - PTD QB Riley Kiernan -> WR Benedict Spencer
3rd
21-7 LDN - PTD QB Riley Kiernan -> WR Max Sutton
21-8 BUF - Single K Donald Brewer
4th
28-8 LDN - RTD RB Clifford Russell

The Tigers dominated both battles of the great lakes this season, and their home showing was certainly the more brutal beating.
Buffalo’s only shot was in the first quarter before they were completely shut down in the second half.
Kiernan led the Tigers to another win and now sit tied with the Raiders at the top of the West division ahead of their first match with Long Island this season.

Re: North American Association of Football - NAAF

1959 Week 8

Worcester Athletics - 20, Providence Gold Stars - 7 - Worcester Stadium - August 14, 1959 - 7 PM ET - FNF - Weather: Clear

4th
13-7 WOR - FG K Elvis Franklin
20-7 WOR - RTD RB Marcus Devonshire

After a very slow first half, the Gold Stars found themselves in the lead early in the second half only for RB Marcus Devonshire to take over the game and lead the Athletics to their 3rd win of the season.
S Shawn Jensen did leave the game with an injury, but LB Scotty Williams and LB Harrison Bennett made up for his absence creating 3 turnovers combined.
Providence’s offence lacked consistency in the game and with WR Christian Venegas getting knocked out of the game, it only added to the issues.

Louisville Thunder - 20, Ottawa Royals - 28 - Thunder Stadium - August 15, 1959 - 3 PM ET - Weather: Clear
1st

The Royals continue to win with another over the Louisville Thunder.
Dumont kept the Thunder in the game against the Royals, but they stalled in the second half, and the Royals' run-game took over.
RB Alexei Volkov had a strong game putting in his bid for quietly being one of the best RBs in the league this season.
*Ottawa clinches playoff spot

Long Island Raiders - 24, London Tigers - 31 - Long Island Stadium - August 15, 1959 - 7 PM ET - SNF - Weather: Windy

4th
21-24 LI - FG K Nathaniel King
24-24 LI - FG K Henderson Schuamacher
24-31 LDN - PTD QB Riley Kiernan -> WR Wilbert Benjamin

A super important divisional battle between two 6-1 teams came down to the final quarter.
Both sides showed strong a offensive attack as well as strong defence to stop the other side short of the endzone.
In the end, it was a well crafted Riley Kiernan drive that was the difference-maker in getting the Tigers to the top of the West Division and setting a new franchise high in wins in a season.
LB Rusty McVee did have a forced fumble as did LB Aengus Lynch of the Tigers.
The Tigers will have the advantage over the Raiders heading into the week 12 match between the two squads in London.

Buffalo came out with a narrow win over the Victors to put some space between themselves and the Thunder for the final playoff spot in the West.
The Victors came close to their first win of the season with a strong performance from RB Rodney Clark but came up short once again.
Rookie DL Lonnie Vincent had his first career forced fumble in this one taking it away from QB Caldwell Higgins III.
