Re: History of the National Football Association - 1974-75 Season

Cincinnati is proving that you don't need to win big, you just need to win.

Sad to see the Zephyrs go down and for such an unlucky reason, too, but I agree with Stickman, I think the Whales have a great shot to win it all.

1970-71 NFA Semifinals - Washington Pirates at Cincinnati Sabres
Cincinnati would follow up last week’s poor performance with another disappointing outing. The team would play better but would be playing a much more talented team in the Pirates. It would be close in the first half, with teams exchanging blows, but Cincy just couldn’t keep up and Washington would send themselves to their third Champions Bowl in 4 years with a 41-31 win.

1970-71 NFA Semifinals - Pittsburgh Ironmen at San Francisco Whales
San Francisco would come up with another decisive win. Both teams were tied at 10 at half time before the Ironmen would watch their defense start to crumble, letting the Whales get 14 third quarter points while they only could get 3. San Francisco would close it out early in the fourth with another field goal that made it just out of the Ironmen’s reach. While not as impressive as last week’s the Whales 27-13 win would send them to their first ever Champions Bowl.

Quarterfinals: Damn. No Mr. MVP, you are not Michael Jordan. Upset!
Semifinals: Close all around, but we got a water final!
San Fran beats the Prates!

Picking the Whales in this one, they seem to be on a roll, Washington may have experence on it's side, but I just think SF is more talented and I think they win 29-24.

1970-71 NFA Champions Bowl - San Francisco Whales vs Washington Pirates

This game would start off hot, Washington would get on the board first within the game’s first 3 minutes with a 34 yard bomb from QB Ron Murray. San Francisco would quickly retaliate with a score of their own. Just like that we were off, each team exchanging blows back and forth. The first turnover of the game would come late in the first half when RB Charley Rodgers would fumble the ball as he was hit, setting up San Francisco within Pirates territory. The Whales would capitalize on this and kick a field goal through as time expired in the first half. San Francisco had a 6 point lead, 14-20.

The second half would be just as exciting as the first. Washington would get a pick six off of San Francisco’s QB John Leonard on the opening drive that gave them a 1 point lead. San Francisco would take the lead back with a field goal not long later. San Francisco would force a punt on the next drive out and WR Matt Wells  would return it all the way for the score, giving the Whales a 9 point lead as the third quarter turned into the fourth. Washington would make a valiant comeback attempt, scoring quickly in the fourth and forcing a punt of their own shortly after. This would eventually give them a 31-30 lead as mid way through the fourth they would knock another through the uprights. San Francisco had plenty of time however, and they would quickly go down the field and hit a short range 10 yard field goal with under 2 minutes to go. With everyone on the edge of their seats, the Pirates would attempt to get down the field and score but it wasn’t meant to be as on 4th and 4, QB Ron Murray would miss his target, as the ball was just too far out of reach for WR Gene Harris. San Francisco would win their first ever Champions Bowl, with the final score of 33-31 in an all time classic game. RB Sid Snell would win the MVP with a 2 touchdown performance.

C&C appreciated, congrats to the Whales!

Cool to see the Whales win it! I like their branding and it's always cool to see a team get their first ring.

Hell of a game, congrats to the Whales. Fun Fact: This is the first time a team west of Chicago has won a Champions Bowl.
