Well I guess that all good things must come to an end at some point. In true Chicago fashion, I expect the Zephyrs to have a mediocre season next year.

Refreshing seeing non-Chicago teams in the Champions Bowl.

Also, was the final score in the CHI-DET game supposed to be 17-13 or 17-10?

1961-62 NFA Champions Bowl - Detroit Bombers vs Washington Pirates
Detroit walked into LA County Stadium having just accomplished the biggest postseason upset in NFA history, their opponent; the Pirates, however, had just played one of the most lopsided games in NFA postseason history. The Pirates had been here twice in the past 3 years, this is Detroit’s first appearance since ‘57. This wasn’t expected to be close, QB Doug Emmonds of Washington was out to prove he could win in the Champions Bowl, and that he should’ve won the MVP. Detroit was old and at the twilight of their prime. However as the game came to start, Detroit's hunger for something with which to celebrate this era showed. They started down the field QB Houston Henderson and RB Charley Rodgers splitting the load. Henderson would find WR James Nelson for a big gain of 21 yards half way through the drive, which would set the Bombers up in Pirates territory. Rodgers would carry this momentum and find his way into the endzone for a 13 yard rushing TD, giving Detroit the early 7-0 lead. Washington would attempt a retaliation, but 2 plays in, DE Curly Smith, an offseason acquisition, would shed his blocker and find his way to Emmonds quickly. Emmonds would force a throw but Smith was right there, he would block and catch the pass, giving him his first interception of his career, and giving Detroit a huge advantage. The Bombers were now set up deep in Washington Pirates territory. However the Pirates defense would make up for their offense. A key tackle by DE Monty Jones would keep Rodgers a yard short on a 3rd down try, forcing Detroit to bring out the kicking platoon. 3 points later and Washington had another chance to try and get down the field and score. 3 plays later though and they’d walk off the field for the punting team.
The Pirates would send the ball off to Detroit to start the second quarter, Detroit would take advantage and come up with a solid return. The following drive would be just a compilation of Rodgers burning defenders and getting yards as he would take the next 8 snaps and turn them into a 1st down at the 3 yard line. The Bombers would stupidly look for Henderson to finish the drive, after Rodgers had just gained all 43 yards by himself. Henderson would miss 3 straight targets and Detroit would once again have to settle for 3. Washington would need a big play to avoid going into the half down 13-0. “Dougie” would finally deliver. After scrambling for 39 yards on one play, he followed it up with a 38 yard touchdown throw to WR Dale English, Emmonds' partner in crime. Washington was finally on the board cutting the Bombers lead to just 6. Detroit would subsequently be forced to punt for the first time tonight, after a Henderson throw was almost picked off by S John Jackson. The Pirates would end the half off on a field goal attempt that was a hair and a half short.
Washington still favored, came out of half hot. Emmonds would half 5 straight 8 yard pass completions, then hand it off to RB Jack Dorsey to get another 6. However on 3rd down Emmonds’ receiver would drop the ball after he was hit, and the kicking team would have to come out. The kick would be close, it would bounce off the left post and in, putting Washington within 3 of the lead. Rodgers would continue to shine for the Bombers as they would make their way back down the field. It didn’t take long before he finally made it back to the house, giving himself and the Bombers a second TD of the night and a big 20-10 lead. Washington would make it to about midfield before the clock would tick for the last time in the third quarter.
As the last quarter of the season would start up, Washington would get hot once again, not long after we came back to the game did Dorsey find himself in the endzone. Washington once again within a score. Both teams would then exchange quick 3 and outs, both QBs going 0-3 on their drives. Now with the ball again, Detroit would have a goal to put the nail in the coffin, up only 3, a touchdown would seal the first Champions Bowl victory for the Bombers and finally make up for the heartbreak at the hands of the Hornets 5 years ago. Rodgers and Henderson would carry the offense, veteran WR Christopher Black being an unstoppable target along the way. It would come down to a third and 3 on the Pirates 22 yard line. The ball was snapped and handed off to Rodgers. Rodgers would go head first into the pile only to be stopped up and sent to the ground a yard short of the line by ILB Parker Romeo. The Pirates with one play bought them a ticket to keep their season alive. The Bombers would make an easy 3 points as hard as could be, an almost botched snap and hold, that was saved, was then ruined when the kick would sail way left, leaving the score 20-17. Washington would make quick work of a retaliation and storm up the field. Emmonds having a hot hand and foot, as he continued to use his speed as an advantage, scrambling for 15 on one play. The Pirates would continue to melt through the Bombers defense until they finally managed to get a stop. Now faced with a 3rd and 11, Dougie really needed to pull something out of his magic hat and stun the crowd here in Cali. He takes the snap and steps back, Detroit blitzes, he sees this coming and avoids the blitzers and scrambles ahead into space, halfway to the line he’s wrapped around the foot by MOD DE George Portson. As he starts to fall to the ground Emmonds leaps for the line, sticking the ball out. The ball comes down an inch short of the line, ruled 4th and less than a yard by the refs. Emmonds, frustrated, throws his helmet into the bench as the field goal team enters onto the field. As the Pirates tie things up at 20, Detroit’s watching the clock, there’s just enough for one more quick drive. Rodgers wouldn’t need more than 15 seconds as on the first play, he receives the snap, stiff arms a defender and takes off down the field. He eventually would be pushed out but only after getting just into field goal range. The Bombers would get another first down and whittle down the clock. With 5 seconds left on the clock Bombers coach Chester Osborne blows the teams last time out and everyone holds their breaths as the field goal team goes on. It was like it was choreographed, as the ball was snapped a simultaneous hush went over the crowd. Expecting a botch and miss at worse and a Champions Bowl victory at most, the mind of every Bombers fan was racing. The snap and hold, unlike last time were flawless, the kick was there too. The ball would fly through the uprights and Detroit would storm the field, Rodgers was lifted on the backs of teammates as he was named the MVP of the game. Detroit had performed back to back upsets. Washington however, would walk off defeated for the third time in 5 years. The final score was 23-20, the Detroit Bombers had beaten the Washington Pirates.
And here's the field design. For the first time ever in the NFA were the end zones completely filled in with color. A special version of the league logo was created for the Champions Bowl and each helmet was displayed at the 40 yard line.

C&C Appreciated! What do you think of the upset?
