1907-1908 Football World Championship

The AAAFL Champion Milwaukee Brewmasters traveled to Madrid, Spain, to take part in the Football World Championship.

After posting a scoreless tie against Quick Den Haag of the Netherlands, the Brewmasters clobbered Roubaix of France 3:0.  This set up a climactic final group game against Manchester United of England.  Milwaukee could not find its rhythm and lost to the English champions, 4:0.

The host team, Madrid FC, triumphed in the final.

1907-1908 Derbies

A new derby was instituted in New York by the Order of Scottish Clans.  The New York Formorians and the New York Chieftains will play for the Silver Shilleleagh.  This year's winners are shown with their crest.

Re: All-American Association Football League

The Baltimore Bannerets no longer can simply be called “the other team in Baltimore.”  In the 1908-1909 season, they achieved the same level of success that the Baltimore Chimney Swifts had on 3 previous occasions – AAAFL Ultimate Division champions.  The Bannerets jockeyed for first position over the fall portion of the season with the Privateers and defending champion Brewmasters.  They climbed to the top during Week 13 and remained there for the spring season.  While the Brewmasters faded, the Chimney Swifts moved up to challenge the Bannerets, but the younger club kept a healthy lead in the table, finishing 3 points ahead.

The newly promoted Cincinnati Scarlets had a decent season, finishing in the middle of the table.  The other promoted squad, the Washington Insiders, managed to finish 2 points ahead of relegation.  The bottom of the table saw the Detroit Longtails and Brooklyn Bridegrooms (again) finish in the relegation zone.

Two members of the Bannerets made the Top 11 Squad – Forward Gavin Fitzgerald and Goalkeeper Jack Dennis.  The Boston Shipwrights placed five, despite their 5th place finish.  One of them, Vance French, tallied the most points for the year and also won the Golden Ball.

Re: All-American Association Football League

In the Penultimate Division, the Cleveland Longlegs ended a 4 season sojourn by taking the top spot to secure promotion to the Ultimate Division.  The big surprise was that Milwaukee Cream City FC was able to nab the second spot.  The other team from Milwaukee ended up tied with the recently demoted Boston Gaelics at 36 points, but Cream City had a 7 goal better goal difference.  The other recent demotion, inaugural squad Chicago West Side Kicks, finished tied with their Windy City Brothers of the Southsiders at 35 points.

The other three new squads – Columbus Arches, Old Nassau 1869, and Kearny Caledonians – finished well enough to remain in the Penultimate.  Pawtucket Millwheels and Louisville Racehorses finished at the bottom of the table.

In the Eastern Regional Division, Fall River Spindles and Philadelphia United Cricket Clubs earned promotion for next season.  Union Newark was one point shy.  Recently demoted New York Chieftains finished in 5th while the Paterson True Blues finished poorly in 12th.  The two promotions to the division – Noviport FC and Ilium FC – ended up well off the pace at the bottom of the table.

Re: All-American Association Football League

In the Mid-American Regional Division, the season’s end saw Indianapolis Circle City claim the title.  Thomas Cahill’s new club, the St. Louis All-Saints, continued his prophesied climb by taking the second promotion spot.   Newcomer Dayton Gem City wallowed at the bottom of the table, while newly promoted Des Moines Mönche came ever-so-close to earning another promotion, when the Monks ended up even on points by two goals behind on goal difference.

In the Western Regional, two new squads  – Spokane Lilac FC and Tacoma Olympians -had a rough go of it in their first regional season, finishing at the bottom two spots.  At the top, Alameda Vampires claimed their second regional title and the right to host the Columbia Challenge Tournament.
