Re: Nippon American Football League

Today's team takes us to Nishinomiya and Koshien Stadium, home of Japan's world-famous high school baseball tournaments. Turns out, Koshien also happens to host the Koshien Bowl, Japan's college football championship game, and Nishinomiya is also home to Kwansei Gakuin University, one of the most prestigious football programs in the nation. Hanshin is the name for the Osaka-Kobe region, which includes Nishinomiya, and is also the name of NPB's Tigers, although they were named after their owner, Hanshin Electric Railway. Anyway, to fit the tradition of Koshien, Hanshin's NAFL team is very classic, with a generic football name to complete the deal. Their colors are navy and gold, a spin on Kangaku's blue and gold color palette.

The Wildcats' uniforms are inspired by the California Golden Bears, with navy helmets, jerseys, and socks, and gold pants. Their road jerseys minimize the gold, instead using navy pants and white socks to match with the white jerseys. A simple Northwestern stripe serves as the decoration.

And there's the Wildcats! I initially wasn't planning on a Hanshin team to avoid the direct parallels with NPB but when I found out that the area is a relative hotbed of college football in Japan I had to include them. Tomorrow we'll venture to the NAFL's smallest market, but it might be their mightiest!

Re: Nippon American Football League

Okinawa is Japan's southernmost prefecture, probably most known for being home to a large American military presence. While the bases are controversial for a variety of reasons, they're the reason the NAFL placed a team here, hoping to attract GIs missing American football. The name "Knights" has no direct tie to the region, but I like the sound of "Okinawa Knights". It's got good cadence, I feel. The Knights rock a color scheme of orange, black, and silver. Their logo is a shield with an O on top of crossed swords, which come from my IFC Kyoto project.

The Knights' jerseys were heavily inspired by the Carolina Panthers', with a metallic silver helmet and pants. However, instead of emphasizing black, I emphasized the bright orange due to Okinawa's tropical nature. The Knights are the only NAFL team with silver helmets and pants. I imagine they would also have orange socks and white pants like the Panthers, and mix-and-match frequently.

And there's Okinawa's team! Okinawa was a location I really wanted to include, and with the sizable American population, it stands to reason that the team would be successful. Tomorrow we head back to the Kanto region!

Re: Nippon American Football League

Chiba is one of the other cities on Tokyo Bay and has a history with pilots of all kinds. Narita Airport, Japan's largest, is located in Chiba Prefecture, and the city is known for its hanging monorail. The Pilots use a classic color scheme of green and gold, mostly because there was no other team that used green. The icon in the middle of the C represents air, land, and sea, the places where real pilots make the world move.

The Pilots' uniforms are appropriately simple. The team's logo is on the helmet and sleeves, and gold pants with a single green stripe add a splash of color. The three stripe pattern can be found on the front and back bumpers of the helmet as well.

And that's Chiba! I don't really have any notes on them as they mostly exist to fill a gap in geography and color. As an apology for missing yesterday, I'll post the next team immediately! Happy holidays, everyone!

Re: Nippon American Football League

Kyoto was Japan's capital for over 1000 years and is still home to lots of imperial relics and monuments. There was no other choice for Kyoto's team than Monarchs. They rock a purple and gold color scheme, representing royalty and crowns, respectively. Once again, the crown is taken from my IFC Kyoto project, as is the color scheme. What can I say, I did good work on that one!

The Monarchs are decked out in purple helmets and jerseys and are the only NAFL team to wear metallic gold pants. I considered going for a metallic gold helmet to match, but the logo didn't work nearly as well on gold or in any other color, so purple it is. They use a custom number font (also seen on Queen City State for all the AltCAA fans) and a two-stripe pattern that's filled in on white to add a little more color.

Kyoto ended up being one of my favorite teams. It's such a simple but beautiful set and they would be a team I'd love to root for in real life. I hope everyone had a good Christmas and is enjoying the holiday season. Tomorrow we head back to Tokyo Bay!

Re: Nippon American Football League

Okay, I fell behind on commenting so here's a big post to catch up!

Hokkaido Frost - I think the logo is solid and it's cool that it works across multiple sports. I like the striping, though I wish the hexagon element was more obvious in it. The sorta faux-Colts style striping is interesting, I think you could really lean into it. Not sure how it would look "live" currently. (Trying to imagine the template on a human) It might look more like the Rams new set with the plastic-looking sleeve caps, which I don't love but maybe it works here. I think the uniform is solid but the number set doesn't match for me. I'm craving a "frostier" number system. Overall I like the Frost, they feel like one of those teams that are probably weirdly successful despite lower fan support and bad ownership.

Nagano Steel - Well, clearly this is my team. Lol. I want to love this set so badly but sadly I think this identity is the one with the most issues. I like the logo a lot. It's bold and brash and I think it works for an industrial team with a Raiders-type attitude. Where I think this one goes wrong is in the color scheme and lack of any contrast. Everything is gray monochrome. Bosack got around this by pairing a slightly off black (I would recommend #191919 or my old favorite #171819) with slightly blue tinted grays (particularly the darker middle gray which he used #7f888d) to give more pop while still keeping the monochrome essence. A splash of color could be interesting, but I think you could really lean into the scheme with just better contrast. I actually like the stenciled font in this instance. I think the striping is cool too, but again, it needs to pop off the page, or uniform in this case, and it just blends into everything else. I think a metallic grey-blue with darker blacks would absolutely slay if that was the stripe. I don't think you should be afraid of white either, as the away uniform looks better just with more white for contrast. I'm probably biased because of the name but with that dope logo I really think this set could be amazing with some tweaks. Hopefully some of this helps.

Hanshin Wildcats - I have mixed feelings on this one. On one hand, I like the color scheme a lot. I think the logo is cool in a vacuum. It feels angled and has movement, which is where I think you missed an opportunity. I'm a sucker for a big bold block number but I think this team needs an angled version of a Bengals-esque style number face to match the movement of the logo. You don't show the other side, but I would imagine the logo would be flipped so it's always moving "forward". I think some tweaks would bring it from a Cal look-a-like to really solid identity. Even with the classic striping, a la Steelers, it would still work as a team with heritage and a modernized identity.

Okinawa Knights - This team feels like the Panthers and Bengals had a lovechild and I'm here for it! I really like the balance of gray with the orange and black, not easy to do. I can totally imagine American service members rocking Okinawa jerseys. This one is super solid. Nice work!

Chiba Pilots - I'm def getting PDX Grizzlies vibes, which of course I love. I like the logo. I do wonder if the helmet application should only have one wing facing toward the back, but overall it's a solid logo. I like the uniforms overall. The jersey numbers feel too standard catalog. Some kind of thinner slab style number face would better match the C in the logo imo. I think the addition of the striping in random places is weird but unique, kinda feels like chest ribbons on military uniforms. Maybe they could lean further into that with captain's patches, team leaders, or some kind of career experience ribbon with "years served." Just thinking outside of the box. It would take them from afterthought to super extra. Def would like to see a yellow facemask. Overall, solid team.

Kyoto Monarchs - This team is clearly one of the cream de la cream of the crop. Honestly no notes. I'd like to see what a helmet logo with no white outline would look like, maybe a faux-back set? but overall, just a super nice team that would be easy to root for.

Re: Nippon American Football League

If Chiba is a maritime city, then Yokohama might be Atlantis, because they live and breathe Tokyo Bay there. It's the first city a ship would see sailing in and is home to lots of ports and shipping districts. To that end, the team is named the Neptunes. Those of you who were in the SYCH will remember this as the logo of Pacific Hockey Club, which I'm once again appropriating. The logo, inspired by the USFL's Breakers, features a crashing wave with Neptune's trident splitting the peak. It's accompanied by a nautical double blue color scheme and font.

Yokohama's uniforms are also obviously inspired by the USFL's Breakers, specifically the 2022-23 edition. This time, however, I opted for a navy helmet shell and placed the trident from the logo atop the crown to act as a stripe. The wave from the helmet is also replicated on the jersey sleeves, staying medium blue to maintain consistency. The trident can be found once more on the pants stripe, acting as a third small stripe until it peaks near the hip.

Yokohama ended up as one of my favorite teams as well. The double blue scheme really works for me, especially once I decided to remove the orange trim color that Pacific HC had. Once again I'll post two teams today as an apology for missing yesterday. The holidays can get busy with family!

Re: Nippon American Football League

Hiroshima is a modern and dynamic city, completely rebuilt from the disaster that struck in 1945. I wanted to capture a unique Japanese design trend of using simple letterforms to depict names, and so I used an H folded over itself to represent three arrows, which come from a famous parable about feudal lord Mori Motonari: he told his three sons to each break an arrow, which they did easily. Then, he tied three arrows together and asked his sons to break them, and they could not, showing how they were unbreakable if they worked together. This same parable is the basis for the name of Hiroshima's J.League team, Sanfrecce Hiroshima. A modern twist on red and blue was chosen as the color scheme, inspired by St. Louis CITY Soccer Capital.

The Arrows' uniforms are sharp and modern, just like the logo. The main draw is the logo itself, as the arrows never end and instead meet in the back on the helmet and end with the sleeve. Thin stripes are the other decoration, found on the collar, cuffs, and pants. I'm not sure how often navy pants would actually be worn, but I wanted it to be an option for the team. The number font is a custom one I originally made for the Carolina Reapers of the AltFL.

Hiroshima is one of my favorite cities I've ever had the chance of visiting. It really is beautiful, especially Peace Memorial Park. If you ever get the chance, I highly recommend going. Anyway, the Arrows are a bit of an experiment, me trying to tap into more modern, UFL-style design without going overboard. There are only two teams left! Tomorrow will be Tokyo's second team.

Thanks so much for the feedback! This combined with notes Htown has been giving me on Discord have given me plenty of ideas on how to improve these teams. I'm especially excited to take a second crack at the Steel and Pilots.

Re: Nippon American Football League

It's cool to see your Pacific HC logo in a different application, I actually think it works even better for football. The simplified color scheme is nice as well. The trident on the helmet is a bit much, I like it much better as the pant stripe but overall I think it's a solid team.

I really like Hiroshima. The background story is cool to see incorporated. Part of me wants to see the middle parts between the arrows filled in white on the helmet but I also like the way it's more subtle on the helmet. Either way, I like them. They remind me of the Texans a bit, newer team and all. I think you captured that modern city essence really well. They feel like a team that would be really good at social media. Good stuff.

Re: Nippon American Football League

So mostly, no notes. I think you're doing quite well with these. I wish the Steel had more contrast, right now it leaves something that has a really good premise kinda "meh". I have no problems with black/gray, but it feels like it's missing something.

The other one is the Pilots. You have a gorgeous logo for it, and it feels like the logo was built with stripes that should be used... and then it doesn't use them on the sleeves in favor of the logo.
