Torland: Formula Twelve (F12)

FORMULA TWELVE

Welcome to the Torland: Racing Edition!

By the early 70's auto racing was becoming popular in Torland, particularly in Maienzona where several hubs of racing groups had begun to grow. A retired Maienzona racing icon known as “Papa Worthy” began to gather racing groups and automotive manufacturers to form the Torland Auto Racing Association (TARA) and discuss founding a league similar to Formula One which had grown exponentially in Europe. Weston “Papa” Worthy Sr., proposed a season of twelve race teams across twelve tracks through state-hosted grands prix to determine champions in driving and constructing.

By 1971, several racing development teams of Torland's top automotive companies had gotten on board, including Alpite and Parion, two of the largest in the country. With the number twelve everywhere, the league was jokingly dubbed “Formula Twelve” which stuck despite Papa Worthy's reservations. The league was building momentum as the San Ferrio-based company Goodwin Tires threw their hat in the ring. Soon after Bisson Tires and Yaeger Tires also cast their allegiance and began recruiting teams to use their tires. Prominent businessman Grover Calhoun decided to invest in the league and he was named president of Formula Twelve. Another retired race car driver with investment experience named Steve Dent was added as vice president. With Calhoun and Dent handling business and getting it operational, Papa Worthy was able to focus on racing.

Calhoun and Dent scoured Torland's available circuits for suitable locations for Formula-style racing and narrowed down a dozen strong candidates for a first season, including several iconic venues, along with another dozen being readied by cities and states to make bids for Grands Prix. Each of the 11 states would host a Grand Prix along with a twelfth and final Grand Prix, called the Worthy Cup Grand Prix, which would be on an at-bid rotation and include the seasonal awards ceremonies. The Drivers' Champion would be called the Worthy Cup and the Constructors' Champion would be called the Calhoun Cup.

Each race would be 48 laps except for the final race which would be 72 laps. The season would begin the first weekend after Revolution Day (March 3rd) and end the first weekend of September with a typical schedule of a race every other week, with two extended breaks after the fifth and tenth races. Races would be held over a weekend, typically Friday thru Sunday, except in cases of inclement weather. Practices and qualifiers would be held on Friday and Saturday and the race on Sunday. Each team would have two cars and drivers. The top eight finishers would receive points, with the podium finishers receiving the most points in a 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 format. Each team would be required to build their own custom chassis but were free to use any engine and tires manufactured in directly in Torland.

===== NOTES =====

This will be a casual series with less emphasis on graphics and detailed logos, even though I've created a template. I was inspired by an early screening of Gran Turismo (wonderful movie) to create circuits and races in Torland to help with even more world building and I've been enjoying the change of pace from hockey. I am by no means a racing expert so I would appreciate any insight or suggestions! Hope y'all enjoy this series as it develops.

Re: Torland: Formula Twelve (F12)

After Calhoun and Dent had personally toured every available suitable race track in Torland over the course of several months, they selected 12 grands prix bids to create the first season schedule. Their goal was to create a challenging and diverse series of races that honored historic Torland racing traditions while also highlighting new tracks and race cultures. With the 12 bids selected, each Grand Prix set about modifying their tracks to suit TARA's grade standards and updating the fan experience in anticipation of greater crowds and events.

With a grand prix bid accepted from each state, a special grand prix was created called the Worthy Cup Grand Prix as the final race of the season that would also include the season awards ceremonies. The hallowed grounds of Montauveil was chosen for this race, a special circuit with lots of iconic history.

Calendar highlights include the series opener in San Jotapa at the Old Sanjo Circuit, often called the “Queen” of Torland racing. The longest circuit in Torland known as the “Iron Daddy” at Zent Auto Racing Circuit in San Ferrio will be a huge event for the fifth round. The Midnight Mile in Kirkenport is the shortest and considered the most difficult track in the country, leading Calhoun and Dent to add an extra week off between rounds 10 and 11, as most teams have to make repairs after Kirkenport. With the start of the season looming, the F12 team will publish more detailed information about each race as it comes.

With excitement building, F12 turned to introducing the teams and drivers who would be competing for glory.

Re: Torland: Formula Twelve (F12)

We begin by revealing three of the twelve inaugural teams competing in F12. In these early days of the league, liveries will be very plain and minimal and will become more detailed and iconic as the league grows. Hopefully enough sense of each team will be displayed for everyone to choose which team and drivers they will support. Please let me know if you'd like to hear more detail or have questions about anything. Also in these early days, there will be an abundance of engine manufacturers and other companies so it will be interesting to see which ones rise to the top. With that being said, we reveal the first three teams.

Papa Worthy branded his team Worthy Motorsports, based in San Ferrio, which he founded with his brother “Uncle” Wendall Worthy. Papa's son Wes Junior, just 18 years old but already a young star, would be the primary driver. With Uncle Wendall as crew chief and mechanic at the Worthy garage, the team prepared the first official Formula-style car in Torland with a Worthy chassis and a locally made Parion engine paired with Goodwin tires, a company based in Prestonburg. Junior's friend Landon “Lando” Nickerson, 19, was recruited to be the second car driver. Despite the young ages of the drivers, the Worthy brothers feel their experience will pay off in fielding a competitive squad. Papa's huge personality should be enough to keep Worthy relevant even if their young drivers struggle. But Papa was overhead boasting to race reporter Parker Bone that his “boy was gonna kick F12's ass.”

The rivalry of Alpite Motors and Parion Motors came into play as both development teams quickly formed Grand Prix race teams. Alpite, based in Waterdee, one of the top automotive manufacturers in Torland, formed a team under co-owner Modesto Lantz, whose long interest in racing had helped develop several super engines. Lantz recuited Jude “Da Villian” daVilla and Bobby “BoRo” Romero to drive for the team, now called Alpite Racing Team and sponsored by Bisson Tires. DaVilla, 23, was a local from Hilversale and Romero, 21, was from San Ferrio, having grown up in the racing culture. Both are considered aggressive drivers, immediately giving Alpite a tough reputation, especially with Modesto's outspoken son Jack acting as crew chief.

Meanwhile, Parion Motors head of development Silas Jorgensen formed a team called Parion Motors Racing Team at their factory in San Ferrio with a second garage in Meresso and secured a contract with rising star Nathan Najera as lead driver and the experienced Byron “BG” Giroux as second driver. Najera, 19, had already made noise at local circuits in Meresso and seemed primed for a leap into formula cars. Najera is already a slick technical driver. Giroux, 27, was from Narva and had helped build the race culture in Forstana, particularly around Bisson Tires in Bethea. Parion's focus on endurance will be well served with Najera and Giroux under crew chief Kristofer “Santa” Clough, one of the premiere mechanics and engineers in Torland.

Thanks! It has turned into a bit of a tire war, even without intending it, but it shows all these new companies are fighting for dominance and F12 seems like a perfect way to gain traction in the decade.

We have three primary tire companies: Bisson (bee-son) is based in Bethea, Forstana, just outside of Narva, and has a loyal following in Torland on a well-known brand. Yaeger is based in Kirlow and the oldest of the three companies, with a bit of a smaller reach but a very loyal brand and successful company. Goodwin is based in Prestonburg and is the newest but has been growing very quickly, especially in the southeast.

Next up we have a trio of racing teams to introduce, all sponsored by Yaeger.

Kirlow-based automobile manufacturer Klibekraft decided to sponsor a team and provide their chassis and engine to lead developer Kip Schmitt and a local tire sponsorship with Yaeger Tires. The brands of Klibekraft and Yaeger are synonymous with each other, having been founded by two friends in Conrad Klibe and Hans Yaeger in Kirlow. Klibe-Schmitt Racing would continue to focus on development of high capacity engines while building an F12 race team. Schmitt brought in local legend Richie Schifflett to be lead driver, who even at 30 is still a very capable racer. Rising driver Ty Rodgers, 24, was brought in from Sina to be secondary. Chris Klibe, grandson of Conrad, would be chief mechanic at the Klibe works facility.

With Yaeger on the prowl for more sponsorships, they reeled in Kurohara-based brothers Rodrick and Cedrick Yanez. The Yanez garage features both brothers as primary drivers with Rod, 27, covering more business and Ced, 24 usually in lead driver position. Their main mechanic is their cousin Robbie Otero who keeps things running. The Yanez tribe is fun-loving with a great joy for all things racing, including airplanes and helicopters. They have a partnership with local company Dalwen Motors, which is primarily focused on aero but have recently delved into sports cars and potential luxury brand consumer vehicles.

Looking to score a trifecta, aging racing icon Jasper Graig was recruited by Yaeger and talked into forming a race team out of his Silkeboro, Pakola-based garage. Many think Graig is way past his prime and not in tune with modern racing but he's well-known and still popular with the money crowd. Graig chose a Murray engine from his own sponsored company in Silkeboro. Murray's sports engines are still not fully tested so it could be a big risk for Graig to go with it for a full season but he was not to be deterred. He nabbed a pair of experienced drivers in Danny Cathey and Clint Curtiss to head up the drive team. He chose Murray mechanic Mac MacIntosh to helm the garage.

The first six are revealed and now we head to the final six of inaugural race teams.

Re: Torland: Formula Twelve (F12)

Worthy looks very nice, very classic, and that's it's beauty, I like the Alpite logo, very modern and memorable, Parion is the best one so far, nice wordmark choice, and the best logo.

The Klibe livery looks good, I like the triple Klibe, it looks like it's from the 1970's, like those tv idents and graphics, Yanez looks nice, very nice logo, Jasper Graig is simple, classic, but pretty modern.
